Council Bluffs Community Organizer Spotlight

As an active volunteer in the Pottwattamie County Democratic Party and during the campaign here in Iowa, Susan Slauson has become one of President Obama’s most prominent supporters in Western Iowa. When Organizing for America was first starting, Susan naturally began leading health insurance reform events in June, and has become our Community Organizer for Council Bluffs.

Susan has led some of our most successful events in Iowa, including phone banks, health care discussions, and a health care organizing workshop. The picture below is from our “Send Off” event for Congressman King, where Susan helped organize a dozen residents to present thousands of signatures of support for health reform to Congressman Steve King.

Susan hopes to continue building relationships with potential volunteers in the area, and continue to creatively build support for President Obama’s reforms as they come up over the next year.

So, here i sit within the echoing silence of Kelly's Room of the First Street Community Center Mount Vernon Iowa.....LISTENING.....Listening to the deep subtle depths of the heart of reality. Within THE SPACE where the Masters gather, a small flame of a winter green flame coats the twenty foot square empty space ....a warm rich glow of peaceful solitude.

Our community seeks a strong sound foundation in which to reach out in play of our game of forming a more perfect union. A warm, secure, peaceful, creative, healthy, engaging, blissful playing field suitable for meeting each and every individual unique relationship in pure possibilities of play.

THE SPACE of the room, of infinite and eternal playing field of Kelly's Room is suitably framed by the words, "Beautiful Pure Perfect Love" for the integral informative conceptual magical Utopian ways of growing and sustaining communities through the ages.

"Dream BIG Dreams" is a movie about a process WE all co-create and co-design. A simple easy blueprint of economic development taken seed within the heart of oneself and being connected and networked, shared and danced into the heart of family, community, state and nation and the heart of reality.

A time to remember, Black Hawk, and all our ancestors that brought US to this point in time, this magical miraculous perspective with the heart of the sweat lodge within the heart of Kelly's Room.

Here during the process unfolding, George shares his 33 insightful ways of forming a more perfect union....in sharing his magical utopian vision of manifesting everyone's "Dream Big Dreams"

So, the process of WE...We the people making a movie to co-create a more perfect union is born. ...OUR vision OUR goal of playing the game whole heatedly together...to act as a blueprint integrating the nation, integrating the systems of dancing the ultimate health of oneself into the heart of reality.

Georgian opposition creates a self-defense units. Speaker discourages
Chairman of Georgian Parliament David Bakradze called on opposition leaders to abandon the idea of creating self-defense units to protect participants of protest actions, which take place on 9 April in Tbilisi.

"We already have the experience, when in 1992 the civil war in Tbilisi has started with the establishment of self-defense units, so the appeal to the leaders of the opposition - is responsible to take this idea," - said Bakradze, commenting on the establishment in the capital of Together.

It should be noted, members of the organization declared the beginning of patrols of the vicinity of protests at the residence of the head of state buildings, the Parliament and the Public Television. Under the plan, to patrol the territory will be the group of ten men.

Barradze has instructed the leadership of the MVD strengthen police patrol in the center of Tbilisi that the opposition did not fear, and ultimately do not create self-defense units.

Recall, according to the Georgian human rights organizations, since 9 April, a group of youths beat up more than 50 opposition supporters who were returning at night to picket their homes. The attackers, they said, moved to the black jeep with the shaded glasses, without numbers. Opposition leaders accused the police even in the establishment of punitive squads, beating the rally participants.

As reported, the Easter holiday period, shares in Tbilisi will continue, but will not be extensive. My fellow citizens -
I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.
That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.
These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.
Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met.
On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.
On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.
We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.
In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.
For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.
For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.
For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.
Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.
This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act - not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do.
Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.
What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.
Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control - and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart - not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.
As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort - even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.
For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.
To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.
To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.
As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment - a moment that will define a generation - it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.
For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.
Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends - hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism - these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.
This is the price and the promise of citizenship.
This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.
This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed - why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.
So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:
"Let it be told to the future world...that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet it."
America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

Only a year ago we were in IA?

I just watched the video from Dec. 31, 2007, of Barack talking about the IA caucus being only 3 days away . Was it only a year ago? It feels like a lifetime. He is my hero. My 3 year old son will always take Obama granted, the good that he is going to do, the goodwill that he has already helped us restore to our country after the drought. I am so grateful for this moment, this time, that it is ours.

Victor, IA - Change is Coming - Meeting

The Victor Library was the venue for the local Obama Presidential Transition Team Meeting held on Sunday, December 14, 2008. This meeting was held in conjunction with thousands of meetings held in homes and public venues all over the United States on this weekend.

Although the group was small due to many people having other committments, the discussions were quite often lively and stimulating. The group went over ways to follow the Obama transition activities, such as going on line to access change.gov. This allows a person to keep current with appointments of department leaders in the administration and read the administration's stands and plans on issues related to each subject (ie. economy, education, Iraq war, health and welfare, veteran's affairs, transportation, energy and environment, etc.). There is also a place on the site to send in concerns and/or recommendations on issues. Citizens are encouraged to give input. The names and addresses of our governor, local Iowa state house and senate representatives, and US senate and house represenatives were supplied to participants for another avenue of input.

It was discussed that there are many issues one could give input on either as a group or as in individual. The group voiced their agreement that it would like to participate in volunteerism within the community in ways that would benefit their fellow citizens. They also agreed they would like to hold further discussions to push forward issues that were important either at a local or national level.

President-Elect Barack Obama is encouraging strong citizen involvement in rebuilding the country. There can be a volunteer role for anyone and everyone.

Future meetings will be announced in the Herald.

Our Hard Working President-Elect

My husband and I campaigned heavily in an Iowa community of only 1000 people, most registered Republicans. We didn't win the precinct, but we did get more than half of the votes. We have not been surprised to see how quickly Barack Obama, got right in and started making wise decisions regarding who would fill positions in his administration.

What has surprised us is that the cynics have been happy with his picks too. We have just taken our que from Barack Obama and kept the discussions on a low key plane and with humility and a spirit of unity. If anyone can unite our country, Barack Obama can do it. We are so proud of him and the excellent job he is doing already!

Vilsack, why?

I really don't think that Vilsack is a good choice for Secretary of Agriculture, because of his ties to the GMO industry. The rational for using corn for energy is also a down side. He also signed a bill, when governor of Iowa that outlawed local communities from passing ordnances on what they wanted to do about GMO's in their community.

There are other people that should be considered who are not so conflicted as the former governor of Iowa is.

Please rethink this.

Last night in Des Moines, Obama supporters held a Get Out the Vote Rally with special guests Governor Chet Culver, Senator Tom Harkin, Congressman Leonard Boswell, Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge and other elected officials.

Well over 100 people joined in the rally to get fired up before we start getting out the vote today and everyone was ready for the prospect of turning Iowa blue. If you’d like to join your local neighborhood team to help get Iowans to the polls, click here.

California Calling

I just spent a few hours at the Swing State Mega-Phone Bank HQ in San Rafael, California (just a few miles from my home in Fairfax) making calls to people in Ohio and Iowa--urging them to vote on Tuesday. The center was really buzzing with Obama campaign supporters.

One full-time volunteer told me how California has become so strong in its calling support to battle-ground states--that it has relieved the campaign HQ's in actual battle-ground states (such as Florida) enough to allow for full concentration of resources toward on-the-ground, direct campaigning in those states! According to what I was told, the San Rafael HQ is the third most significant Obama campaign calling center in the United States (following Los Angeles and San Francisco).

It's great to have the opportunity to participate so broadly and significantly in this campaign. I plan to make as many calls as I can can--either from my computer, or from the call center from now until election day.

Lavery Getting Out the Vote

One of our best and most inspirational supporters here in Iowa is Lavery. He’s 82 and comes in everyday to make phone calls for at least 3-4 hours. And the only reason he leaves the office is because his oxygen tank runs low. He’s signed up to volunteer for everyday of GOTV and well as all day on Election Day--- and he will bring extra oxygen tanks so he can stay all day.

How are you helping to get out the vote?

We asked him what was inspiring him to get involved in this election:

“Barack is young, intelligent, with new ideas. I saw him in Le Claire Park and something told me this is the man I should vote for.
I cannot keep supporting him financially so I needed another way to do it. I am 82 and retired. I have done everything I have wanted to do in life. This campaign has given me new purpose in life. Also, I can tell people I worked for the President.”

Barack Obama looked a little tired in the Situation Room on CNN today. But he is not slowing down, even though he is leading in the polls four days before Election Day. He returned to Iowa to thank the Iowans who gave him their critical vote of confidence in his presidency during the primary.

Iowans gave Barack Obama the lift he needed when he needed it. I am almost certain that he will return the favor and Iowa will have a special place in his administration.

Hundreds of volunteers have already poured into the event and Get Out the Vote signup sheets are passing through the crowd. Music is being pumped in through several large sets of speaks placed strategically around the park and we’re hearing chants of Fired Up! Ready to Go!

There is a great atmosphere here, and some of the groups in these pictures are of Obama Organizing Teams. Here in Iowa, because of the intense organizing during the caucuses, tens of thousands of volunteers already knew each other, and these grassroots groups have formed as the foundation of our Get out the Vote efforts. OUR ENDORSEMENT
These are difficult times.
The United States is facing an economic crisis unlike any we’ve seen since the Great Depression.
Health care, food and fuel costs are skyrocketing and too many Americans are doing without. Some have to choose between eating, staying warm or taking their prescription medicine.
After more than five years, the war in Iraq continues and there does not appear to be an “end game” in sight. The conflict in Afghanistan has intensified and terror concerns have not dissipated since 9/11.
The next president has a daunting agenda and now more than ever, we need a leader who has vision, can inspire and will produce real solutions.
Barack Obama is that man.
Despite the critics who argue the junior senator from Illinois lacks experience, we believe Obama is exactly the kind of leader we need now.
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell perhaps said it best:
Obama has “displayed a steadiness, an intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge and an approach to looking at problems like [the economic crisis] and picking a vice president ...” he said, adding Obama “has given us a more inclusive, broader reach into the needs and aspirations of our people. He’s crossing lines — ethnic lines, racial lines, generational lines.”
Obama’s opponent, Sen. John McCain is a war veteran, an American hero and has had a distinguished career in the Senate.
For years, he was the moderate maverick who worked with both Republicans and Democrats. He was always taking an independent approach to issues impacting our country, including illegal immigration and social issues.
We concede that the Courier editorial board was split over this endorsement. McCain, after all, is well versed in a number of areas, including foreign policy matters and how Washington works. But the majority of our board felt McCain’s campaign has trekked too far to the right.
In the end, this debate is about making a choice between Obama and McCain. Who will do the best job in moving us away from the past eight years of economic instability, partisan bickering and “cowboy diplomacy?”
We believe it is Obama who has shown he is prepared to take on the serious challenges we face as a nation.
A week prior to the Iowa Caucuses, Obama told the editorial board that now is the time for something greater than ourselves.

