To Him Who Overcomes...

Many people in the Civil Rights Era, sang a theme song, an anthem if you will, of "We Shall Overcome" and that old Baptist Hymn, inspired and galvanized the movement.

When President Obama & Vice President Biden were elected in November, 2008; to the surprise of some and the regret of others; it was a manifest destiny of equal rights prayers having been answered.

Yet we all know that the Presidency is not the man or woman that occupies it, but it is the living tradition of American Government, in continuity, and if God will it, in perpetuity.

I asked a question of those "Big Think" experts and contributers: "Where is the place in the whole world that has the best quality of life for Black people?" Not one reply. The silence spoke volumes, of world wide oppression, and economic suppression of a people. The truth is that we are already here. In most countries even the right to ask the question could mean a death sentence. ...But we have elected a diverse Government of representation of every group ever factionalized in our culture.

What looms on the horizon may very well be; the sunrise of the only ethnicity that we think of no matter what color or costume, or religion is presenting is "I am an American."

When our point of origin is less important than our current state of being; then we truly have "Overcome." Then every division, and every prejudice has melted away like so much ice in a springtime sun. The winter of our disconnection is soon to be over...and our connection has begun. The content of our character, and the quality of our interactions will be what truly matters.

We will still be myriad colors, and have a kaleidoscope of experiences, but sharing the same light of unity, within our right to diversity. I don't want a homogenized world; do you?

Instead as the French say: "Viva le difference..." and it really is okay to be different and still be respected, and respectful of the difference of others. We are all in this country together, and hurt to one, ultimately hurts all, because injustice tends to have a cumulative negative effect.

In spite of my discriminatory employment experience I love this country. I attended the University of Florida for three years and I graduated from SUNY at Brockport in 1989. I majored in Political Science and minored in Criminal Justice. My only son served this country as a military police officer in the United States Marine Corp. He is currently a police officer a position that he has held for fourteen years.

I am SO thankful that President Carter addressed the fact that “some” people are opposing President Obama’s policy because of the color of his skin. Hopefully, President Carter’s remarks will put those in elected positions on notice that we are watching and listening to them. I am also hoping that it will give other Americans courage to take a stand against racism in any form that it may present itself to them.

It is not necessary for President Obama to address this issue because his supporters will address it for him. Our President is responsible for making this a more perfect nation for all of us and he has more than enough on his plate at this time.

I believe that President Obama has exhibited a spirit of cooperation with all the members in Congress regardless of political party. The economy is getting better, that the cash for clunkers program was successful, that the stock market is recovering it loses, and that the unemployment numbers are down. In spite of this clear evidence that President Obama has made wise decisions for this nation the Republicans have criticized and opposed him.

One minute he is a racist and hates White people next they think he is like Hitler, the man who killed millions so as to purify the White race. I think that these cries against President Barack Obama are larger than the people themselves.

We need to look inwardly when we find ourselves amused by such evils around us and wonder if these actions aren’t people being slaves to evil, if we aren’t acting through Satan’s will and at his beck and call.

We as a nation, at this moment in time, face severe circumstances. Systems vital to the stability and continous growth of the nation, such as education, health care, social and political policies are rapidly deteriorating. This deterioration stems not from the lack of human capital, no this decaying process has been generated by collective members of our U.S. Congress, who are determined to place negative, illogical road blocks in the way of progress.

One must question the motives of individuals who without good, sound reason, have vowed to oppose progress that with hard work and commitment can ensure an inclusive healthy, educated nation as a whole. More importantly it has the potential to ensure a nation of healthy, educated human beings.

Reason based on logic reveals, at this time the nation needs healthy citizens. Given that millions of individuals are currently unemployed, new ideas must be explored, training for new occupations must be developed, implementation of new work standards and policies must be constructed to meet the new 21st century way of work. How can this be accomplished if the majority of our nations citizens are in bad health? This nation is not self maintained, it can not repair nor rebuild itself, it was build by hardworking members of society, by the way of forced labor without pay. So is it logical to believe that, the most powerful nation in the world has the power to rebuilt itself.

Reason based on logic reveals, not only must citizens be healthy, but they must also be well educated. How can a nation hold pride in having the finest educational institutions in the world, but refuse to have highly education individuals that understand their purpose for teaching, is to prepare all children, to become future productive citizens of the nation. These are just some of the issues that are of vital importance to the U.S. This nation must faced racial ideologies, "just for us" social and policial policies, the negative effects of it's ethnic imaging, the list continues. But for now let's focus on the most pressing issues of health care and education, maybe by correcting these social inaccuracy the remainding social barriers won't be as difficult to face and destroy.

Obama called the actions of the DPRK, thoughtless act, to which the world must answer

U.S. President Barack Obama has already made a second for the night a statement on the DPRK nuclear test. If the first was relatively mild, the latter is much more rigid rhetoric.

"Program of the DPRK to develop ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear charge, represent a great threat to international peace and security, and I strongly condemn this act of unthinking," - said Obama.

He said North Korea's actions not only threaten the population of the North-East Asia, but also a flagrant violation of international law, as well as contrary to commitments made by the DPRK. In the Philippines ferry sinking: 12 dead, including three children

Re: Bias and Prejudice Investigation by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Mr. President:

Please excuse me from taking your valuable time away from governing our country, but I must submit this writing seeking advocacy for shared beliefs in an honorable employment system free from discrimination and indifferent treatment along with responsible government intervention when an employment entity compromises the laws governing employment practices. At this time in your Presidency, it appears your priorities are focused on the economy and employment. This writing addresses both priorities. You signed a bill today, January 29, 2009, requiring women to get equal pay in employment, which also expands the time for filing discrimination claims. The lady to whom the bill reflects battled the powers to be for equal rights and pay for everyone. My fight is similar. I have been battling with the powers to be for equal employment under the law.

Background/History with the Illinois Department of Corrections:

First, I have been subjected to discrimination, marginalized and retaliated against because of my non-violent criminal drug convictions in 1988 and 1992. Sir, when I was sentenced in 1992 I did not have a G.E.D. I received my G.E.D. in Chicago’s county jail while waiting to go to the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). I started going to college in prison. Once released in December of 1994, I achieved my Bachelor degree in General Studies with a focus on Social Science (1997) and a Master degree in Mental Health with a focus on Community Counseling (1999) from Roosevelt University in Chicago. I started my PhD program with Walden University in 1999. I will receive my PhD in Human Services with a focus on Social Policy Analysis and Planning in February of 2009.

While I was incarcerated in IDOC in 1992, I suffered racial discrimination, indifferent treatment and retaliation attempting to access the courts. I was still litigating my criminal convictions while incarcerated. When going to court from an IDOC prison in Vandalia, my legal papers were purposely taken and destroyed by IDOC personnel. The legal papers contained information against Judge Paul Foxgrover who convicted me and my personal lawyer William Swano. Paul Foxgrover was convicted of a felony 18 months after convicting me receiving a 6-year sentence, and Attorney Swano was convicted in Operation Greylord and disbarred.

