Students for Obama Making a Difference

The event has started with a performance by the Lincoln High school Marching Band. People are still lined up down the streets trying to get in, and their music is helping to keep everyone in high spirits.

Throughout this election, we’ve seen something special from young people getting involved—even if they are too young to vote. Just a few minutes ago, Secretary of State Michael A. Mauro released the results of the 2008 Iowa Student Mock Election. This year was a record breaking turnout with a total of 56,000 students taking part—and Barack Obama won the Election with 58% of the vote!

Now these Mock Election results won’t directly translate into turning Iowa blue, but we’ve seen thousands of Iowa students, in High school and College, put in tens of thousands of volunteer hours. It’s these efforts that are going to ensure our success on Election Day, and we need everyone out there signing up to get involved. Click here to help these students bring the change we need.

The event is heating up… more pictures coming soon.

Des Moines Volunteer Discusses Veterans Benefits

If you come into our Des Moines, Iowa office, something you are going to immediately notice is the beautiful artwork covering our walls and the stenciled drawings of work in progress. One of our best volunteers, Steve, has been working day after day, painting and making sure our office is ready to go-- but this isn’t the first we’ve seen of him. Steve was also one of the first volunteers into our Des Moines office when we hit the ground to prepare for the caucuses, and he has been a staple ever since.

I asked Steve about how he first got involved and about his support for Barack.

“My father was on the ground on D-day and lost his hearing. He was initially denied benefits, and continued to re-apply every 10 years, but without any success. He missed hearing my youth sermon, missed hearing my name read at graduation, and missed his grandson saying grandpa. One time I even overheard my 10 year-old son say, ‘don’t ask grandpa, he doesn’t listen.’ It was difficult, but everything changed when my dad got his benefits in 2006, and his hearing aid.

That brings me to the crux of my story-- I first heard about Barack because he helped re-open my dad’s case-file and ended his struggle with the Veterans Administration. Barack made a big impact on our family, but he also helped thousands of disabled veterans across Illinois who were denied benefits. In short, I was already a supporter even before he announced he was running for president.”

Steve is a teacher here in Des Moines, and his personal story parallels Barack’s in so many ways. They are both passionate advocates for education and ensuring that we give our children every opportunity that was available to ourselves, and then some. They were both raised by World War II veterans and they both understand that veterans benefits are not about some policy made in Washington, but about the people who are struggling for the recognition and respect they deserve. By seeing firsthand how legislation affects neighborhoods, how it affects families, and how many of these people have been fighting for decades, it instills a sense of urgency for real change.

Following reports that veterans in Illinois were receiving less in disability benefits than those nearly anywhere else in the country, Barack led efforts to correct the problems that created these disparities. As a result of his efforts, the VA opened an investigation into the matter and agreed to re-examine the claims of veterans who felt they had been treated unfairly. Senator Obama worked with Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) to force the VA to notify traditionally underserved veterans in Illinois, Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey and Ohio, with a total of 326,000 letters, about their right to seek a review of their past claims.

After this effort, a significant numbers of veterans ended up getting the benefits they deserve, including Steve’s father.

Thousands of veterans and the family members of veterans have been supporting and volunteering for Barack, and we encourage you to read about Barack’s work on the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee.
Intelligence trumps party affiliation in this endorsement

Posted early Easter morning at State.com, Doug Kmiec not only speaks highly and intelligently about the breadth and depth of Sen. Obama's skill set, he speaks to the great challenge of the day -- how we as a nation must turn our face from the fear-mongering that would cloud our judgment as we take on those who would do our country harm in the organized, Islamic fundamentalist movements we know as "Jihads".

Take a look as one of the most elequently written endorsements I've read to date - here.

Professor Kmiec has stepped up and recognized how important it is for our nation to choose not only someone who is strong and patriotic, as both Senator Obama and John McCain would be, but someone who sees the world through a different lens than George W. Bush. I personally think John McCain is John McBush -- very seldom would we see dramatically differenct actions from John McCain than what GW Bush would take. He's not in lock step with GW, but Barack Obama has a whole different perspective on the world -- it's not someplace to be conquered and the populations sequestered and controlled such that all the hatred is suppressed through the power of our military.