Quad-City Times Endorses Barack Obama: Ready to Lead

Experience or change? If we had a nickel every time each word was uttered in this presidential campaign, we could bail out the reckless lenders, cover the war debt and provide another stimulus package. Yet those two words don’t begin to cover the skills and attributes necessary in our next president.

What about temperament, judgment, decision-making and knowledge? How about stamina, education and ethics?

These are among the considerations that support our enthusiastic endorsement of Barack Obama for president of the United States.

Already, Obama’s appeal and campaign organization is leading the biggest voter turnout in history, bringing millions of new voters to the polls, thereby strengthening our democracy.

Already, Obama is demonstrating presidential leadership and demeanor, displaying steely calm against an avalanche of unfair attacks, distortions and distractions.

Already, Obama has erased any concerns we had during the caucus campaigns by earning the support of all of his primary opponents, and picking one of our favorites as his running mate.

The biggest change we’ve experienced since the caucuses is in our assessment of John McCain. The straight talk that won our caucus endorsement has been consumed by campaign doublespeak and some fairly awful decisions for the guy wearing the experience mantle. John McCain approved the messages that made Paris Hilton and Joe the Plumber campaign issues. These sly distractions seemed beneath a true hero who earned his reputation by avoiding such nonsense. Most troubling is his vice presidential pick. Sarah Palin’s populist appeal holds promise. Her soaring political career track from hockey mom to Alaska governor simply isn’t enough to merit the giant step to the Oval Office.

We don’t question her potential. But today, she clearly is not ready to assume the presidency.

Barack Obama is. He’s experienced America at many levels: his Kansas roots; diverse Hawaii; elite Harvard; south side Chicago.

He’s demonstrated civic responsibility at just as many levels: organizing in neighborhoods, politicking in Chicago, legislating in Springfield, debating in Congress and traveling internationally on diplomatic missions.

Where his experience comes up short, he has sought out help, including Republicans like U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Obama picked a running mate who could assume the presidency tomorrow.

All along, Obama has been unwavering in his assertion that Afghanistan, not Iraq, is the target in our war on terrorism. Helping the middle class, not betting on trickle-down tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans, has been the consistent focus of his economic plan.

We support a presidential candidate predisposed toward reaching out to world leaders, not one entrenched in Cold War-style standoffs.

The clincher for us came in our Quad-City meetings with Obama as state senator, U.S. Senator and presidential candidate. In each instance, we’ve experienced consistent character, superior intellect, engaging curiosity and specific knowledge of our Quad-Cities.

We weren’t quite there last January when change began in Iowa. We are now.

We support Barack Obama for president.

THE REGISTER'S EDITORIAL BOARD • OCTOBER 25, 2008

Barely two years into Barack Obama's first term as a U.S. senator, he launched an unlikely presidential candidacy imbued, he acknowledged, with a "certain audacity."

Casualties were mounting in Iraq, memories of the government's failed response to Hurricane Katrina still stung, and a majority of Americans told pollsters they believed the country was on the wrong track.

Yet in announcing his presidential bid, Obama outlined a bold, hopeful vision for America:

"Let us be the generation that reshapes our economy to compete in the digital age. ... Let's be the generation that ensures our nation's workers are sharing in our prosperity. ... Let's be the generation that ends poverty in America. ... Let's be the generation that finally tackles our health-care crisis. ... Let's be the generation that finally frees America from the tyranny of oil."

Critics immediately cast his talk of hope and change as naive and his lack of history on the national and international stage as too risky for the presidency.

First test: winning the Iowa caucuses, perceived by many as an improbable feat for a black candidate in an overwhelmingly white state. But Obama believed in the power of his ideas and ideals, and the capacity of Americans to unite around them.

Eleven months later, after more than 80 days spent campaigning in the state, Iowans awarded him victory. They had heard his soaring oratory and sensed his uncommon intelligence, but they also witnessed much more: the consistency of his calls for unifying around common purpose, rather than pandering to age-old divisions, and the way he remained unflappable and his staff disciplined no matter what tumult the campaign trail delivered.

Those qualities have become even more pronounced this fall, during an increasingly negative general-election campaign against Republican Sen. John McCain and descent of the nation's economy into the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. It has been Obama, not the more experienced McCain, who kept his center as events tilted crazily.

Obama has earned the Register's endorsement for the presidency because of his steadfastness in the face of uncertainty, his clear-eyed vision for a more just America and his potential for rallying the country to do great things.

Would work to strengthen the struggling middle class

Obama's life story embodies America's promise: that someone from modest means can study, work and get ahead. His parents - his mother from Kansas and his father from Kenya - divorced when he was a child. His grandparents helped raise him, and his mother made sure he studied hard. Eventually, he became the first black editor of the Harvard Law Review and graduated magna cum laude.

Before law school, though, he worked as a community organizer in Chicago and saw that for too many families, the American promise of opportunity had faded: Schools were poor, wages had stagnated and jobs had shifted overseas in a globalizing economy.

Since his first visits to Iowa, Obama has correctly emphasized improved public schools and greater access to college as the investment that will buoy the American economy long-term. He favors a progressive tax policy, taxing those at the very highest rungs of income a little more to provide a little more help to those on the bottom rungs.

In a speech more than a year ago, long before this fall's financial crisis, he decried the nation's rising income inequality and the notion "that the market will correct all our misfortunes, and that there's no problem that can't be solved by another tax break that the wealthy didn't need."

Neither Obama nor McCain is an expert on the economy. But Obama appropriately places emphasis on strengthening the middle class. And as a state senator in Illinois, in the U.S. Senate and through the rigors of the campaign, he has shown a willingness to seek others' advice, listen and strive for consensus - crucial characteristics in troubled times.

Other key parts of Obama's agenda would help shore up the middle class and the U.S. economy for decades to come: Expanding health-insurance coverage to more Americans will lessen the threat that illness will bring financial ruin. Pumping research dollars into developing clean alternatives to fossil fuels and investing in energy efficiency will maintain America's technological edge and create good-paying green-collar jobs.

McCain has run erratic, disappointing campaign

Judging by their records and statements, both Obama and McCain promise to correct the worst abuses of the Bush administration: its arrogant, go-it-alone approach to foreign policy and its insidious insistence that maintaining national security requires embrace of torture and sacrifice of fundamental civil liberties.

McCain, like Obama, brought an appealing personal history to the campaign. He's a genuine American hero, enduring 5 ½ years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam while refusing early release, serving more than 20 years in the Navy, and taking unconventional stands that often opposed his party and popular sentiment during a quarter century in Congress. The Register's editorial board endorsed McCain for the Republican nomination and looked forward to a serious-minded contest between competing ideologies and worthy foes.

But it's as if McCain has lost his way, forfeiting principle for gain of a few points in the polls. He put on hold his long-sought quest for comprehensive immigration reform. Though widely regarded as a man of honor, he has overseen a campaign premised on purposeful distortions about Obama and his record.

Worst of all, in grasping for political edge in his choice of a running mate, he burdened his ticket and potentially the country with an individual utterly unqualified to ascend to the presidency. Before choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain emphasized the importance of experience and sound judgment in fighting terrorism and confronting a restive Russia and a rising China. He has also questioned Obama's readiness to be commander in chief. Then he picked a running mate who clearly isn't ready.

An appeal to bridge divisions, tackle problems

There are other good arguments for Obama's election. The next president might make several Supreme Court nominations. Obama promises to appoint justices with an expansive view of constitutional rights and equal justice. McCain's appointments more likely would continue the court's conservative shift and threaten abortion rights, search-and-seizure protections and other individual liberties.

Obama also is committed to withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq as quickly and as safely as possible. McCain talks about winning and success, but says little about when troops will come home.

None of what Obama outlines will be easy, whether removing troops from Iraq without chaos or addressing climate change without stunting the economy.

In recent years, America has shrunk from big challenges, stymied by "the smallness of our politics" and "our chronic avoidance of tough decisions," as Obama put it in his announcement speech.

Tackling big problems will first require Americans to bridge divisions, he has said, and then roll up our sleeves.

That message continues to resonate with Iowans. In a September Iowa Poll, 54 percent of respondents rated Obama as the candidate who would be most successful in unifying the country, an 18-point edge over McCain.

When Obama first met with the Register's editorial board more than a year ago, he emphasized that when deciding to run, "I wasn't simply a young man in a hurry."

"I think there's this particular window right now where the country is hungry for change, and is also hungry to be brought together, as opposed to being driven apart," he said. "And I thought that the particular skills that I have, of bringing people from diverse backgrounds across lines of race or party or region or faith to focus on solving problems, was a particularly useful and needed skill right now."

Indeed, it is. An Obama presidency presents the best hope for a unified America that aspires to greatness again.

Leach touts Obama to Republicans, independents

Former U.S. Rep. Jim Leach wants his fellow republicans to do what he did earlier this summer. The eastern Iowan took a pass on his party's presidential nominee and went to Denver for a convention speech supporting Barack Obama.
The tenor of the election has played a factor in the longtime congressman's decision.
"To me, Senator Obama, is very much in the category of someone trying to bring the country together," Leach said. "And then, if you look at some of the words out there, my party's candidates have been using the 's' word, and by that I mean socialism. It's not socialist to offer a much bigger middle-class tax cut than Senator McCain. It's not socialist to support ethanol and wind energy, which are so critical to northwest Iowa."

I think for those who really think we need a new approach to world affairs, I think Senator Obama is really presenting an alternative approach that is very much rooted in American history and American values and will symbolize great change at a time when we need great change. We have never gone through a period in which the American brand has been more challenged than it is today."

Leach also said he is "exceptionally impressed" with the quality of the advisors Obama has assembled in the areas of economics and foreign policy.
"If you look at the Iowa economy and if you look at the northwest Iowa economy in particular, Obama in his brief career has been a strong advocate of wind energy," he said. "Senator McCain has voted against it at every turn. Obama has been a strong advocate of ethanol. Senator McCain has maintained stark opposition to ethanol. That is a profound contrast for Iowa economics."
The former congressman also has confidence in Obama's tax policy.
"Obama has carved out a very unique position," Leach said. "It's the first time I've ever known this contrast. He has a far bigger middle-class tax cut than Senator McCain does. Now, he also has a higher income tax increase, so what he's trying to suggest is: We've got to create a new fairness back in the tax code so one can expect higher income tax brackets to go up to the range where they were in the Clinton years."
Prior to his Spencer stop, Leach made an appearance in Sioux City. He has stops planned in Mason City and Waterloo on Saturday.

Obama to Leave Trail & Visit Ailing Grandmother in Hawaii

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will leave the campaign trail to go to Hawaii this week to visit the ailing grandmother who helped raise him, an aide said on Monday.

"Recently his grandmother has become ill and in the last few weeks her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious," said Obama aide Robert Gibbs.

Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who will be 86 on Sunday, helped raise him along with his mother, Ann Dunham, and his grandfather, Stanley Dunham.

Gibbs would not discuss the nature of her illness.