I filed a civil action against IDOC for denying access to court, with the caption Fred Nance Jr. v. J.D. Vieregge, et al. The District Court denied my claims. The U.S. District Court of Appeals overruled the District Court on appeal stating “Nance has two options, which are not mutually exclusive: to seek damages in state court for the value of the photocopies as ordinary personal property; and to initiate a collateral attack or request for pardon concerning the judgment that rests on his guilty plea.” As stated above, this Appellate Court overturned the lower court’s decision dismissing my original complaint stating I had not pleaded facts showing that Vieregge acted deliberately. I did not know about this Appellate court decision until 2005. I was litigating another matter regarding “access to court” in the Federal court when through my research I found my case. I filed for clemency with Governor Blagojevich in October of 2006. Governor Blagojevich never responded to my petition for clemency.

After I filed my civil complaint against IDOC and J.D. Vieregge, IDOC transferred me from a minimum security prison to a medium security prison. I was put in segregation because I complained about my missing legal papers. I was put in segregation 2 more times bogusly for administrative reasons. I was transferred 2 more times to various Southern Illinois institutions with IDOC knowing I would not get visitation because my relatives lived in the Chicago area. My wife of 16 years was murdered on July 5, 1993 while I was incarcerated. My daughter, who was 9-years-old at the time, found my wife’s body lying in the alley behind the house where they were living. IDOC refused to let me attend my wife’s funeral and visit with my children at the funeral home.

Present matter with IDOC and EEOC:

Second, I filed 2 charges, one on April 16, 2007 and one on May 12, 2008, for employment discrimination based on race, sex, age and retaliation against the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) and WestCare Foundation, Inc. (WestCare) with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which has been severely hindered and nefariously interrupted with biases and prejudices by staff of the Chicago District office of EEOC.

Facts: I applied for a counseling employment position with Gateway Foundation, Inc. (Gateway) on or about April 2005. Gateway had the State of Illinois counseling contract with IDOC at Sheridan Correctional Center (Sheridan). IDOC refused my employment and security clearance. I appealed IDOC’s decision. One of the issues for my denial of employment with IDOC was that I visited my brother while he was in prison. I was not a convicted felon when I visited my brother. In April of 2006 I was granted a security clearance to work at Sheridan.

I reported for work on May 1, 2006. On June 6, 2006 AFSCME the union had a strike at Sheridan. I tried to come to work and cross the picket line. Sheridan’s Warden Michael Rothwell denied me access to work. Warden Rothwell and a person who identified himself as an Assistant Director in Springfield informed me I could not cross the picket lines and go to work. They would not tell me why I could not cross the picket lines.

I filed for unemployment compensation. I was denied because IDOC said I was off from work because of misconduct. Upon successful appeal with the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) I received my benefits. I was identified as “non-participatory” with IDES in this matter. IDES reported in its summary “…The unemployment of the “non-participatory” claimant-appellants is not due to a work stoppage caused by the labor dispute…there was one efficient cause of the claimants’ unemployment and it was not the labor dispute. It was the unilateral actions of IDOC…The actions of IDOC were a separate and the only cause of the claimant’s unemployment.” After this decision and my return to employment on September 6, 2006 I was retaliated against by IDOC personnel and the administration at Sheridan.

I suffered race, sex, and age discrimination in my job duties, promotions and job placement at Sheridan with IDOC personnel and WestCare employees. I was denied supervisory promotions several times while white and black females, younger than me, were placed in the supervisory position with less experience than I. I was discriminated against when IDOC and its staff denied me access to work while allowing white males and females, younger than me, to cross the picket lines. Yet, EEOC says I have no case. EEOC has all the documents I am sending you.

Ms. Janel Smith is the investigator on my cases with EEOC. I have complained continuously to her supervisor since filing my charges about her biases and prejudices toward me and my endeavors for EEOC to litigate my charges against IDOC and WestCare. Finally, I wrote President Bush whose office forwarded my complaint to Chicago’s District office Director, Mr. John P. Rowe, where my EEOC charge is filed. I thought Mr. Rowe would monitor the process.

These events are documented in detail on my blogs. The letter to President Bush is posted on your website. I will be posting this letter on your website. My intention by posting this issue is to demonstrate the inadequacy of EEOC and the discriminatory practices of IDOC and WestCare. Also, I believe there is an unethical and unnatural partnership between EEOC and IDOC, along with WestCare. Let us not forget about Governor Blagojevich and Illinois politics. This is real.

Sir, it is rare we find someone of your integrity and honesty. Even though you practiced law in Chicago, you did not taint your character and behavior. For that, I applaud you. Since the EEOC is a Federal entity, I plead with you for your intervention. Ms. Janel Smith informed me on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 and on Thursday, January 29, 2009, that my charges with EEOC were being terminated. On Tuesday I asked Ms. Smith did IDOC tell her why they took my security clearance. Ms. Smith told me that IDOC did not want me working at Sheridan. On Thursday Ms. Smith told me that IDOC and WestCare told her I was locked out for poor performance and misconduct. I wrote a letter to Director Roger Walker on July 30, 2008 requesting a reason for being lockout of Sheridan and my employment. Mr. Walker never answered my certified letter to him. I asked Ms. Smith did IDOC and WestCare provide written documentation for this charge against me. Ms. Smith said they sent her the same documents I gave her. What does this mean? I told Ms. Smith that WestCare sent me a letter telling me that I was terminated because IDOC locked me out. I informed Ms. Smith that I worked for WestCare and not for IDOC. Therefore, how could IDOC say that I was locked out for poor performance and misconduct?

It seems strange as I told Ms. Smith that she would call me now after I e-mailed her last week requesting status on my charges. It appears on its face that she decided as she has tried to do all of last year to dismiss my charges. Ms. Smith once told me that EEOC does not have the manpower or resources to properly address the discriminatory charges I bring before it.

Where I do I fit in this scenario? I guess I get sacrificed. I guess IDOC’s discriminatory actions continue. Sheridan’s substance abuse program is supposed to reduce recidivism. How can it promote such a charge if it is not willing to work with those who have rehabilitated themselves? It may be due to my personal rehabilitation because IDOC had nothing to do with mine. It's a frustrating circumstance when you are fired for following the rules, Barack. Some of us actually are brave enough to report harassment and discrimination when we experience it, and anyone who has been harassed knows that the experience is no laughing matter. When we are fired for following correct procedures to report violations of our EEO rights and then not only penalized for it by our employer, but then left out in the cold by the very government we are all busy filling out paperwork for to figure what we owe you or what we get back as a refund. There are apparently too many reports to handle in the COLD COLD state of Utah...and believe me, we have some cold and disrespectful people in our gloriously snowy state.