Instead, the world is a place where people can unite around common causes, to stand up for what is right, and what is just. Mortgaging the future of our children and grandchildren through tax cuts whose benefit was 52% to the richest 1% is not moral, or just.

It's time to turn the page. Thank you, Professor Doug Kmiec for your reasoned approach and comments regarding why you are standing for change with the Obama for America campaign.

Andrew Lietzow - Des Moines, IA - DSM #49 - Volunteer Precinct Co-Captain for Obama for America

So.. I was in Iowa and..

So.. I decided around.. New Years Eve.. that I was really going to make the trip to Des Moines. I got my college roommate on board to drive. I got another friend to join us. And we hit the road from Racine, Wisconsin on Thursday morning.

We had some serious car trouble on the way (we probably did about $1000 worth of damage to my friend's car), and we got lost a couple times.. but we made it to Obama HQ at about 3:30 in the afternoon on Caucus day. I was amazed at the organization. The whole room was buzzing with activity, and I don't think anyone there was over age 30.

Well, we sat out on the street for a few hours, waving signs for Obama and passing out literature to Iowans. It was cold as hell, but it would all be worthwhile if Obama won the state. After the doors closed on the caucuses we grabbed some dinner at a very nice Des Moines steakhouse whose name escapes me at the moment.

We arrived at the HiVee Center (site of Obama's scheduled speech) around 7:45. We did not know that we would be some of the first non-journalists to arrive. As we watched the results come in, we were approached by several journalists, one I recall was from the Des Moines Register and another was from the Chicago Tribune. I later learned that our picture was put up on the DMR webpage, but that they got my friend's name wrong. My name was right though. Haha.

We held our position (front and center in front of Obama's podium) as others began filing in. The room filled rapidly. Around 8:45 or 9:00 (I think) they changed over to MSNBC, where Chris Mathews was ready to declare Obama the winner. The room erupted. Everyone watched to see how close the final count would be. Everyone was ecstatic knowing that we'd be witnessing a victory speech. Most likely one of the great turning points in this campaign. Possibly one of the great turning points in American history.

We got some great pictures. But more importantly. I got to shake Obama's hand! I missed my opportunity in Madison, a few months back. I got close but not close enough. In Des Moines I shook his hand and I spoke to him. It was one of the greatest moments of my life. He may not have heard me over the crowd noise. He may not remember me (wearing the gold Green Bay Packers hat). But that was amazing for me.

I'm confident Obama is going to take New Hampshire. And the White House. When I saw the results of the 2006 midterms and saw the field of candidates for 2008.. I had a feeling that it was going to be one of the greatest campaign seasons that we'd ever witness. I have not been disappointed.

Iowa Rep. Wayne Ford endorses Barack

Today, Iowa state Rep. Wayne Ford announced his support of Senator Obama. Rep. Ford's endorsement is Senator Obama's 20th from Iowa legislators - more than any other Democratic candidate for president. This also means that every member of Iowa's Legislative Black Caucus supports Senator Obama. Rep. Ford represents District 65 in Des Moines.

Here's what Rep. Ford said this morning in announcing his support:

Barack’s ability to win the support of independents and Republicans means he’ll both be our party’s strongest general election candidate and a President who can successfully expand economic opportunity and access to affordable housing for every American – including those who live in urban communities. I am glad that Sen. Obama has invited me to be a part of his team as he looks at implementing his national urban agenda. This endorsement isn’t just about my name. I intend to spend the next 11 days working to ensure that Barack Obama makes a strong showing on caucus night in Iowa and in the primaries that follow across the country.

Senator Obama was honored to receive Rep. Ford's endorsement and said this:

I am grateful to Representative Ford for signing on to our campaign and adding his support and his voice to our team in Iowa. Representative Ford has been leading the fight against rising incarceration and high school drop-out rates for years, and I'm glad he's agreed to be a leader for our campaign. We're building a statewide movement of Iowans from every corner of the state who are ready to put the divisive politics of the past behind us and bring to Washington the kind of change we can believe in.