Obama adviser: Cut troop presence in Iraq; deploy more to Afghanistan
In 2002, Barack Obama stood up to oppose the invasion of Iraq, against the tide of popular opinion. He warned that America's first priority must be to win the fight against Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida in Afghanistan, from where they directed the atrocities of Sept. 11.
Obama was right then, as many supporters of the war in Iraq now concede. That war has become an indefinite occupation with no clear strategy for success. Worse, the diversion of resources and strategic focus to Iraq has meant lost ground in Afghanistan.
As president, Obama will lead the United States and its allies to victory against the Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan - the real central front in the war on terrorism. He will start by directing the Joint Chiefs to plan for and execute a responsible redeployment of American combat forces from Iraq.
For six years, our troops in Iraq have done everything we've asked. They've succeeded against terrible odds to reduce violence in Iraq, in particular by deploying new counterinsurgency methods and by brokering partnerships with local leaders. That success demonstrates, however, that military force alone cannot produce the political settlements needed to end their civil war. The Iraqis must act to create their own peace.
Our best leverage is to reduce our troop presence, while committing to and sustaining the hard diplomatic work that will be necessary to ensure a viable Iraq.
In Afghanistan, beginning with the deployment of at least two additional combat brigades, Obama will also reinforce and restructure our military, counterterrorism and civilian resources there. The United States and our NATO allies will defeat al-Qaida and the Taliban, provide security and stability to the elected government and begin to dismantle the terrorist networks that again find sanctuary along the border with Pakistan.
Pakistan, too, must eliminate the terrorist training camps on its territory, evict foreign fighters and prevent the Taliban from using Pakistan to stage attacks against the United States, our NATO allies and the Afghan people. Obama would condition U.S. military aid to Pakistan on the progress it makes in meeting these requirements.
Finally, Obama will deliberately engage the citizenry in Afghanistan and Iraq to dry up support for terror and extremism.
The responsible redeployment of our forces from Iraq to Afghanistan is the vital first steps of a strategy for lasting American success. Obama will make that strategy our path to victory.
Obama adviser: robust diplomacy; restore trust in America
Winning the fight against the Taliban and al-Qaida will be the single most important objective of Barack Obama's first term as president. But this is just the beginning of what we must achieve.

In the 21st century, confronting unconventional threats such as terrorism, nuclear proliferation and climate change will require the United States to secure the cooperation of other countries. For this, we must restore the trust in America that makes American leadership possible.
The next president must use all the tools in its arsenal to keep weapons of mass destruction out of terrorists' hands. Obama intends to strengthen the U.S. military, which has been stretched to its breaking point. He also knows that neither tough talk nor silence is a substitute for aggressive diplomacy. Obama will end the timidity that too long has excused inaction and allowed Iran and other dangerous states to gain strength. A confident United States will engage friend and foe alike. Obama will make plain that the United States will confront threats to our liberty or safety, but work with all those willing to make common cause with progress.
Obama also knows that any diplomacy will fail if those who would be our friends suffer the tyrannies of anarchy and poverty. Freedom must mean freedom from fear, whether from dictators or lawless chaos, and whether from the bondage of an empty stomach or an uneducated mind. With China rising, and Russia resurgent, the world is eager to see the restoration of tough and principled U.S. leadership.

That is why Obama will focus American support on helping struggling countries to build the governing institutions of modern societies. That is also why Obama will make poverty reduction a central part of our effort to keep Americans safe.
But none of what we must accomplish will be possible without trust in America, and in the American example. As president, Obama will demonstrate that we do not export our prisoners for torture. We do not lock suspects away forever without charge. We do not betray our Constitution to spy on our citizens. And in the United States of America, no person - especially not the president - is above the law.

As president, Obama will start at home to rebuild the strength of the American idea that others have followed. For it is U.S. leadership across the globe that will make us prosperous and secure.

Recognizing the discontent in the country with the past eight years, McCain has jumped on the “change” bandwagon. But no matter how many times he invokes the “maverick” mantle, in the areas that are most important to most Americans a McCain presidency has the worrying potential to be a continuation of the failed policies of the past.

McCain is wrong on the war, wrong on taxes, wrong on health care and, from a purely Iowa perspective, wrong on ethanol. American-made ethanol and other biofuels should remain an important part of the answer as we work toward energy independence.

The nation needs someone who has the temperament, the intelligence, the perspective, the vision and the compassion to steer us through the obstacles ahead.

Obama has emerged from the crucible of the campaign as someone who is poised under pressure, a natural-born leader who inspires both by word and deed.

He recognizes that our problems are shared, and he calls upon each of us to take responsibility for dealing with challenges in a way perhaps not seen since John F. Kennedy implored the nation’s citizens to ask “... what you can do for your country.”

The problems are real and the solutions will not be easy, but Obama shows great faith in the ability of Americans to rise to the occasion. His own life story is evidence of that potential.

Perhaps most significant is Obama’s view of the world and his intellectual curiosity. His is not a stark one-dimensional viewpoint where everything is either good or bad, right or wrong, black or white. He recognizes rightly that the world and its problems are presented in shades of gray and that the solutions to those problems are likewise multi-dimensional.

With Obama it’s not “America: Love it or leave it.” Rather it’s “America: Love it enough to make it better.” His enthusiasm and charisma can go a long way toward healing this country and uniting us in common purpose.

Our choice for the job is Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.
He's a man of high intellect, a point even his opponent is forced to acknowledge. Few gave him a chance to beat the Clinton machine to the nomination, but he had it wrapped up before the final primaries.
In Obama, Americans have hope for genuine change from the failed policies of the George W. Bush administration, policies that led us into an unnecessary war in Iraq, eroded our credibility around the world and turned a regulatory blind eye that has fueled the current economic crisis.

He knows removing troops from Iraq must be done carefully, but must be done as soon as possible. The Iraqi government must take more responsibility for its own security.
Given the plate left behind by the current president, the next four years will be excruciatingly challenging for the next administration.
With Sen. Joe Biden as vice president, an Obama administration will have the experience to handle the job.

Senator Dick Durbin's Visit to Iowa

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) just got finished with his visit to Iowa and was able to stop in Marion, Tama, Iowa City, Muscatine, Bettendorf, Davenport. He met with hundreds of supporters and undecided voters to talk about Barack and early voting here in Iowa.

We've got a few picture of his events below, and John Deeth, a blogger from Iowa City, gives a great re-cap from his visit.

Durbin doesn't mind being 'the other Illinois Senator'

Dick Durbin, the senior senator from Illinois, doesn't mind at all that he's being overshadowed by his junior colleague, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

"It reminds me of a baseball player who's been on the team for a while, and he's got a good batting average, people like him, and along comes this MVP rookie, and the next thing you know, you're in the World Series," Durbin, the Assistant Majority Leader in the Senate, told Iowa Independent. "That's the way I feel. Along came Barack, and I could see our party changing, and I could see our country changing. I couldn't be happier."

Durbin is Downstate to Obama's South Side, a folksy and conversational contrast to Obama's oratory, but the two have long been political allies. Durbin was one of Obama's earliest supporters, and traveled to Iowa with Obama on the day Obama announced his candidacy in February 2007.

“Iowa launched the campaign of Barack Obama for president" in the caucuses, Durbin told the midday crowd of students. "That really was the beginning. Now we've gotta close the deal.”

“20 years from now people are going to as you where were you when Barack Obama was elected, and you don't want to say you were down at Culver's eating butter burgers," said Durbin. "You want to day you were part of history.” Part of the pitch was to encourage students to vote early to free up more time to help get out the vote on Election Day. The senator steered voters toward a satellite voting site at the Old Capitol Mall, two blocks to the south. “I don't want to encourage you to cut classes and vote early... but it is Friday afternoon.” Over 2,500 voters took advantage of the five days of voting at Old Capitol Mall, which ended Friday. More sites open beginning Monday.

“The people who need tax breaks are not the wealthiest Americans," said Durbin. "The people who need tax breaks are your moms and dads sending you to college. The economy is a mess because we have followed the lead of George Bush.”

Durbin, as most Democratic surrogate speakers do, praised John McCain the Man while opposing McCain on policy. “John McCain is a great guy. He's served our country well. But when we look to the future we need leaders who look to the future. Barack Obama gets it. He gets it better than I do to be honest.”

IOWA IN THE NEWS: Campaign Robocalls Anger Some Iowa Voters

Campaign Robocalls Anger Some Iowa Voters

Some central Iowa voters said a voicemail message on behalf of Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign has gone too far.

The automated messages, also known as robocalls, have been ringing phones in Iowa homes since the last presidential debate. The message talks about a relationship between Sen. Barack Obama and '60s radical Bill Ayers.

"You need to know Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home and killed Americans," the message said.

A report by Time Magazine and The Chicago Sun-Times said no one was ever injured in the attacks by Ayers and his group.

Obama said during Wednesday's debate that he met Ayers when he served on a board with him, many years after Ayers' involvement with the Weather Underground.

"It was vicious," said independent voter Marilyn Greene. "It was a hateful, vicious message."

She said there's too much on the line in this election for candidates to stoop to this level.

"Stick to the issues," she said. "What can you do? What are you looking toward?"

"That's clearly a misrepresentation and it's brazen and outrageous," said Tina Fisher, who also got one of the phone calls. "This, to me, suggests total loss of control and, quite frankly, seems a little desperate."

Fisher said she felt the calls go against the message McCain has tried to send out on the campaign trail, especially during an appearance last week.

"When that gentleman said he was scared of Barack Obama, McCain said you have nothing to fear," Fisher said.

"He's a decent, family man, a citizen," McCain said to another supporter about Obama. "I just happen to have disagreements with him on fundamental issues."

A spokesman for the Iowa Republican Party said he was unaware of the messages. The McCain campaign did not return Newschannel 8's phone calls.

Jim McGovern Speaks at the Iowa Hunger Summit

Congressman Jim McGovern hit a home run for Senator Obama at the Iowa Hunger Summit yesterday in Des Moines. In a featured event of the World Food Prize Symposium, McGovern debated Jim Moseley on the presidential candidate's views on hunger. For those of you who know Jim McGovern I need not say more – he is a leader in Congress on hunger issues and he was knowledgeable, passionate, and specific about how a President Obama would make ending hunger a true national priority.

He put considerable emphasis on the Obama pledge to end childhood hunger by 2015 and on the imperative of stronger funding for America's nutrition programs. McGovern also did not miss the opportunity to observe that our spending $10 billion a month in Iraq denies our nation the resources needed to change the direction of our country. The audience of about 300 clearly expressed their warm appreciation for the Obama message that McGovern helped to deliver.