I give you another recent example of someone...a mentor, just trying to go to work every day and make her dollar. She wasn't trying to get rich the way her offender was talking about it.

Let's Not Get Over-dramatic on January 19-20

Hey, everybody. While it's pretty cool that Barack Obama is half black, why don't we not make it about race. And let's make sure that we make this new president get down to business, right away! I want to see some real responsible governing. I want to see real progress. I want to see deficit reduction. I don't care if we have to raise taxes. Tough Sh!t. We can't leave the next generations ANY debt! Would you leave your children hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt that they would be OBLIGATED to pay back? I wouldn't! It may mean that even working class people have to sacrifice a bit.

We are all in this together. EVERYBODY! I know what I am going to do. I am going to try to help build a consensus on issues and send that info right to the white house and Congress. I am going to continually write my congresswoman and senators and ensure they know what I expect. I am going to think about the next generation, about the world as one, and I am going to fight for what's right.

I challenge anyone to come on board to a political debate site like www.u4prez.com and discuss issues and develop consensus. That's got to be OUR job, not Obama's. We have to pull together, and I mean really together .... for the future.

This reading I’m going to share are the words of Frances Ellen Watkins Harper— Unitarian, abolitionist, feminist, poet, author—just an amazing African American women in the 1800s. This reading is from her speech titled, “We Are All Bound up Together,” given before the Eleventh National Women’s Rights Convention held in New York in 1866.

“We are all bound up together in one great bundle of humanity, and society cannot trample on the weakest and feeblest of its members without receiving the curse in its own soul. You tried that in the case of the Negro. You pressed him down for two centuries; and in so doing you crippled the moral strength and paralyzed the spiritual energies of the white men of the country. When the hands of the black were fettered, white men were deprived of the liberty of speech and the freedom of the press. Society cannot afford to neglect the enlightenment of any class of its members. Earlier this month President-Elect Obama had his first press conference. And yes discussion did come up on that nagging problem- the dog situation - and Obama called himself a "Mutt" ;)

Sidebar: now how many of us have had to discuss having a dog with our family? Besides the fun and joy ---there is all that the kids fail to acknowledge- the potty training and cleaning up the yard--who is going to feed it. I feel for the Obama's!

“Goodbye Reagan Democrats” is the title of a rather vitriolic column by pollster Stanley Greenberg in the Nov. 11th New York Times. Brian Dickerson has a good column in the Nov. 12th Free Press, responding to it. Here are some excerpts from Greenberg‘s column.

I’m finished with the Reagan Democrats of Macomb County in suburban Detroit after making a career of spotlighting their middle-class anger and frustrations about race and Democratic politicians. …

For more than 20 years, the non-college-educated white voters in Macomb County have been considered a “national political barometer.” … After Ronald Reagan won the county by a 2-to-1 margin in 1984, … I conducted focus groups that “found that these working-class whites interpreted Democratic calls for economic fairness as code for transfer payments to African-Americans.” So what do we think when Barack Obama, an African-American Democrat, wins Macomb County by eight points? …

Before the Democratic convention, barely 40 percent of Macomb County voters were “comfortable” with the idea of Mr. Obama as president, far below the number who were comfortable with a nameless Democrat. But on Election Day, nearly 60 percent said they were “comfortable” with Mr. Obama. About the same number said Mr. Obama “shares your values” and “has what it takes to be president.”

Most of us who are bi-racial, tri-racial and heaven knows what else are grateful to be seen as individuals on the basis of character.

The victory of Sen. Obama as our new President-Elect has set a new milestone in that direction.

As a Christian from a spiritual perspective, I think that the Bible gives us wise counsel about "digging pits for others that we may eventually fall into ourselves." The definition of who is "white" is so narrowly defined in this country that the White people who came up with this stuff have unwittingly defined themselves into the minority of the future and it was a pit they dug for themselves. Their own children with slaves were categorically treated as slaves and segregated for economic gain and not allowed to learn or live with their own parent in a loving manner except for very few. After all miscegenation was against the law but it went on anyway although on an illegimate basis. In order to be considered "white" you had to be eighth generation white washed or 1/16 "black". Now what if that definition had been just the opposite. We would not have a race problem in this country. We all would be "white" just like Arabs are white, Hispanics are now white.. by the capricious definition of a government. Well what does the Creator think? Probably that we have a lot of grandiose, vain imaginations about our own superiority and inferiority.

If we all had a DNA test to truly see what percentage of each race on the planet we have inherited from it would truly be amazing. A lot of people who appear "white" might not be even 50% white, and a lot of people who appear "black" might might actually be 60-70% white. So other than one gene of skin color determining the future potentiality of a human's contribution to mankind and neglecting to appreciate their genius and character, we as Americans have truly shortchanged ourselves of so much progress and advancement because of this retarded attitude of racism. And now we outsource jobs to people of other nations with less DNA in common than each of us, who never lived in this nation and never fought a war side by side with us regardless of race, who never lived here period and yet we expect them to have our best interests at heart because they sell us oil and keep our Dollar stores full of goods.

Universal health care and many other so-called "socialistic" programs are much easier to adopt in nations where racism is very minimal because you are caring for your extended family.. your nation. You respect that when they get sick that's your problem, that the fence is as strong as the weakest link and your nation's identity is measured by the weakest individuals in terms of its overall status economically, culturally and ultimately spiritually. If we have a nation where only 2% live well and the other 98% are just struggling to get by with a middle class that is shrinking than what does that say about America? I believe Sen. Obama sees the big picture and gets it. I believe he will do a lot to restore America's standing-- not as a shallow veneer of prosperity showcased by a few--, but a real prosperity that strengthens all Americans and is solid and more lasting. If you don't have a stake in this nation, why would you sacrifice your life for it? Is it any surprise that African-American participation in the Armed Forces has dropped from 25% to less than 10% in spite of the difficult economic times.

