Virtual Rural SummitWelcome to Senator Barack Obama's Virtual Rural Summit. As President, Barack Obama will implement a comprehensive rural agenda that protects traditional family farmers. Some of that agenda was developed during his years as a farm-state U.S. Senator. But he is seeking input from real people to fully develop his vision for rural America. On Friday, Aug. 17, Senator Obama will convene a panel of rural issues experts in Tama, IA, to solicit policy input on a variety of issues. He is also convening this virtual summit from August 15-17 to get input from as many people as possible. The summit will focus on three key areas: · Rural Economic Development and Quality of Life· Energy · Agriculture Through the years, Senator Obama has worked to strengthen farm programs by supporting increased funding for them, and he has supported full funding for agricultural programs that were authorized by Congress in the 2002 Farm Bill. He supports Senator Harkin’s efforts to restore funding for conservation, and to ensure adequate funding for investments in ethanol, renewable fuels and biofuels such as biodiesel. The recommendations and policy ideas you submit online will be presented to Senator Obama and his policy team, and will be a part of the discussion on Friday in Tama.