Before the discussion, attendees ate a lunch featuring meals used by Iowa-based organizations in food assistance and hunger-relief efforts. The picture above shows some of those meals. Young voters: You have our attention

IOWA CITY — Four hundred and sixty-eight people, mostly University of Iowa students, lined up outside the early voting site in the Old Capitol Town Center on Monday.
Meanwhile, 218 people voted at Mayflower Residence Hall as a full schedule of daily satellite voting kicked off in Johnson County, the county Auditor’s Office reported.
A galvanized student population is demonstrating fervor rivaling what it showed during last year’s city election here, when a proposed 21-and-older bar ordinance was defeated, largely because of a passionate student voting base.
The Gazette interviewed 30 UI students leading up to tonight’s final presidential debate between Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama and 29 people said they will vote in the Nov. 4 election. The who’s and whys, however, greatly varied.
“Obviously, since we’re the future generation, it’s our responsibility,” said freshman Marit Berg, 18, of Waukesha, Wis. Berg voted for Obama at the Old Capitol Town Center site.
Four of every five eligible voters ages 18 to 24 is registered to vote in Johnson County going into this week. They comprised 21,471 voters, up from 18,485, or 68.5 percent of the eligible 18- to 24year-olds, last year.
That’s a staggering number, even by standards in Johnson County, which has a liberal university town, where political activity usually is high and people are inundated by political commercials and brochures.
“It’s an interesting place,” said Lisa Allen, deputy auditor of elections in the county.
Interestingly, several students planning to vote still have not determined for whom. For many, the economy will be a main factor.
Freshman Seth Mosbrucker, 19, of Bettendorf, said, “I’m going to vote for the person who I think will best suit the economy right now.” He added, “I want my money.” UI freshman Maggie O’Brien, 18, of Crystal Lake, Ill., said she doesn’t feel she understands enough, especially economic issues, yet to make an informed decision.
“Right now I’m just trying to take everything into consideration so that I understand,” she said. “I just want to make sure I know everything.” Undecided Nick Westlund, a 19-year-old sophomore from Cedar Rapids, said, “I’m definitely trying to pay more attention this election, and that’s why I want to be sure I’m voting for someone who’s representing my ideas.” Obama supporters said he’ll bring change, though what that change represents varied among students.
Daniel Smith, 22, a Minden junior, said he wants to see change in the government.
Andrew Weber, 18, an Iowa City freshman, said Obama’s different from many politicians because “he’s not necessarily about America being the best, but about America trying to be a team player.”

Alliance for Retired Americans Endorses Obama

Citing his strong support for Social Security in a time of economic anxiety, the national Alliance for Retired Americans today endorsed Senator Barack Obama for President.

“Retirees are more worried than ever,” said Alliance President George J. Kourpias, adding, “not only are they concerned about their own retirement security, but they worry about what lies ahead for their children and grandchildren.”

Iowa Alliance members marked the endorsement with an event this morning in Des Moines. U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) was the featured speaker.

“Barack Obama opposes Social Security privatization, because he knows that we can’t gamble away our savings on Wall Street. He will fix our health care mess, lower the cost of prescription drugs, and do away with income taxes for seniors earning less than $50,000. We are proud to support the Obama-Biden ticket,” Kourpias said.

In contrast, Kourpias noted, John McCain fully embraces President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security, having voted three times to take money out of the Social Security Trust Fund and create private accounts tied to the roulette wheel of the stock market.

“George Bush and John McCain must be the only two people left who think Wall Street is good place for Social Security,” said Don Rowen, President of the Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans, which represents 30,000 members. According to the Congressional Budget Office, Americans’ retirement accounts have lost up to $2 trillion in the past 15 months.

Rowen said that retirees were “deeply offended” this summer when John McCain, who receives $23,000 in annual benefits, said it was “an absolute disgrace” that younger workers must pay for current Social Security beneficiaries. “Over 500,000 Iowa residents receive Social Security – they are our elderly, our widows and widowers, and our young children who have seen a parent die. Helping them is not a disgrace,” Rowen said.

According to the October 6 Wall Street Journal, Senator McCain would pay for his health care plan by cutting $1.3 trillion in Medicare and Medicaid over ten years. Kourpias said the McCain health care plan, which would lead many companies to eliminate retiree health benefits, would be “paid for on the backs of millions of senior citizens.” Under our increasingly privatized Medicare program, Kourpias added, “many seniors are paying more and getting less” for their medical bills and prescription drugs.

The 3.5 million member Alliance has paid staff and grassroots activists in key states and congressional districts. It is also running paid advertising to educate and mobilize retirees on Senator McCain’s record on Social Security.

Fitzgerald: We’re going through a ‘crisis of confidence’

OTTUMWA — Iowa Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald wasn’t supposed to be quite this well positioned as a Democratic campaigner in the final weeks before election day.

Yes, the economy is always an issue. And, yes, you could expect a state treasurer to have some ideas about it. But no one expected massive 700-point plunges on Wall Street or daily doses of triple-digit drops.

Fitzgerald thinks Iowa’s growing ethanol and biofuels economy has helped the state withstand the first blows from the national economic crisis. But even those areas are feeling the pinch as lending dries up and businesses find it next to impossible to launch or expand. And Fitzgerald thinks that places a profound emphasis on the need for leadership that can inspire.

“This crisis we’re going through is more a crisis of confidence than anything else,” he said.

Getting through a crisis of confidence requires something more than an economic crunch or a financial slowdown. Style matters along with substance. People remember Franklin Roosevelt’s Depression-era “fireside chats,” even though he averaged fewer than three per year between 1933 and 1944. But Roosevelt used those occasions to project a reassuring presence.

All of this explains why Fitzgerald is spending time out on the road, campaigning for Barack Obama’s presidential bid. He says Obama has presented a consistent concern for the economy and has the ability to better work with Congress.

And Fitzgerald says Obama will be better positioned after November than he was the first time he tried to address U.S. lending regulations. Both Obama and John McCain introduced Senate bills to restrict the riskiest home loans. Neither bill went anywhere.

Fitzgerald sees a fundamental difference between Obama’s first attempt and one made as president. Presidents are de facto leaders of their party, and Obama would receive a mandate by winning the election. Both of those factors lend a proposal more weight than that given to a freshman senator’s suggestion.

Obama currently enjoys a solid lead in Iowa. Many experts don’t even consider the Iowa a swing state anymore. But there’s still three weeks worth of campaign left. And no one on either side is taking anything for granted.

That, after all, is why Fitzgerald was barnstorming southeast Iowa on Friday.

Bush 2004 States Are Tipping to Obama: John Nichols in The Nation

The national polls are instructive early in the fall presidential campaign season. They tell us whether a candidate has strength, momentum, a chance.

But as the campaign enters its final stage -- with election day less than a month away -- the numbers from the states start to matter. That's where the electoral votes start to pile up. So what of the battleground states? Forget about states, competitive or otherwise, that backed Democrat John Kerry in 2004.

The latest polls from all of them favor Democrat Barack Obama this year. (Indeed, the analysts at Real Clear Politics have in recent days moved four 2004 states Kerry states that were supposed to be battlegrounds this year -- Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Pennsylvania -- from "Leans Obama" status to "Solid Obama.")

What of the states that backed Republican George Bush in 2004? Where are they trending. Here's something to ponder:

In 2004, Bush secured the presidency with the electoral votes of: Colorado Florida Iowa Missouri Nevada New Mexico North Carolina Ohio Florida

As of today, the Real Clear Politics poll of polls for each state -- which averages all the recent surveys of voters -- has Obama winning every one of these battlegrounds. If the election were held today, and if the polls proved correct, Obama would win the Electoral College by a margin of 364 votes to 174 -- a split roughly parallel to that in the 1996 race between Democrat Bill Clinton and Republican Bob Dole.

First Newspaper Endorsement in Iowa: Storm Lake Times

Obama for president
Enough is enough. The Republicans have had eight years to mess
up this country and it¹s time for the Democrats to put their hand to the
tiller. It¹s time to make history and elect Barack Obama of Illinois
president in November.
The Republicans had their chance. They controlled Congress and
the White House for six of the last eight years. They have run roughshod
over civil rights, confused the Bible with the Constitution, started a huge
war in Iraq based on a pack of lies served up by the Bush Administration,
run up the national debt to frightening heights and now propose to bail out
the corporate chieftains who put us in this financial mess.

We can¹t stand much more of this trip.
We need to turn the ship of state around and run it in a
different direction.

Trouble is, John McCain is using the same set of navigational
tools as George W. Bush. McCain built a career tearing down financial
regulation. He refused to accept a timetable for our troops to leave Iraq,
despite the Iraqi government demanding one. He opposes incentives for
renewable fuels production that could help wean us off our dependence on
oil. He wants to appoint a commission to study the financial mess we¹re in.
It¹s just more of the same old tired Republican map.

Obama presents a different face and tack. He will set out from
Day One to restore our damaged alliances around the world. He will redirect
our military attention from Iraq, which never presented an existential
threat to the United States, to the fight against Al Qaeda ‹ the outfit that
actually did attack us. He wants to restore regulation to the financial
markets, reduce the crippling national debt with a responsible tax policy,
and, most important, set out to actually reduce our dependence on oil with a
$150 billion renewable energy initiative.

Forget about the caricatures if you can ‹ Obama the radical and
McCain the doddering old man. Just look at the record: McCain has been
marching in lockstep with George W. Bush throughout most of the last eight
years. Obama opposed attacking Iraq from the very start, urging us to pay
attention instead to Afghanistan and Pakistan where Al Qaeda gains succor.
McCain voted against renewable energy incentives at every opportunity; Obama
has been a full-throated supporter of ethanol and wind energy who voted for
the most recent farm bill that promotes both.

McCain admits his hot temper and impulsive decision-making.
Obama is criticized for being too analytical, too cool, too cerebral. George
W. Bush and John McCain have proven how disastrous our damn-the-torpedoes
strategy has been. We¹re ready for a president who prefers to think before
lobbing.

We¹re for a president who wants to shut down the US torture
program, who wants to pay teachers more, who wants to put religious and
racial divisions off to the side. We¹re for a president who wants to support
a budding bio-energy industry that holds out hope for renewing rural Iowa.
We want a president who takes climate change seriously.

A note about the rest of the ticket: Obama¹s vice presidential nominee, Joe Biden of Delaware, is the foremost authority in the Senate on Middle Eastern affairs. McCain¹s nominee, Sarah Palin, couldn¹t describe what the Bush Doctrine is (that the United States reserves the right to
attack any country if we think that country poses an imminent threat to us). Either person is a heartbeat away from the presidency, and Biden clearly is better prepared.

Iowans should vote their self-interest and their national interest in November by casting their ballots for Barack Obama. It¹s time to set the ship of state on the right course again, holding out a beacon of liberty to the world and justice to the nation. Those are the stakes.

In the News: Governor Culver touts Obama's energy plan at TPI

Governor Culver touts Obama’s energy plan at TPI

Iowa Governor Chet Culver made a stop in Newton Wednesday. He was part of a roundtable discussion on alternate energy at TPI Composites and stumping for presidential candidate Barack Obama’s energy plan.

Culver also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of wind energy field to the creation of new jobs in Iowa.

“A recent study found that 20 percent of our energy needs could be met with wind energy,” Culver said. If that should come to pass, Culver said, the industry would create 50,000 permanent jobs in Iowa, as well as 150,000 building and construction jobs installing the towers.

Tom Filer of Clipper Windpower in Cedar Rapids, maker of wind turbines, said his company has been in business for three years in Iowa and is currently selling $1 billion in wind turbines per year.