If college students at campuses as prestigious as Purdue University want to write racist graffiti on November 5, 2008, about President-Elect Obama and about niggers and lynching, well why would any person of color want to put their life on the line for these type of people except for the love of God that you love your enemies. What FOX news and others neglect to report about Rev. Wright is that although he exposes the hypocrisies, the immoral behavior of government which Rev. Graham and others have done as well, he also encourages his flock to love, forgive, pray, repent and reconcile and not return evil with evil, but to return evil with good, to develop the fruits of the spirit in one's character in having to be subjected to the persecuting ways of the world. If we weren't filtering his sermons through race-baited fear, we might be able to hear what the "Spirit of the Lord" is saying to exhort us to become better people. All the prophetic teachers in the Bible never sugar coated anything and they got stoned, drowned, locked in dungeons, heads cut off because they spoke the "truth". God sees everything. Nathan spoke to David about his adultery.. he didn't get the insight from the 6:00 pm news. We nowadays rely more on the media and our circle of friends to inform us, however, some of us dig a little deeper and through prayer see clearer. God does not need the CIA, NSA, FBI to show us reality or to inform us. People do and can manipulate and cherry pick the data they receive from these entities and turn it into what they want... misinformation, disinformation, manipulation... short of lying. What God sees and what we know is vastly different... God's ways are not our ways and therefore God's sermons through His servants may offend us, but that is par for the course. What use is "salt" if it has lost its saltiness and no longer disinfects and preserves the meat? That goes for Pastor Hagee, Pastor Tarpley who McCain eventually distanced himself from and the many others who faithfully teach every Sunday ... and for that matter the Pope as well who admonished us against the War in Iraq and all people of faith and non-faith who seek honesty, integrity, fairness and justice for all.

Thank goodness something bigger than us is pushing us to evolve past this. That something bigger lives inside each of us regardless of race, religion and socio-economic status and other superficial differences. This election victory is a victory for those higher angels guiding us all.

The (Non-)Issue of Color in the USA

I am white. My mother's great grandfather (surname Cunningham) was Irish/Scottish.

I am black. I have Americans of African descent on both sides of my family who suffered under slavery.

I am Native-American. My great-great grandfather on my mother's side married a Native-American. My great-great grandmother on my father's side was also Native-American.

These are my known heritages. If I were able to go back through my family tree far enough, I have no doubt that there would be some surprises waiting for me.

Like most of you, I have experienced the insanity and seduction of prejudice and bigotry. In the Bible God Himself is quoted as saying "Man[kind] looks at the outward appearance" (1st Samuel 16:7). As a student of history I have read of the challenges and biases faced by all three of my bloodlines down through the halls of time.

That is why, as I was driving to work 05-Nov-2008, after Barack Obama won the Presidential election of the United States, I found myself crying. After 400 years of waging war against the psychological stigma of being seen as second-class citizens, our perseverance as blacks has been vindicated.

As whites we have finally stood up, and in one single event we have reached out our hands to our African-American citizens and said "You have a right to be here."

And, though perhaps indirectly, we as Native-Americans have finally found the strength to once again begin to participate in and sew the seeds of ancient truth and wisdom in a society that had almost lost its way.

It goes without saying that the struggle for equality is not yet over; but a major victory for peace and justice between our peoples has been won, and will be long-remembered by us and our descendants.

WHO IS THAT GUY BARACK OBAMA? HE IS US.

We have made historic headway by together pointing our nation in the right directions. After decades, we have America focused on the issues of fundamental importance. Now, each of us acting in concert can together move our country to lead the world to the fruitfulness of moral goodness. I have no doubts about my abilities and the abilities of fellow Americans to work smart and hard to achieve these goals.

Barack Obama has the visions, leadership, and integrity for us to correct and redirect our country to once again lead the world for the fruitions of good. Let's closely listen, learn, and move forward based on that which we know deep inside is good and which we can validate with our hearts.

I hope that those who had but a few reasons to support Obama, look further into the other issues more deeply. I found the more I explored, studied, and listened to Obama the more I found us in agreement. The couple of issues that I did not have depth of knowledge of, quickly became obvious in need. This was unusual for me since I have always refused to be any kind of a follower, and still am not. I find Obama to be a deep thinker who is articulate and inspirational; and, of most fundamental importance, Obama makes excellent moral sense.

Hopefully, our country has learned lessons from the past of mistakenly following leadership blindly, as was done with Nixon and Bush. There are leaders who are simply in it for themselves and will cater to individuals or groups in order to grab for their own benefit. Corrupt and bad leaders hide at all levels. This is especially true in city government as well as county and state government. The corrupt deals of politicians need to be exposed, and those responsible need to be weeded out in the coming local elections. Others need to be investigated by law enforcement and be prosecuted for illegal dealings; for deals they often make for their hidden personal agendas. Let’s look at the bad experiences of the past as bitter medicines, let’s eliminate the need for such bad medicine in the future. Let us use what we know is good to go forward.

I believe we have chosen wisely, not by greed and not by misguided retaliatory anger. I believe this time our country has chosen with open eyes, with each of us listening and examining our choice of leadership closely, driven and validated by our hearts.

I hope we can continue to make our efforts even more inclusive (in many more ways than I touch on here). Far right republicans will be stubborn to change, but we will need to include them to change if we are to succeed. Sure a few more will leave our country, but that is not the American way. No, we really don't need their false fronts of power, money, insider knowledge, or other trappings that they have taught many to 'respect?'. Let's recruit as many as we can, that's the American way, evolving and changing together as one nation. Try to be understanding as we move forward; by better understanding each as individuals and people with various desires and needs we will find ways to reach out with friendship and have them join our causes of good.

Be on the lookout, and root out bad leadership in government and business. Do not be intimidated by those who use the false fronts of power and give a false sense of security in order to lead. Be extra leery of those who say or imply ‘Trust me’; those who give a sense that they somehow omnipotently know better. No longer will Americans be dazzled by phony displays of brilliance or baffled by baloney. There are government aristocrats and business leaders who still believe in the old adage of: “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle em with bullshit”. We can embrace complexity by demanding true, fundamental, and understandable explanations. We can root out falsehoods by not accepting double speak. We as Americans know how to grow ourselves by first believing in ourselves. Don’t be a follower. Don’t be a follower of followers.

However, when we find leaders who are good; a leader that thinks, speaks, and acts from their heart; one that is honest, has integrity, and leads by sincere examples; then we need to in a big way, join them, support them, and promote their causes of good. From much research, investigation, and scrutiny, I believe Barack Obama is such a person. I hope we search for and find many more who are similar, who we can add to service at all levels of government. We need to add/replace leaders in business with ones that have honesty, integrity, and show quality in leadership. We need more people in leadership roles who are moral, like Barack Obama.

Remember, we are not fighting a battle, we are the artisans and sculptors of the future for ourselves and generations to come. Rarely do societies have opportunities to make such dramatic moves forward as we now have in this opportunity of today. Take pride and practice in being inclusive as we stride forward. In moving forward, create opportunity not only for yourself, but also for all. Hope is a wonderful thing to behold; but without opportunity, hope can become but a dream never achievable. We can, will, and must, create opportunity.

In the coming year I hope that we do not lose our spiritedness, but instead continue to build and make headway. I hope we all continue our campaign for change in government and business. We will succeed in moving forward once again, it will take much effort and good oversight on the part of each of us. We will make great strides in the months and years ahead in order to achieve the fruitions of good. Let's keep our enthusiasm progressing through these coming toughest of times. Let us use the light of goodness and love to motivate us with historic momentum.

I got a little misty-eyed, an older white man that never considered (never needed to consider) voting for a black man, when in this one day Barack got my vote and the job. I must tell you, it isn't so much for the racial impact, a definite plus, but more the hope, optimism, and intellectual capacity I see in this one person - Barack HUSSEIN Obama. We can use the middle name now, as I suspect we will hear, when his hand is on the Bible as he takes the oath of office. Congratulations!

All MSM have targeted in on the fact that Obama is our first BLACK President. Yes he is, but he did not run on his color he ran on the fact he's American. Race has not been a factor of this presidential race -- this race was on Change.

Barack is Mulatto

I will start by saying that I voted for Barack. I support him and I am proud to have his as our president. During the election process, I was afraid that it was going to be focused to much on race and now that he has won, I feel that it is. The problem I have is that Barack is mulatto. He has one black parent and one white parent. In my opinion that is one reason why he is a good choice. He represents the broad strokes of America. Listening to NPR this morning and other news outlets they have been interviewing African Americans who were quoteed as saying that "this is our day" and "We got it right". Who is we? Why is it that African American people must focus so heavily on his race? If he were Italian, you wouldn't here Italian people going on and on about it. There were quotes black evangelicals talking about how Martin Luther Kings dream has come true. Has it? It just frustrates me and irritates me that the "black" card has to get played at times like this. Another fine example would be Halle Berry. She is also mulatto, but when she won an oscar, black people were the first to celebrate her first "African American" oscar win. My question: If you are HALF white are you still considered African American? I am part German and part Italian. So yes I am white, but I am not racist at all. I have friends of many races and beleive in equality for all. I am aware of the history of the African American culture and what it means to have a president of mixed race win, but again the key word is mixed. I am not just saying these things becuase I am white. I feel Barack will unite us all, but I am already sick of the radical black people making this about an "historic" african American event and not about an American event.

Are you reluctant to vote for Obama because he is black? Hesitant to pull that lever or punch the keyboard even though his ideas and character are compelling? Do you think, if only Hillary had won I wouldn’t have this dilemma? To make matters even worse, are you hesitant to share your latent – and somewhat embarrassing -- uncomfortable feelings with others? Did you grow up in the 1940’s, 50’s or 60’s? If so, your feelings are perfectly understandable, especially if you grew up in a home where equality wasn’t taught. Have you always thought you were an open minded person, yet here you are, surprisingly reluctant to vote for Obama?

Where Were the Black Professionals When You Were Growing Up?

How many black professionals did you encounter growing up? Doctors? Dentists? TV reporters? Police and firemen? Managers? Lawyers? How many black kids were your classmates? Neighbors? Did you meet black kids at summer camp? Did you know that President Woodrow Wilson segregated the federal work force in 1913? And that it and the armed forces were legally segregated until Harry Truman issued two executive orders on July 26, 1948? Did you know that Truman’s now famous low approval ratings in 1948 – before Korea and firing Macarthur -- were due partially to his civil rights activism? Truman was furious when he learned in 1946 that Isaac Woodard, a black serviceman in uniform, returning home from the war, was blinded by a beating inflicted by police in South Carolina. His bus driver complained that Woodard caused trouble by asking the driver to stop so he could relieve himself. Besides that, Truman was the first president to address the NAACP in 1947.

Did you have relatives who told you blacks were dumb, lazy, and good for nothing? That’s what an uncle told my good friend Dennis in Tennessee in the 1950’s. When Dennis came home and told his mom he met the niggers, his school teacher mom was furious. She set Dennis straight and banned the uncle from her home. Dennis clearly remembers being taken around a poor black community and receiving the racist indoctrination from his uncle. “Dennis, these are niggers, and this is how they live. “ If his mom hadn’t sternly told him his uncle was full of crap, Dennis could be experiencing a similar dilemma. Dennis wound up marrying a black woman. They have three adorable teenage girls and are still married.

My mom drummed equality into my soft head. In the 1950’s my mom told me about a black singer named Marian Anderson who was not allowed to perform in Washington’s Constitution Hall in 1939 by its owners, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) , because she was black. It was one of the earliest incidents that brought racial discrimination to our attention. Where We Were and Where We Are Today -- From Slavery to Obama

Due to many factors, the black people you encountered growing up were probably maids, factory hands, garbage men, and laborers. They lived in segregated run down communities on the wrong side of the tracks. They spoke funny slang, hung around together, ate weird foods like collard greens, weren’t seen at the restaurants your folks ate in – except as busboys and waiters – BUT they were easily identified by their color.

So how did all this happen, and why in 2008 is our society suddenly chock-a -block with black professionals? Go to any school now and you will see black teachers, administrators, and principals – not just janitors. Go shopping and you will meet black supervisors. Buy a car, insurance, or clothes and you will often see black personnel. Turn on your TV and there is a black anchor or expert being interviewed in his area of expertise, which is not race relations.

And most intriguingly, why did many African students studying here in the 1980’s and 90’s return to Africa and tell me they had more white friends than black ones on campus? Why were black Africans readily accepted into white social circles when black Americans were either excluded or segregated themselves into all black dorms?

To get to the bottom of this, and to get you off the hook, let’s return to how black people wound up living on the wrong side of the tracks and how in 2008, many more of them are your neighbors or workmates. What in world changed? Why do kids of all colors in my son’s high school eat lunch together in 2008?

Blacks were the only group that came here involuntarily, in chains. They were captured by rival black tribesmen and sold to Arabs who subsequently sold them to slave dealers. Coming from different tribes, most of the slaves couldn’t even communicate with each other in a common language. Thousands of slaves from all over Africa converged in the American south and didn’t even share a common language or history. They were ripped away from their familiar world and, unlike prisoners of war, couldn’t even talk to each other initially. They weren’t allowed to learn how to read, write, or even swim.

They eventually had kids, but these kids could never be taught the legends or stories that make up a culture. They lacked the fundamental accouterments of culture that include shared beliefs, art, language, institutions, manners, dress, religion, rituals, and so forth. All they knew was the plantation and their narrow world. So when freed from slavery in 1865, they had no skills, capital, land, or even literacy. Their real culture was agriculture – plus what they created as slaves. They had the slang they created and, of course, each other. Since whites gave them few responsibilities, they developed few skills and consequently had the reputation of being lazy, shiftless, and dumb. They learned to believe they were inferior -- and often reinforced that stereotype by acting commensurately.

Imagine for a moment how that gets into your head. Most of what we become as adults is tattooed onto our soft brains as toddlers. My mom used examples to teach me that all people were equal. Having the term inferior branded onto your character often relegates a person to life’s junk heap. Ambition and dreams are snuffed out. People who define themselves as being not good or smart enough just shuffle along life’s paths. They don’t feel they can succeed, so often don’t even try.