“The wind industry is one of the few industries investing in rural America right now,” Filer said.

Culver said Iowa is finding ways to streamline the process of getting wind generating towers up and running.

“We want to be the Silicon Valley of the wind energy industry in the Midwest,” Culver said.

Iowa could become a leader in education and training in wind energy as well, Culver said.

Also part of the roundtable discussion were two students from Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, currently enrolled in the Wind Energy and Turbine Technology program. The program is the first of its kind in Iowa and Culver said it is critical toward helping meet the growing demand for skilled technicians who can install, maintain and service modern wind turbines.

Culver said Obama’s energy plan was important for the state.

“Strong energy policy will only help us grow here in Iowa,” Culver said.

My Detailed 2008 Election Predictions for All 50 States

My Detailed 2008 Presidential Election Predictions!

You can check out your own state and see how every demographic group will likely break down in this election.

Today I made some minor changes to my predictions after news broke that McCain was abandoning his Michigan campaign, and putting resources into Indiana and Pennsylvania. I also made some very minor changes to Minnesota, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio after looking at some new polling data. These changes were minor and did not change the eventual electoral outcome in any of the states, but instead solidified Obama's lead in those states.

Let me first explain how these election projections were made. Each State was carefully researched for the most recent census and other important demographic data. Using State by State U.S. Census data I broke down the state by Gender, Race, Party Affiliation, Age, Education Level, and Religion.

Using a complex formula I did the following, I created a Demographic profile of individuals. (ex. Men-White-Democrat-18 to 44-College Educated-Catholic) There were about 216 Different Demographic Groups represented.

Next I created a two part formula, the first was issue oriented, the second demographic oriented based on CNN Election 2004 Exit Polls.(http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/) The issues represented a wide variety of issues from Women's Issues, to Urban and Rural Issues, Foreign Policy and Economic Policy. I also included cultural issues such as Gun Rights and Racial Issues.

By answering a series of Yes/No Questions regarding those issues, I assigned specific numerical values to each question either Negative (liberal) or Positive (conservative).

On the Demographic formula I assigned importance based on exit polls from CNN. For instance Party is more important than Age or Gender. Race is more important than Gender etc.

The end result is a formula that is about 90%-95% accurate. I double checked the results against Exit Poll Data from 2004, and they match up remarkably well. Political Party numbers do tend to be under-represented in my formulas but do match up fairly accurately, and do balance out in the end. I used Exit Poll data, and numbers of Democrats and Republicans in the state legislatures to determine likely voter models for each political party.

HERE ARE THE FINAL RESULTS:

I project that Barack Obama will become the 44th President of the United States!

I project that Barack Obama will win with 338 Electoral Votes to John McCain's 200 Electoral Votes. (270 needed to win)

Obama will win 26 States and the District of Columbia. McCain will win 24 States.

Obama will win 51.12% of the Total Popular Vote; 67,531,664 - 338 Electoral Votes

McCain will win 47.03% of the Total Popular Vote; 62,130,227 - 200 Electoral Votes

Nader, McKinney, Barr and others will win 1.86% of the Vote; 2,451,238 - 0 Electoral Votes

TOTAL VOTES: 132,113,129 - 538 Electoral Votes

Projected difference between Obama and McCain: +4.09%

Do-it-yourself yard signs in Iowa

Ben and Tricia wanted a yard sign people would notice, one that expressed urgency and couldn’t be ignored.

Unlike most, they made their own.

Located in Coralville, their “countdown to change” sign is the fruit of one month’s work.

“I started to think about why people don’t pay attention to signs,” Ben said. “I decided that it was because they are always the same, reasonably innocuous and thus easily ignored. So if we had a sign that changed—countdown of days—and included important talking points, then people would more likely take the message to heart.”

On one side, the sign reads “Every voice matters, every vote counts,” while the reverse writes “Gore ’00 & Kerry ’04. Remember? Then take action because…American can’t afford four more years!!!”

Ben, an engineer at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, updates his Election Day countdown each night with his hand-made tiles. He estimates that up to 1,000 cars drive by the sign each day, given his home’s proximity to Coralville’s Coral Ridge Mall.

Along with the sign, Ben and Tricia have volunteered for Barack and helped as caucus organizers. They continue to make phone calls and canvass for the campaign, all in their personal effort to help Iowa turn blue on November 4th.

“Tricia will tell you that one of her major accomplishments for the campaign was to get her lifelong Republican parents to caucus and vote for Obama this year,” Ben said. “I am still working on my parents.”

For the past four days, we’ve been voting early in Iowa, and our supporters have been constantly talking about how easy it is! On the very first day of early voting, at 6:30 am, two of our best supporters, Judy and Cheryl, were first in line to early vote at the Polk County Auditor’s office. They really helped to highlight one of the best reasons to vote early—there aren’t any lines!

Obama will fight for women's rights
There are women working just as hard or even harder than men. Some of these women are single mothers, and I definitely think we should get equal opportunity and equal pay.
But Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin oppose the proposed law to give women the right to sue to achieve equal pay.
In contrast, Sen. Barack Obama proposes programs to give hard-working women like myself the opportunity to go to college, join the work force and retire with the dignity and respect.
Although I believe strongly in a woman's right to choose, I respect why other women might be strongly against it. But I also believe that personal religious preferences should not interfere with the law. Not everyone practices the same religion.
As an independent minded young woman who believes in voting for the best candidate, I urge voters in Iowa to join me in voting for Obama for president.

On the Road: Des Moines, Iowa
...When Jane first walked into an Obama field office during the pre-caucus period last September, she came to help address envelopes or generally help in what way she could. Slowly but surely, a skilled organizer named Caroline turned her into a precinct captain. Jane now manages 10 "block captains" who are responsible for their own slice of the precinct.

"I didn't know what a precinct captain was," said Jane. The first step was hosting a Barack Obama house party with her Republican husband Steve. Twenty of her neighbors, only about five of whom she'd met before, showed up. No donations were solicited, and the group met for an hour or so, asking questions of Jane, Steve, and a couple staff organizers. Though she was nervous at first and skeptical that such a party would have any effect, her organizer convinced her to give it a whirl.

The biggest impact was made, Jane said, by having each Obama supporter explain to the undecided but curious voters why they personally felt attracted to Obama's candidacy. Because Steve had been a longtime Republican and several Republicans were in the house, Jane talked about her excitement for a candidate willing to be fiscally responsible. There were no requests at the end of the party for commitments to vote for Obama, but Jane reported that when those houseguests attended an Obama foreign policy Q-and-A a week later, they came away completely sold.

Two or three times a day, Jane pipelines her newly-collected voter file info back to Obama's paid organizers in the West Des Moines office. In this way, the campaign stays on top of who's a supporter, who's undecided and why. Jane showed us her personalized notes to undecided voters who had requested information on a given issue. She and her block captains follow up with each voter in a personal way, and that's important, Jane says, because it's a following through of a promise: "We're representatives of Barack Obama, and when we say we'll get a voter information, we're giving our word."

Early voting began in Iowa yesterday morning, and we were there to capture the opening bell. Barack Obama's campaign has been putting an enormous emphasis on early voting and absentee voting by mail where applicable. The lower the burden on county clerks on Election Day, the shorter the lines, the fewer people who remain uncrossed off the GOTV lists for doorknocking and phonebanking reminders, then the greater efficiency with which campaigns can operate.

The morning after: a conversation with former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack

The Minnesota Independent had an opportunity to interview former Governor of Iowa Tom Vilsack earlier today and asked him about last night's debate between Barack and John McCain:

Below is Minnesota Independent's edited transcript of the interview:

Minnesota Independent: We had the first debate last night between Obama and McCain. What did you take away from it?
Tom Vilsack: First of all, this was a debate that Sen. McCain wanted to have first, focused on what he believe to be his strength — foreign policy. But I think Sen. Obama acquitted himself extraordinarily well. He showed great, comprehensive knowledge of the world and of the issues facing the United States. His presence on the stage was presidential. I think Sen. McCain at times appeared angry and a bit caustic.
MI There’s a poll out this morning showing Obama leading in Iowa by eight percentage points. He’s consistently had a comfortable lead there despite the fact that Bush won the state four years ago. What do you attribute that change to?
TV: It starts with Sen. Obama and the fact that he developed a close relationship with the people of Iowa as he campaigned. They got to know him, they were inspired by him, and they are attracted to the policies that he is articulating. Secondly, the state has trended more Democratic over the course of the last eight years. When I was elected governor the Republicans had a registration edge of 60,000. Today Democrats have a registration edge of 90,000. I think part of that is the new people that Sen. Obama is bringing into the party and into the political process every day.
MI: Nationwide we see a slightly different picture. Despite the best climate for Democrats since Watergate, Obama is clinging to a rather small lead. Why do you think he’s having trouble stretching out that lead given the political climate?
TV: I think America is still a divided country politically. So it doesn’t surprise me that the race is close nationally. I fully expect Sen. Obama to continue having this lead, and over the course of the next several weeks widening it, particularly as the focus of the debate is on the economy. It is very clear that Sen. Obama has a better grasp on the financial crisis this country faces and has a better short-term and long-term solution to that crisis.
MI: What role do you think race is playing in the presidential election?
TV: I think what it is doing is providing the country a wonderful opportunity to say to ourselves and to the rest of the world that we are finally prepared to live up to the ideal that was articulated by Martin Luther King 40 years ago, that indeed Americans are prepared and ready to judge someone not based on the color of their skin but on the content of their character.
MI: Are you convinced that it’s necessary to spend $700 billion to get us out of the current financial mess?
TV: I’m not convinced that anybody knows for sure what the right amount is. It may turn out that it’s less than that at the end of the day. It is fairly clear, though, that Main Street suffers when credit becomes hard to get. It’s fairly clear that we cannot afford not to respond to this crisis. Unfortunately Sen. McCain interjected himself into the process earlier this week. It was not helpful. We took a couple of steps back because of that, and I think people are trying to regroup this weekend. My hope is that by the end of this weekend there’s a deal. Then we’ll have to make sure it’s implemented properly and monitored properly.
MI: We’re going to have a debate featuring the vice presidential candidates on Thursday. What do you make of Gov. Sarah Palin?
TV: I fully expect her to do very well in this debate. She’s going to be well prepared. She’s going to be provided the answers and scripted in terms of what she can say. They’ve done a very good job of protecting her during the course of this campaign.
MI: But do you think she’s a qualified vice presidential candidate?
TV: I think it’s up to the people of the United States to make that decision. I will tell you that I have some serious concerns about the manner of the selection as it relates to Sen. McCain’s temperament and his decision-making process. Having myself gone through the vetting process in 2004, it’s hard for me to understand how a decision of that magnitude could be made in three or four days. Which apparently it was when John McCain was told by his handlers that he could not select a person that he wanted to select — which was either Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman — that that would not be acceptable to the extreme right wing of the party and he had to pick someone that was. He then spent a couple of days figuring that out. That’s not the kind of decision making that we should bring to the White House to decide some of the critical issues that face this country after eight disastrous years of the Bush administration.