If you think the effects of slavery and segregation have vanished, you are wrong. I recently chatted with a racially mixed mom – her dad was white mom black – at a football game both our kids were playing in. We started chatting about where we were from. She was from Louisiana so I asked about segregation in the 1950’s.

“My dad made me lay down on the rear floor of our car when we stopped to eat. I wasn’t allowed to go inside so he’d buy my favorite food and bring it to our car.” So imagine growing up and not being allowed to have a fun vacation meal with our parents on the way your Florida vacation. From the day she was born, society told her she wasn’t good enough to enter public facilities in her home state. And do these feelings trickle down to her 16 year old son in 2008? Probably.

After slavery ended, blacks had freedom FROM, not freedom TOO. Since they had no access to the adequately funded schools we white kids attended by the accidents of our births, they never learned the essential survival and social skills we white kids acquired naturally. Their segregated educations were inferior; they were banned from attending the flagship state universities in the south until 1962 when James Meredith was escorted to class at the University of Mississippi by federal marshals.

During the hundred years from emancipation in 1863 to 1962, black people just shuffled around generally carrying out jobs immigrants perform today. Consequently they banded together for community and self preservation. They lived in segregated communities, founded black churches and over 100 black universities and colleges, developed their own way of speaking English, and lived in an inferior parallel society.

Results of School Integration and the Civil and Voting Rights Acts Are Huge

The civil rights movement sprung out of the black churches in the 50’s and 60’s. This led, after much bloodshed, to the civil and voting rights bills being passed in the mid 1960’s. Prior to the voting rights act of 1965, many blacks were excluded from voting due to poll taxes, literacy tests, and residency requirements that were applied only to black voters, particularly in the south. That was barely two generations ago! When the Civil and Voting Rights bills were passed in 1964 and 65 and the Supreme Court ruled segregation was unconstitutional in 1954, the doors of limited privilege began to creak open.

As these doors opened in the 1950’s and 60’s, blacks began slowly entering mainstream society. In the 1970’s and 80’s we began seeing black reporters on TV and some blacks were featured in TV commercials. More and more black faces were seen on college campuses. Yes, many felt insecure and kept to themselves. Many had congenital inferiority complexes caused by lying on the floors of cars and being banned from selected business and public places, like bath rooms and schools. They also knew from their parents that keeping a low profile was a survival skill. Who wanted to wind up lynched like Emmet Till?

Now, just 46 years after James Meredith integrated Ole Miss, 20% of the student population there is composed of students from minority groups. Most surprisingly and positively, the university sponsored the prestigious first presidential debate this season. And who could have imagined in 1962 that this would occur and that one of the major candidates would be black? Black professionals are in every profession and serve all customers, not just blacks.

Beneath Our Radar, Dynamic Shifts are Taking Place in Schools Today

Folks my age just shake our heads in bewildered awe. It happened again yesterday at another football game on a glorious afternoon. I chatted with a well dressed white woman – native Houstonian -- from an oil services company.

As helmets loudly cracked on the field, we discussed Obama and, more importantly, how much racial mixing there was at both our high schools. She was astonished that her son once dated a black girl without the slightest sense of scandal or tittle-tattle. According to her son, kids of all colors shared lunch table in the cafeteria, and there was no racial tension. She was also astounded that these changes were occurring out of the blue and beneath her radar.

My son’s school is 30 percent each black, brown, white, and 10 percent Asian. They hang around together, enjoy the same lousy music, and don’t cluster in segregated groups. Looking at the legs of the football players from the stands provides a vision of the new America – every shade of human color is represented. It is the same watching 3000 kids as they stream out of school in the afternoon, chattering away in diverse groups. And when I ask my son about racism – he is mixed – he sighs and says “Dad that is such an old school question.” I don’t even ask any more.

Black accents are fading as more and more blacks enter mainstream society and worry more about their job prospects, portfolios, and retirements than racism. Parents of racially mixed kids (me) are dumbfounded and thrilled that the racism I anticipated when my little girl was born in 1986 never materialized. Problems arose more from selected black peers who felt there should be black solidarity. Like my African friends experienced, the racism came from the blacks, not the whites.

This occurred amongst some old-school Blacks when Obama initially declared his candidacy. Some blacks felt because he didn’t grow up in the ghetto he wasn’t a legitimate black person. They slowly came around, but initially there was much skepticism and resentment. Finally many realized that their sacrifices paved the way for an Obama to emerge.

Relax, Your Racial Dilemma is Normal

But you are still reluctant to vote for him. I understand. When you were growing up and learning how the world worked, blacks weren’t your peers at all. They did the mindless drudge and dirty work. They were aliens; a visible underclass. And because of their color – unlike similarly unschooled working class whites – they were easily identified. Hence, it was normal to chant, “Eeny meeny miney moe, catch a nigger by the toe.” Or to ask, “How far did you chase a nigger for that tie?” Then there were those familiar playground terms from the popular song “Colored Spade” 1960’s musical Hair. I’m a Colored spade, a nigger, black nigger, jungle bunny Jigaboo, coon, Pickaninny, mau mau,
Uncle Tom, Aunt Jemima, Little Black Sambo, Cotton pickin, 'Swamp guinea, junk man, Shoeshine boy,
Elevator operator, Table cleaner at Horn & Hardart, Slave, voodoo, Zombie, Ubangi lipped,
Flat nose, Tap dancin' Resident of Harlem…”

When you saw a fellow white person, you had no idea who he was, where he came from, or what he stood for, especially if he dressed appropriately. There were many poor whites, but their skin bestowed immunity on them. They blended in and did not have the stigma of coming to America as involuntary slaves. No one owned their great grandparents.

Since your impression of blacks was forged prior to blacks entering mainstream society, those old programs are still running in the background of your brain. And that is as normal as all the other values you picked up as a kid like rooting for your favorite sports team, liking a certain food, or knowing hard work is a virtue. You grew up seeing black people as chronic underachievers. Of course many were. They had no access to the institutions you accessed due to the lucky accident of your birth.

It Is Class, Not Color

These negative ideas do not automatically make you a racist. Now I’ll demonstrate that you really aren’t racist after all. When I quizzed African students who studied here, some mentioned that American blacks often gave them an ultimatum. Don’t hang out with whites. Choose us or them! If you hang out with whites you will not be welcome in our black society. A black girlfriend I had in 1979 when in grad school received the same treatment from her black peers. “Why are you dating a white boy? Aren’t we good enough?

It eventually dawned on me that racism was a socioeconomic phenomenon. And people were “racist” only because blacks stood out like sore thumbs due to their color. But why were Africans welcomed into white society, why did they readily accept the friendship of their white peers, and why didn’t they care about the threats they received from black Americans? One Somali friend of mine even hung out at a redneck country bar in Michigan where he was the only black person. He went because he liked the music and it was the easiest place to pick up girls. “And the redneck guys?” I asked. “I was polite, sized up the situation, wasn’t pushy, and gradually got to know everyone and became a regular. No one cared that I went home with white girls. They even asked around if I missed a few days.”

Soon I realized that the Africans were middle to upper class kids who had much more in common with middle to upper class white kids on campus than they did with black students who grew up in poor segregated communities . It was culture that mattered, not color. The Africans never defined people by color. They discriminated instead by tribe. Where they came from, everyone was black. Consequently they had little in common with black American students, aside from their shared skin color. The American blacks were yet another alien tribe to them – and a subservient one at that! Color counted for nothing, just like white skin is not the number one catalyst for white bonding.

The Africans were never denied anything in their home countries due to race. So they naturally hung out with their social class peers, white middle class kids. Few reported any racial problems in the 15-20 years I posed the question. They knew some of their most brutal repressive dictators, like Idi Amin from Uganda and Mengistu from Ethiopia, were black.

Now You Can Vote For Barack

And your perceived racism? A myth. You just want to hang out with your peers and don’t want to spend time with people you have little in common with. Since African students and white kids shared a common class background, they were well matched -- far better than black Americans whose criteria for friendship were based on shared discrimination and color. Black Americans and black Africans shared little in common at all, just pigment. Hence the reluctance of the African students to be friends with them just because they shared a common color.

Back to Barack. You are attracted to him. You like his message of hope. You admire how he took withering fire over Reverend Wright and survived. He is battle tested. You also recognize that McCain clumsily stumbles from issue to issue and has a weak grasp of economics. He said the fundamentals of our economy were strong, and then abruptly reversed himself just fours later. You like Obama’s choice for vice-president and think McCain used poor judgment and acted impulsively and irresponsibly when he chose Sarah Palin. You thought when McCain suspended his campaign it was a gimmick. You worry about your retirement, yet McCain offers no solutions. And you know you would vote for Obama in a heartbeat if only he were white.

Obama is black. But he is a 2008 Black man, not a 1948 model. But after just two generations of many blacks having access to the same institutions we attend, look what happened. In an amazingly short time, racism is vanishing from our kids. There are black professionals in every field. And that was just what Lyndon Johnson and civil rights leaders hoped for and anticipated in the 1960’s when the civil and voting rights bills were passed. The idea was that once the doors of opportunity were thrown open to all citizens, discrimination and racism would slowly fade away. And that is exactly what is happening in many of our schools today. Johnson also predicted that his civil rights legislation would set the Democratic Party back at least 25 years. He was absolutely right. The republicans capitalized on white resentment. Nixon’s southern strategy in 1968 was a wink and an approving nod to the racists. The message was, we understand your resentment towards civil rights legislation, and we support you. The South then flipped from voting democratic since reconstruction, to voting for the party of Lincoln, the GOP.Due to Supreme Court decisions and congressional legislation, blacks are represented in all professions. Black people have been elected as mayors of major cities since the1960’s. And now a black candidate is running for president.&nbs

Obama again shows his presidential qualities as he ignores the low level that McCain and his campaign seek. McCain again hopes to win by praying on fear and ignorance. His followers are looking more and more like skinheads.

McCain: Off the Rails

In an amazing rally today, the McCain campaign showed that it was running off the rails completely. At one point he began to tell his audience something, and then decided, "Never mind." At a pivotal moment, he called for Michael - I mean "Joe the Plumber", to come on stage, and then learned that Joe wasn't actually at the rally. And then, in the middle of his speech, he said something that sounds a bit like, "abrgjik". I kid you not. Listen to the speech. I replayed it a few times, because it sounded so very odd. It sounded like suddenly, he was speaking the language of an outer space alien. Which frankly, raises far too many truly frightening scenarios for me to contemplate.

And yet, for all of these rhetorical errors, that was not the most glaring nor revolting mistake of the speech. In McCain's bid to try to make American tax law, McCain's past policies, and Obama all sound socialist, McCain is now bringing up an old radio interview of Obama's, where Obama also used the R-word- redistribution. But here's where McCain has entered truly dangerous waters.

In this interview, Obama very clearly is speaking of the legacy of slavery. He speaks of how the civil rights movement lead to freedom for blacks, and the right to vote, but didn't redistribute income- and this still remains to be done. He speaks of mistakes the founding fathers made- as everyone acknowledges who has any understanding of the ammendment process in the US constitution. This is of course particularly true with ammendments like the 14th.

I recognize that some conservatives feel that everything is now right with the world, between races, and in regards to civil rights. I suspect- I hope- that those conservatives are a minority even among conservatives. Most recognize that one of the horrible legacies of slavery has been lingering racism and a continued relegation of the majority of blacks to the lower economic classes. Beyond that, there is the slightly more controversial proposal of compensation for slavery. After all, not only was there the broken promise of "40 acers and a mule", but all the wealth in terms of human productivity that was stolen from African lands, and stolen from the Africans themselves, made into slaves. To date there has been no true payment to those defrauded by the American government and American people. But the proposal is not so controversial that is has not been considered by the American Congress at times.

Some combination of these issues is what Obama was obviously referring to in his radio interview. From the context, I suspect that it was more of the former- establishing economic parity between the races in America, to remove the blemish and stain of slavery that shackles us all- rather than the more touchy issue of compensation. He was trying to seek a more just society, and make up for the wrongs that America has perpetrated on her citizens of colour.

And this...this is what McCain was referring to today in his speech, when he said that Obama was being socialist.

Before McCain denigrates calls for racial equality, it might be helpful for him to remember the immortal words of Frederick Douglass.

No man can put a chain about the ankle of his fellow man without at last finding the other end fastened about his own neck.

There has been so much too and fro about whether he is or his not. Has no one chosen to listen to the man? Are they all comfortable listening and believing all the divisive slurs on this patriotic man who happens to be Black? I didn’t notice skin color until they all insisted, now they want me to believe their negative things about him. I look and I listen and yes, I do hear his oratory ability although some have criticized that too as his ability to read a prompter. What ever he does, he is criticized by the few that will not listen. None are as blind as those who choose not to see.

Confronting blatant racial discrimination

I have been spending this beautiful fall Sunday afternoon calling NH voters. Several that I talked to politely told me that they are voting for McCain. I thank them for their time and hung up.

This last call however completely took me by surprise. The male voter I was calling was not home. A woman answered and offered to take a message. I just had enough time to tell her that I am a volunteer for the Obama campaign. She blurted out in horror as if she had seen a disease coming through the phone line, "Oh, NO No, No we don't vote black!".