Throughout the upcoming weeks, we are not only going to be working hard to ensure that all of our supporters are able to vote early, but we are also going to be pushing back on false and misleading attacks on Barack's record. Check out the short clipping below from FactCheck.org, a non-partisan truth-monitoring organization, which summarizes the NRA’s deceptive campaign against Barack:

A National Rifle Association advertising campaign distorts Obama's position on gun control beyond recognition.

The NRA is circulating printed material and running TV ads making unsubstantiated claims that Obama plans to ban use of firearms for home defense, ban possession and manufacture of handguns, close 90 percent of gun shops and ban hunting ammunition.

Much of what the NRA passes off as Obama's "10 Point Plan to 'Change' the Second Amendment" is actually contrary to what he has said throughout his campaign: that he "respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms" and "will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport, and use guns."

The NRA, however, simply dismisses Obama's stated position as "rhetoric" and substitutes its own interpretation of his record as a secret "plan." Said an NRA spokesman: "We believe our facts."

Perhaps so, but believing something doesn't make it so. And we find the NRA has cherry-picked, twisted and misrepresented Obama's record to come up with a bogus "plan."

Calling for Change

I have spent around five hours of my life calling people in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin about Barack Obama. I do not have a personal tally, but people, in general, seem to be pretty excited about the campaign. Some things that I have noticed:

Several people are upset that campaign merchandise (signs, stickers, etc.) are moving slowly. I had someone from Southern Illinois report that they had seen close to four signs in an 800 square mile area they had travelled. Yikes.

Voters in Iowa seem very favorable from Barack and I can tell by the age of the voters that many of these are college students.

Voters in Wisconsin seem split on Barack and John. The problem is that we need to pull every vote out of the rural areas so that the votes can overwhelm the ones from less liberal portions of the states. Even if we identify 10 voters out of 100 in rural Wisconsin, those 10 voters bring us closer to 50% plus on election day.

The script needs to be changed for these calls, though I am not sure of who to contact for something like that. It is long, wordy, and turns people off with its sometimes gimmicky start "Hi I am Kevin and I am calling on behalf of BO's campaign for change. It would be better if I were calling on behalf of BO.

We are thrilled to read about the admirable students at the UI who protested not only John McCain's war mind set but Palin's anti-women beliefs and policies. Keep it up, kids. We grannies aren't getting any younger, and we earnestly hope you'll continue our struggle for peace and justice after we're gone.

Protesters lauded

During a McCain/Palin speech, UI students Megan Felt, Hannah Rounds, Laura Kacere, Marni Steadham, Robin Berman, Dan Rathjen, David Goodner, Justin Feinstein, Brooke Bachelder, Lara Elborno, Naomi Prager, and Anthony Carter used their constitutional right of free speech to bring attention to the fact that this pair does not speak for many Americans. The students deserve our respect for their courage.

In recent days, I have felt frightened for our nation and worried that young people might not be paying attention (despite Barack Obama's great gains in getting them to become interested in politics). These students make me proud. I believe that Martin Luther King Jr and Gandhi taught this very tactic - nonviolently opposing oppression. As we said in the old days, "Right on."

They are telling Americans that young people will not accept four more years of more Bush/Cheney/Halliburton/Blackwater policies and no more killing of innocent people, bystanders, and children in either Iraq or Afghanistan, which is becoming an international scourge for the USA. They remind me of the best of the Vietnam War protesters, as well as the heroic actions of M.K. Gandhi himself, whose work I have studied for 30 years.

Valley High Students for Change

Yesterday in Des Moines, Valley High students kicked off their weekly canvass to local neighborhoods to encourage more young people to vote—and encourage all of our supporters to vote early. For the first 15 minutes before the kickoff, the student leaders talked with a few of the first-timers about what to expect at the doors and shared some of fun things they have seen over the last few weeks. Everyone was laughing, having a good time, and totally fired up to get out and start knocking on doors--- then the canvass officially kicked off with a chant of “4 on 3”—and if you aren’t familiar, that’s “1,2,3… 4!”

As they were leaving, I got a chance to talk to a few of the students about why they were getting involved in this election.

“This is my first canvass, and my first election to get involved. And even though I won’t be able to vote, I feel like everyone should be doing their part. I’m also here because I’m pro choice, and I was encouraged because my sister in law really likes Joe Biden”

“My parents are really political and I’ve been to the Harkin Steak Fry several times—and that has always been lots of fun… This is the first election that I’ll be able to vote in, but I was able to caucus for Barack—which really meant a lot to me…I feel like the world needs a new impression of America, and I know that Barack can do that, and he can also show the world our values and morals more so than any other candidate.”

Culver campaigns for Obama in Davenport
Iowa Gov. Chet Culver zeroed in Wednesday on John McCain’s opposition to ethanol subsidies as part of a critique of the Republican presidential candidate’s economic agenda at a campaign stop in Davenport.

Culver, a Democrat, said Iowa’s economy is outperforming the country’s in large part because the federal government has stimulated growth in the biofuels industry.

“The only reason our bio-economy is booming, certainly one of the reasons, is because of that very progressive federal policy,” he said.

The governor was joined by two aides to Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s campaign at a forum sponsored by DavenportOne.

“This is a choice for what is good for Iowa,” Culver said, also criticizing the Republican presidential nominee for opposing the 2007 Farm Bill.

Obama aides also tried to drill home the idea the Democrat’s tax plan would help middle income families more than McCain’s.

Obama’s plan would cut taxes for families making between about $37,000 and $66,000 by $1,042, according to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center. McCain’s plan would cut taxes for that family by $319, the center says.
Warnstadt: McCain doesn't support wind, ethanol
State Sen. Steve Warnstadt, D-Sioux City, wants Iowans to imagine what the state would be like without wind farms and ethanol plants.

Warnstadt said that's what Iowa would be like if Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential candidate, had gotten his way during the 26 years he served in the U.S. Congress.

"He (McCain) has consistently opposed any ethanol incentives and mandates, which have been responsible for 47,000 Iowa jobs in the ethanol industry," Warnstadt said during a Wednesday press conference ahead of a McCain visit to Iowa today. "He has voted against the renewable tax credits, which the utility industry says is critical for them to be able to put up wind turbines. So, frankly his voting record is one that has been very much against renewables, both ethanol and wind. I think that's bad for Iowa and I think that's bad for the country."

He said it's critical to provide people with the additional money to help pay for gas, but at the same time take a look at energy options that are available to us right now.

Obama is everything the Democrats have been waiting for, and we're all right to feel empowered, enthused, and confident about our candidate. BUT WE ABSOLUTELY, IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM, HAVE THE RIGHT TO BELIEVE HE WILL ACTUALLY MAKE IT INTO OFFICE. You think the average American has had enough of Bush's lies? Well, you're lying to yourself.

Just like Gore and Kerry before him, Obama is having to battle the deception and manipulation that the Republican party exerts over the American people. Moreover, obstacles like voter caging http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caging_list, voting location inaccessibility, and voter count manipulations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_election_recount will make it even more difficult for Obama to get elected.

Like the 2000 and 2004 elections preceding it, this presidency will be decided by a narrow margin. In order to make sure Obama not only gets the votes he needs to legally win, but gets enough votes to beat the "Republican spread," we HAVE to get involved. There is no exception. If we don't, we WILL NOT win.

Today in Iowa City, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius held several events to talk about the importance of this election, and how critical it is that Barack becomes our next president.

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius stopped by the Iowa City Public Library this morning with one topic in mind: Barack Obama.

Speaking to a crowd of over 200, Sebelius linked Republican challenger John McCain's policies with President George W. Bush's unpopularity, while stressing the policy differences between the Illinois senator and McCain.

"If, indeed, you feel like you are - as Ronald Reagan said - better off personally than you were eight years ago, that your family is better off than it was eight years ago, your state and country is better off than eight years ago - then John McCain is your guy," Sebelius said to the cheering crowd.

"But if we truly believe we need to change direction in this country and embrace a new philosophy … then we need a change," she said. "We don't need somebody who just talks about change. We need a change in direction and a change in policy."

Sebelius touted Obama's tax, healthcare, and economic policies as necessary changes, emphasizing the need for a "fair and progressive tax policy," one that aids the middle class, rather than the richest one percent of Americans.

The Kansas governor also dismissed the notion that McCain is a party-bucker, citing that the Arizona senator would continue many of Bush's policies.

"John McCain the maverick has now become the sidekick," Sebelius said.

Perspectives on Obama Health care and how it would benefit Us!

The movement behind Barack Obama is undeniable a movement that will last thru history in a political campaign like no other. He has captured the heart and the vote of millions of people not only American citizens but also citizens across the globe. including me a Latino college student woman. I believe that what makes Obama so special is not his so called “celebrity status” as it has been alleged by the McCain campaign but one must agree that the man behind the cameras senator Obama has the charisma and the self determination to break barriers across stereotypes, race, cultural and socioeconomic typecast. I have participated in three roundtable/ forums; two with senator Obama and one with Michelle Obama Senator Biden and other governors, the last one in Denver at the DNC the same day I delivered a prime time speech I wrote in which I talked about a dysfunctional system on social welfare in which millions of Americans are stock and helpless waiting for some relief to better themselves and right the waves.

No one, not I like to be solely dependent on the system, if you are like me you wish to be self sufficient hold a steady good paying job, access to a descent non discriminatory and more affordable health care plan and perhaps obtain higher education to better your life. Currently we have a system that does not have the necessary funds to operate or to allocate to programs. The state legislators have to appropriate money to fund more waivers slots for programs such as the Ill and Handicapped waiver. We have a system that tells us we have to be patient while bills go thru legislations and thru congress but of course they never pass, and if they do there is never enough money but somehow the Feds always managed to come up with billions of dollars to fund an unwarranted war, to aid foreign countries such as Georgia and bring our nation to a post cold-war up-roar further draining our financial resources and breaking American families with more deployment of our troops.

In Obama I see hope, commitment and good judgment to do what’s right; this includes keeping us American safe from any threat to our national security, we have this right under our constitution. Obama understands the real need of people like me who struggle on a daily basis to achieve the American dream. I may never be rich because I really don’t think realistically speaking I will make five million dollars a year like McCain stated, but I know that spiritually I am already rich and so are most of us. The issues Many Americans care about, and is not surprising is the Economy this include the rate of inflation, gas prices, the housing/mortgage crisis. We care about education from Kindergarten to Higher education. Many of us are lucky if we graduate from high school let alone college. We are the richest, greatest country in this world yet we are constantly outperformed by other countries in both education and healthcare. Senator Obama understands this and much more, he has seen and experience poverty first hand, he watched his mother died and cried in frustration because of inadequate health care. They too ate with food stamps at some point. I want a president I can relate to, I want a president that can improve our image to the world be a thru diplomat without jeopardizing our well being while promoting and enforcing a social reform that will help us succeed and not so much relied on our government but use it when we need it not indefinitely.