I was speechless and felt sick to my stomach. I had to stop calling and pull myself together again.

After all it was only 45 years since Dr. King expressed his dream of equality in this country. I realized that racial discrimination exist, but I am extremely sad to see people can be still so blatant about it.

I Voted Proudly, Not Racially, Yesterday

After casting my absentee ballot in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the home of the University of Alabama and its No. 2 ranked Crimson Tide football team, the program long headed by Paul "Bear" Bryant and now under the able stewardship of Nick Sabin, I reflected upon the moment

... where I am

... and where we as citizens of the greatest nation on Earth are ... at this precipitous moment in time.

I feel so proud that we, as a nation, have finally progressed to the point where an African-American can realistically be elected President in the next 11 days ...

and where the electorate has finally realized again that we are one, that we are all in this together ... and must work together to survive and prosper ... as we (well, for most of us) once did ...

back in the glory days when hard work was its own reward and neighbors were friends ... and when we extended a hand to those who needed it ... where important values of honesty, love for our fellow man, character, strength of purpose, and lack of greed were passed down from generation to generation ...

before the day of "trickle-down" economics which allowed unregulated greed to appear legitimate and even noble in purpose... after all, if some of us got rich enough, some of it would eventually trickle down to the lower classes ... and wasn't that good enough?

Those "glory days" were not all good, though ... were they?

Prejudice, the state of judging without or before knowledge, was rampant. Discrimination on the basis of skin color, national origin, race, religion, age & sex was almost universally practiced, no where more true than in my home states of Georgia and Alabama.

We have come a long way in these matters. It looks like racial and sexual discrimination are finally on their last legs, that only the hardcore bigots and their misguided progeny (those that refuse to honestly and intelligently, much less spiritually or religiously, confront the issue) are left.

There is now hope that we as a nation can finally rid ourselves, our common destiny, from such unneeded and unhealthy baggage and move on together to face the genuine, critical issues of life in the 21st Century.

No, Obama's election is not required for this to happen. His campaign has forced America to confront the ugly issue of racial prejudice ... and America ... as a country ... has repudiated racism ... whether he prevails ... or not.

For this, all of us owe him a great debt.

As we do our forebears ... the members of the Underground Railway, Frederick Douglas, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Mississippi Freedom Riders, the marchers in Selma, those who withstood the blast of fire hoses in Birmingham to protest discrimination based on skin color, Rosa Parks, Senator John Lewis ... and many, many more who gave of themselves to advance the cause of civil rights ... for all of us.

And to Paul "Bear" Bryant, who integrated the football rosters of the University of Alabama and the Southeastern Conference, in a state governed by the racist bigot, George Wallace, by showing white Alabamians that we needed all of us to participate together if we were to continue to be able to compete with the likes of Southern Cal and other national football powers.

I grew up in southwestern Georgia, Moultrie & Albany were the towns, and in northern Alabama and ... thus ... was culturally bound to be the racist I became. I wasn't allowed to use the "N" word; instead I was taught by my "progressive" parents to refer to blacks as "colored". I held most of the usual racial stereotypes ... especially when it came to black females.

But, and I do mean "buttttt"; we, as members of the upper-middle class, had "maids" and "yardmen" and I came to know and to love Clementine, our housemaid for some 10 years and her husband, Andrew (I did not learn their last names until much later in life ... after both had died).

These were not inferior people. They taught me love, tolerance, patience and how to survive despite unpopular characteristics and beliefs. They, with all they had to endure, were remarkable Americans!

So, I ate in the car with Clem when we traveled to Florida on vacations while my parents dined inside in air-conditioned comfort. And I shook my young head in disgust at the farmers with their pick-ass handles who gathered on the street across from the Albany jail as Martin Luther King, Jr. led the Children's March in my hometown.

And ... when George Wallace (after making his infamous "Stand in the School House Door" at the university I would later attend) was shaking hands with everyone in the barbershop of the Stafford Hotel except the "shine boy", an elderly black man who greeted Wallace with extended hand and the gracious words, "Welcome, Gov'nor.", I refused to shake the hand of the governor of my state, much to the distress and embarrassment of my father ... who later told me that he completely understood my refusal....

And so, because of my life experiences I learned better and overcame the manacles and blinders of my upbringing and environment. I think we as a country have also, to a large degree, done just that. I am proud of myself, a former racist, for shedding tears of joy for being able to cast my vote for Barack Obama, who in 11 days will become the first African-American President of the greatest nation of earth! And, I am proud of Barack for the way he has made his case. And, I am proud of America for making it happen!

I am at peace... ....

Yes, I am!

I have seen the mountain top ... I am ready to move on now.

Race, again...

Hmmm: the age-old discussion of racism, and what it means today.

When it comes to racism, notwithstanding significant advancements in American race-relations over the past several decades, our nation still has a ways to go. Or do we?

To me, it seems that the "problem" rests not so much in the actual presence of racism in our socio-political system, but the perception of this problem. It has been said that perception is the measure of reality. By this standard, racism is very alive today. However, if we allow reality to correct our perception, we observe that an awesome change as taken place.

For the first time in history, America's gonna have a black president, voted in by all colors. Granted, the circumstances all seem just a bit "unrealistic", so that any number of variables slightly altered would dramatically change the situation. But they're here: those factors we've so long waited for. Our generation will manifest King’s dream.

Truly, among the most inspiring realities of the 2008 Presidential Race is the fact that we're not as racist as we once perceived ourselves to be--even as recent as six months ago. Granted, it’s not quite time to pat ourselves on the back. Though, it’s probably ‘bout time to join hands and sing, "Free at last, free at last."

Or maybe Kumbaya would be more appropriate. We’ll know on Nov 5.

Race, addendum...

I see your point.

But we all know McCain ain't gonna win... and no, it’s not a jinx on Obama to say so :)

That said...

I would say that most people have some perception of race as a part of the way things are; I believe they do, even if they are not racist themselves. They are conscious of it; it’s a culture/education issue.

The issue is not so much how one race relates to another, but more so the invisible wall that we've all grown up believing in over the last couple decades. The one we haven’t reevaluated for a while, seriously.

Remember, earlier this year, Obama had to face the race issue head on, partially in response to the Rev. Wright fiasco. The speech received national recognition, and was very necessary... because, nationally, people did perceive race as an "issue" in America, even if it was not personally an issue for them.

My hope is that we would abandon any perception not backed up by facts and experiences that concretely reaffirm themselves over time. Granted, racism does exist today... just not as wide-spread as we've been told. However, as long as we keep hearing and believing the contrary, racism in its most mythological form will reserve the reigns of a very real reality affecting the minds of us all.

My advice, let's just try to get along... that's what the majority of us want anyway. As for the evil minority... I guess we still love you too?

Vote Obama.