If Americans make the right decision this time around under president Obama we will see the full implementation of the American with Disability ACT (ADA) which prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment. By restoring the Americans with Disabilities Act which the Supreme Court has strictly constrained scarcely defining what it means to have a disability. As a result, lower courts have held that people with epilepsy, diabetes, heart disease and cancer can be fired from their jobs. Obama sturdily supports Senator Tom Harkin’s ADA Restoration Act, which would Overturn the Supreme Court decisions that limit the ADA’s coverage on disabilities; Obama as president wants and will sign the restoration of the ADA into law.

Obama supports Early Learning Challenge Grants and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Originally Congress promised to shoulder off 40 percent of the excess cost of educating the disabled Obama wants to expand these programs by fully funding them to serve more children with disabilities. Currently the Federal Government is providing less than half of what was promised at currently 17%.

Obama wants to assure that Workers with Disabilities and Family Caregivers (such as me) get the flexibility at work they need by expanding The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Lastly in the state of Iowa alone where the elderly and disabled population is higher than in many other states we need programs to better accommodate our aging and disabled population, and provide for a decent dignifying lifestyle by keeping them close to home and fully integrating them into society to close the gap, and risk for isolation. No one wants to died Isolated forgotten, let’s not do this to them. The handicap waiver in the state of Iowa are the worst, the waiting list is of about 16 month. The Ill and handicapped waiver as of 08/05/2008 have 1,845 disabled individuals on its waiting list awaiting for the so needed relief such program will provide to them and their family. So my question is where do state legislators get the money to fund this programs and once they do get the money how often to the federal government match it? I propose that the State Disability Board make waivers more friendly so that Social Worker and the clients understand how the system work and perhaps make it more practical to cut thru years of bureaucracy. Barack Obama understands this. I have never heard or read anything from the McCain campaign to focus or even briefly mentions anything that would benefit this forgotten segment of society. I guess they are not as deserving since they can’t really financially benefit this capitalistic society where it seems that Darwinism prevails with it survival of the fittest theory.

Jill Biden Travels Across Iowa

This weekend here in Iowa, Dr. Jill Biden traveled across the state to meet with hundreds of local residents to talk about Barack and Joe and the important work that local activists must do in these upcoming weeks.

During a stop in Mason City, Dr. Biden joined with Christine Vilsack and a dozen lifelong teachers to discuss education policy and our need to strengthen communities by investing in education. As an educator for most of her adult life, Dr. Biden is extremely comfortable talking about education, and shared an all-too common problem.

During one of her classes, Dr. Biden had a student who was smart, studious, and motivated, yet didn’t have enough money to purchase books for the semester. The teachers in the discussion ignited a spirited discussion about the lack of funding for things like books, and the importance of making education one of our top priorities.

One of the teachers also brought up the fact that Barack’s very first bill he introduced in the Senate sought to increase the maximum Pell Grant award to $5,100, and stressed that it was one of the reasons she was supporting our campaign for change.

After leaving the education discussion, Dr. Biden stopped by several organizing meetings to fire up local supporters and then stopped at a local coffee house, veterans home, and fire station. It seemed like everywhere she stopped, or even when just walking from an event, someone knew her. That was probably because it was somewhat of a homecoming, because Jill and her sister Valerie, who was also on the trip, used to live in Waterloo!

One of the most inspirational moments of the trip was at Jill’s final event in Dubuque, where hundreds of Joe’s supporters from the caucuses came out to show their support. After her speech the event seemed to turn into a big family reunion. Hugs and friendly conversations not only followed Dr. Biden, but supporters who hadn’t seen each other since the caucuses were also getting back in touch.

Obama is best to aid Midlands interests

The conventions are over. Both political parties have nominated individuals with compelling life stories. Both understand that something is out of kilter in Washington and that America’s standing in the world has diminished politically and economically over the last decade. Each is competing for the mantle of change.
As one who served 30 years as a Republican in Congress and, prior to that, 5 years in the Executive branch, principally as a Foreign Service Officer, I have for the first time decided to endorse a Democratic candidate for President.
I have the deepest respect for the principles and heritage of the Republican Party. But the question for many traditional Republicans is whether today’s party resembles that of our parents, of the views of leaders like Robert Taft or Dwight Eisenhower, of Barry Goldwater or Nelson Rockefeller, let alone of the progressive tradition of our great-great grandparents, the abolitionists and suffragettes.
The party that once emphasized individual rights has gravitated in recent years toward regulating values. The party of military responsibility has taken us to war with a country that did not attack us. The party historically anchored in fiscal restraint has nearly doubled the national debt, squandering our precious resources in an undisciplined and unprecedented effort to finance a war with tax cuts.
In 25 years in Congress, John McCain has demonstrated what he validly describes as a maverick personality, but on the key issues of the day – the war in Iraq, tax accommodation for the big and powerful, social policy – both his policies and personal approach to decision-making represent unflinching continuity with the current Administration.

Okay, its down to fifty something more days til theOparty and maybe its time to bring some sanity into the political picture. Forget the issues, the heroics, the experience, the beauty, the black or the white of the race.

My suggestion is...Let's bring the two opposing "STARS" together on November 4th, in my hometown of Mount Vernon Iowa and let's decide the WINNER over a 'GREASED PIG CONTEST' ...the winner takes ALL!

If my small Iowa community sells ring side tickets and national television rights to the event, I am hoping we could make enough to create our community center (mtvernonusa.us)and offer FREE education to everyone on the planet via the World Wide Web and the information age folks. We can teach everyone the art of the conceptual age now unfolding and teach every one the fine art of preventive health care for life, for everyone on the planet. Then we can fully, totally and completely open the doors to the integral age and see that everyone on the planet is fully, totally and completely employed and engaged in being the individual unique miraculous genius we were born as... to be our passionate play, our heart on fire. Maybe we could teach the very simple easy lessons of peace, love and freedom which could save the planet countless trillions of dollars in wastefull pork spending and save hundreds of thousancs of lives in the process. And maybe while everyone is 'tuning' in maybe we could share the art of farming so that everyone on the planet can be free to grow their own gardens and provide enough food to feed oneself and the world. Maybe during the "greased pig contest' we will all see the absolute hilarious humor in our black and white systems of politics and be enlightened to co-creating and co-designing a more perfect union based on the ultimate integral concepts of SANITY combined with the art of politics.

Barack Obama Reaffirms Commitment to Renewable Fuels Standard

Des Moines, Iowa – Yesterday, during a conference call with the National Farmers Union, Senator Barack Obama reaffirmed his commitment to Iowa biofuels and the Renewable Fuels Standard.

According to Senator Obama: “I know one of the key messages you are bringing to Washington this week with you is the importance of investing in renewable energies, that's a priority we share. And I've long supported the renewable fuel standard. I am strongly committed to advanced biofuels as a key component to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. And at the same time, and many of you know, investing in renewable fuels also injects millions of dollars of capital in the rural economy and helps farmers with profitability, it creates jobs. So this is something that I am going to keep on fighting for as President.”

Senator John McCain continues to oppose the Renewable Fuels Standard and ethanol. In fact, McCain’s energy plan doesn’t even include renewable fuels. The biofuels industry has helped create 96,000 jobs throughout Iowa.

Barack understands the importance of, and has been a consistent supporter of biofuels. A striking lawn display

Bellevue couple's decorating rolls into politics

BELLEVUE, Iowa -- How can you tell when the presidential campaign is in full swing? When preferential campaign signs start popping up everywhere -- on bumpers and windows, on lapels and banners and, of course, on bowling balls.

Yep, a Bellevue couple trumpets its support for Barack Obama with the presidential candidate's name emblazoned on a bowling ball in their front yard. Actually, because Jerry and Gayle Walsh are both Irish, they've taken some liberties with the Democrat's name, spelling it "O'Bama."

"We're voting for the Irishman," said Gayle, 64, laughing. The couple owned an Irish pub in Chicago before retiring to Bellevue.

The Obama ball is the latest addition to the Walshes' garden, which sports dozens of colorful standard bowling balls alongside lawn bowling balls and whimsical objects such as statuary, farm machinery parts, heat register grates and other rusted metal paraphernalia. The two frequent flea markets, garage sales and auctions to find unusual and peculiar accoutrements to surround their house on Second Street.

Both Jerry and Gayle tend their garden, he in one of the 200 or so Hawaiian shirts he wears everywhere.

The Walshes also take their politics to the streets. They wear Obama pins to start polite political discussions and have yard signs showing their support for the Democratic candidate. Jerry, 70, knows exactly the number of days until the end of the current administration, when they hope Obama will take over, although they predict a very close election.

Gayle might create another political bowling ball, to sit on a pedestal a bit lower than O'Bama's.

It would say, "O'Biden."

Democrats and the Hard Middle

Historically Democrats have always had trouble during the early fall months... The leads they aspired to, that once looked possible, have slowly closed as the Republican Convention wraps up and now their democratic presidental campaigns, just seem to run out of steam...

It happened to Carter; it happened to Mondale; it happened to Dukakas; it happened to Clinton; it happened to Clinton during his second term; it happened to Gore; it happened to Kerry; and we should certainly expect it to happen to Obama-Biden....

I will be blunt here. The Democrats peak at the cnnvention...where as Republicans who have always struggled since Iowa, finally just get it together at the convention... There is little you as a Democrat can do. You can visit a town, say the same things, smile and wave alot, try wearing sweaters, slamming beers, and the tiny little tricks the marketing advisers try to reccomend you follow, but against hard hitting Republicans, you just look stale...And your tricks look fake. Hell, we heard the same damn message for 19 whole months now... It's boring.

Looking back over the historical litany above, there is one exception that stands out.... That was Clinton in 92. His campaign was stuck in the doldrums until it got some unexpected help from Ross Perot.... Suddenly we were discussing the budget.... Other things were mentioned, like NAFTA and it's gian sucking sound...., but the budget captured the imagination of America... Clinton seized on that topic, and out performed Herbert Walker, winning the election while still giving up 20% of the vote to Perot....

I remember Clinton rolling into my town just days before the 92's General.. He said the right things, but it was the fact that we believed he would tackle the deficit, we really believed it then, that gave him stature...

This week's convention tipped the Republican's hand... They will drive a rural/ urban split... Pitting the Toby Keith crowd against those loving the Dixie Chicks... Those working with their hands, against those making their living with their ideas....

Face it, Democrats are vulnerable on that front... Those in charge of advising the candidates, know little of this broad segment of rural America... That vast segment is the Republican's target and now with Sarah Palin, they have a real shot at winning it.... a real shot...

So how do Barack and Joe combat this weakness they seems to posess all Democrats? (In truth, McCain has it also)? Please, don't go on a fake hunting trip, that opens you to ridicule...(like riding in a tank)....

Let's go back to Iowa.... What made candidates Barack and Joe Biden both successful in that rural community? You were both there... you know what you did right, and by now, you ceretainly know what you should have done better.... That is who you need to become again... Forget the pundits call to stay on message... everyone who takes the day off to come see you, already has seen your debates, already has read your news stories, they came to see you...

Here's a fake address of what I would recommend, say in Oklahoma.... "Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm not going to lie to you... I'm not much of a cowboy, a farmer, or an oilman... I live in a bubble... a bubble they call Washington....

Most of you will no doubt vote for my opponent... If that is what is in your heart, then its ok...I do understand and won't hold it against you... But there are those who have crunched the numbers and told me that I and Joe have a good chance of running this country. As soon as the election is over, I start that job...in fact without the pay until January 20th (smile).... I hope to become commander in chief of the United States.... Obviously, Oklahoma is a part ot that great country, the United States of America.....

I will need to represent you to the best of my ability... That means I need to understand you... What I propose is not giving you a great speech, one you will forget tomorrow because it says so little.... What I propose to you is giving you something more important... Time.. time to ask the next president of the United States (smile) I hope... those questions that are really on your mind...

I don't know. You may not like my answers, and that's ok... But at the end of our conversations, you will know where I stand... And the motivation behind as to why I stand for that....

So lets get started.... First of all, how is the economy going in this town... How are you surviving the housing bubble burst, How many of you are out of work... Are jobs hard to find... And what could I do, as the next president of the United States, to make your lives better....Yes you ...you go first.......

Having watched you, I know both of you listen very well.... As you get hooked back into rural America's values, just as you both did in Iowa, you automatically protect your flank form the gun toting, hip swinging, political version of Paris Hilton... (Joe is so lucky. I wish I was debating her....)

You don't win rural America by persuasive speeches... You win rural America by letting them know you are an ok guy after all. They've all heard the horror stories, they get 5 emails about you each day.....They need to leave reassured 1) that you really care about them, and 2) that their life will go on if you get elected... just as it was, if not perhaps a tiny bit better....

In todays world, what goes on in Oklahoma, instantly gets back to rural Pennsylvania, rural Virginia, rural Colorado, as well as the rural towns across all 50 states....

Forget the bubble..Forget the politicos,.. Forget the television bits....

Its all about people...Its all... about people....In the end, bubbles, politicos, and televisions sets won't step into a voting booth... People will....

I shudder to think of this country again choosing the wrong person to lead, a Republican,... simply because rural America was not comfortable enough with the "right" person to lead this nation.....

Like millions of Americans last week, I was inspired and reenergized by Senator Obama’s acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination.

I didn’t watch the event in Denver, but instead with over 100 Obama supporters at a Convention watch party in North Liberty, Iowa.

Here is a video I put together of the event. In it, you’ll see a diverse set of Iowans expressing what draws them to Senator Obama.

As you can tell, these folks are fired up and ready to sprint all the way to November 4th.

But they can’t do it alone. All over Iowa, Barack Obama’s Campaign for Change needs energetic supporters to help turn excitement into votes. Energetic supporters like you.

Whether you are a seasoned political volunteer, or if this your first campaign to get involved, we have a role for you in this important battleground state. Your time, I assure you, is this campaign’s most valuable resource.

Senator Biden to return to Iowa on Monday

First Iowa Stop Since Becoming the Democratic Nominee for Vice President

Des Moines, Iowa - Today, Obama for America announces Senator Joe Biden will hold an event in Des Moines on Monday, September 8th, 2008, to discuss strengthening the American economy. This will be Senator Biden’s first return trip to Iowa since the caucuses, and his first trip since becoming the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States.

“Iowans around the state are incredibly enthusiastic to welcome Joe Biden back to Iowa, this time as the next Vice President of the United States,” said Jackie Norris, Iowa state director for Senator Obama’s presidential campaign. “Iowans want an economy that works for them, not just the wealthy special interests. On Monday, Senator Biden will come to Des Moines to discuss the Obama-Biden plan to give tax cuts to middle class families and turn our economy around.”

My Mile-High Experience

I was one of the 80,000-plus supporters filling the Invesco “Mile-High” Stadium in Denver last Thursday. I felt more than a mile high in the vertigo-inspiring upper east section where I sat—one more example of moving beyond my comfort zone during this campaign! The event also marks the first time in my adult life that I have waved an American flag. And it didn’t even feel that odd—in fact, it felt downright joyful! It was an action of hope and belief and persistence. It was an acknowledgment of love of this country’s ideals and even love of the messy process we use to elect our leaders.

I drove out to Colorado on Wednesday with Susan, another precinct captain here in Des Moines whom I met walking in last year’s Iowa State Fair parade with the Obama contingent. Because I couldn’t fathom going all the way to Colorado and not being in the mountains, we drove straight to Estes Park. Thursday morning we arose early and entered Rocky Mountain National Park before 6:30 a.m. We bundled up and quickly hiked up to Dream Lake from the Bear Lake trailhead. Despite having hiked this trail many, many times, it never fails to inspire awe with its views of Longs Peak, sweet-smelling pine and aspen forest, cobalt sky, rushing stream, and today, gusty winds creating a white-capped lake below rugged Hallett Peak. We took a few photos, struggling at times to stay upright in the wind, then made our way back down. It was a brief mountain experience, but better than nothing, and was an excellent way to follow a long day of driving and to start what we hoped would be an exciting day in Denver. It was also a reminder of the need to elect someone who will protect such land from exploitation and short-sightedness!

From the road in Boulder, I called my sister-in-law, Carol, in Denver. She and my brother-in-law graciously agreed to put us up for the night in their Denver condo. Carol and her mom, Diane, were already on their way to the Iowa Democratic Party convention headquarters in the Marriott Courtyard downtown. After Susan and I had reached downtown Denver, Carol called and said she could pick up all four tickets and she just needed contact information from us to activate the tickets. After securing our credentials, they met us to lead us to the condo. I kind of regret that we didn’t stop at the Iowa HQ just to see it, but it was certainly more convenient to have Carol take care of it. I had hoped that Carol would also be able to attend that night (she insisted her mom take our fourth ticket), but her own request didn’t result in a ticket. Carol’s hospitality and support were so appreciated!

Parallel Politics

A LITTLE less than a year ago there was an event in Indianola, Iowa, attended by all the major Democratic candidates for president. They were seated together on a platform in a large, rolling field ordinarily used for balloon launchings. One by one the candidates stood and spoke to a crowd estimated at 12,000 people. It was a glorious September day, there were big white tents where barbecue was being served and there were campaign signs and paraphernalia in Fourth of July colors everywhere. It was a scene that would be recognizable anywhere on earth and at any time in the history of the United States as a moment in the life of democracy.

Iowans are a practiced, patient and attentive audience. That there is a kind of decorum observed on occasions like this one is seldom noticed because it is seldom departed from. That day, however, after Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton had finished speaking her supporters walked out. Their numbers were impressive, as were the discipline and coordination that seemed to be reflected in their leaving as a body before Senators Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Christopher J. Dodd and Gov. Bill Richardson had spoken.

It was heartening for me to stand in an open field on a late summer day and hear important public figures talk thoughtfully and earnestly about issues of war and peace, about the life and soul of the country that has been entrusted to all of us. There was only the political theater of that mass departure to cast a shadow. It was the intrusion of another idiom, an assertion that what passed between these speakers and their audience was beside the point, that elections were determined elsewhere and in other terms.

In Iowa it is sometimes possible to forget how much has intervened between the American people and those who, in theory, represent them. The Clinton campaign came late into Iowa and never reconciled itself to the conditions that prevail here. The campaign was a reluctant visitor adapted to life in another world, a world in which the aura of virtual incumbency would avail more than would, let us say, reflection on the stresses on constitutional order that have resulted from the policies of the current administration.

That other world has now fully asserted its strange power. Its population is no doubt smaller than the attendance at an average Obama rally, yet it decides what matters — what gaffes, what tiffs, what lapses, what successes or failures at fund-raising. Politics, in any positive sense the word has ever had, clearly does not matter by this reckoning. The appeals to thought that are made a thousand times in the course of any campaign do not matter. The conversation a democracy must have with itself is not worth its time or attention, being either cynical or naïve. I am suggesting nothing worse than contempt for the general population.

Then again, perhaps there is nothing worse.

Taking Action Brings Change

This weekend is the much anticipated, and extremely important Weekend of Action, where across Iowa, hundreds of supporters are going out today and on Monday to talk about Barack and Joe’s campaign to change Washington. We can’t stress enough the importance of these next two days, because they are going to play a big role in the organization we are building in this final push towards November 4th.

In order for our campaign to be successful at not only winning in November, but also at changing the ways of Washington, we must continue our organizing beyond this election. Our work, and the work of the grassroots networks across the country is helping to build an infrastructure that can help keep the pressure on Washington.

There are two days left in the Weekend of Action , and we need you to stand up now to get involved. As a former community organizer, Barack understands that a weekend of action must lead to a renewed sense of urgency to stay involved and continue building our grassroots relationships. Check out this video about a program Barack ran called “Project Vote”— Barack talks clearly about the key to bringing change and shows that by getting involved, you can make the difference.

Convention update from day 1-Sunday

So I'm here @the Democratic National Convention. My husband and I traveled by Amtrak from IA, left Sat. at 7CST. Got here at 9MST the next morn. It was a great trip. We met 2 delegates from IL one who is running for Mayor in Peoria. We also made friends w a co counsel for the FEC. Upon arriving we took free bus ride to hotel. Right in the heart of down town Denver. After a few probe checking in we got to out room,freshened up and started with the first "official" event. Friends of New Orleans hosted event in grand ballroom at Colorado convention center,where the minority caucus's meet during the day. It was open bar and food food and more food. We had gumbo, shrimp romuloude ( not spelled right) and much more. The real party started when a mini Mardi Gras parade passed through, complete with costumes and horns, bongos and other instruments. After staying there for 90 min or so we headed the 10 or so blocks to the Celtic Tavern where Sen. Harkin was hosting his welcome delegate reception. As before drinks and food flowed freely. Adam and I stayed for hr or so and then left to met up w my cousin a volunteer w the NY delegation. We hit the Coyote Ugly. True to form before even being offered a drink the female bartenders dancing on the bar singing and clogging shouted for me to join them, which I had to decline. We stayed for bit then made friends w a pedi cab driver (bicycle driving a bench seat) outside and got his # for a ride later in the week.

On the Road Again--- Heartland Change Tour Continues

The Heartland Change tour continues in Iowa! Some of you might remember the trips through Missouri—but if you haven’t seen them yet, check out some of these pictures from the tour across the Show Me State!

In our first two days of travels across Iowa we’ve seen beautiful weather and talked to dozens of Iowans about Barack’s plan to provide real leadership for Rural America. Today, the rural RV will be traveling through Jefferson, Carroll, Wall Lake, Lake City, and Coon Rapids—the weather might be a little dreary- but keep your eye out—you can’t miss us!

Now, more than ever, our nation needs a strong leader on the issues that affect our rural communities. Agriculture and rural communities stand at a crossroads. The increased demand for renewable energy and increased interest in greening our economy holds tremendous promise for job creation and new opportunities for rural communities and the agriculture sector. At the same time, rural families face challenges created by irresponsible political decisions made in recent years: ignoring the need to upgrade critical infrastructure, failing to tackle rising health care costs, and losing the battle to enact comprehensive immigration reform.