Rep. Ford has received national acclaim for the Brown & Black Presidential Forum, the oldest Presidential debate focused on minority issues, which he co-founded and has co-chaired since 1984.

Including Rep. Ford, Senator Obama has received a total of 20 endorsements from Iowa state legislators. Here's the full list:

Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad

Rep. Deborah Berry

Sen. Joe Bolkcom

Sen. Bob Dvorsky

Rep. Wayne Ford

Rep. Elesha Gayman

Sen. Bill Heckroth

Rep. David Jacoby

Rep. Pam Jochum

Rep. Helen Miller

Sen. Rich Olive

Rep. Donovan Olson

Rep. Tyler Olson

Rep. Janet Petersen

Rep. Brian Quirk

Sen. Tom Rielly

Rep. Paul Shomshor

Rep. Mark Smith

Sen. Steve Warnstadt

Sen. Frank Wood

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald and former Iowa Democratic Party Chair Gordon Fischer have also endorsed Senator Obama's campaign for change.

Ice Storm in Iowa

We woke up this morning to see that a lovely winter ice storm had fallen on the Des Moines area. I had about an inch of ice covering the windows of my car.

Michelle Obama's events today have been postponed because of the weather. We'll be sure to keep you updated on her next trip - it'll be soon!

Here are a couple pictures from this morning.

Do you have any interesting pictures of the ice storm?
Local Iowa News

When it became clear that the Red Sox were in the World Series (and by 'became clear' I mean, as soon as I got home from game 7 of the ALCS championship), I started watching Colorado news sources like a hawk, hoping to find a way to get tickets to game 4. That didn't end up happening, but it sure as hell wasn't from lack of trying. I spent SO much time trying to get those tickets.

But now I have a different obsession. I want Barack Obama to win the presidency. I mean, I'm shooting for the primary first, but anyway... I've been checking Google, CNN, BBC, MSNBC, any n umber of blogs, even FOX! (ugh) ...all in an attempt to figure out how my man is doing, what the latest news is, who said what.

So I'm not sure why I didn't start doing this sooner, but today I started reading the online versions of *Iowa* news sources rather than the big media news sources that all repost the same bits and opinions. Admittedly, I don't know who owns The Des Moines Register, The Source (which is what most people in Fairfield, IA read), and others... but at least they offer a more a more local perspective.

One of the things I love about Obama is his ability to attract supporters from across the aisle, and to unite. So when I read this article, I wondered... why isn't our man going after these people?

Unrelated, but still from the Register, many Dems and GOP candidates have accepted invitations to a December 12th debate. Wish this was going to be shown live, nationally.
Also, look out for a free college plan that Obama is supposed to be unveiling today in Fort Dodge.

ANTI WAR PROTESTORS ARRESTED AT HILLARY'S

NOW WHY DO YOU THINK THAT ANTI-WAR PROTESTORS WOULD BE ARRESTED AT GIULIANI AND HILLARY'S CAMPAIGN OFFICES IN DES MOINES--Why weren't they protesting in front of Obama's, or Edward's offices or any of the other Democratic candidates--any guesses? Could it be that they view the other candidates as peacemakers and not War Mongers? Could it be that they see that Hillary and Giuliani each are the leading war hawks for their respective parties? I see it that way so I am not surprised.

Neo-cons are finally beginning to become threatened by antiwar demonstrations as the arrests have stepped up. Their “let’s just ignore them and they will go away” strategy has failed them and now they are getting more serious by making arrests. I think this is good since it will call more attention to the antiwar effort and to the Democratic candidate who pretends that she is antiwar.

18 Peacemakers Busted at Giuliani and Hillary Offices Eighteen peace activists were arrested in Des Moines, Iowa Thursday for trespassing inside the campaign offices of presidential candidates Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton, according to the Associated Press. (Now why should antiwar protesters be protesting Hillary’s office since she claims to be against Bush's Iraq War policies?)Published on Friday, November 9, 2007 by DesMoines Register (Iowa)

Jefferson Jackson Dinner: I am proud!!!

I have just finished watching the JJ dinner on C-SPAN, and I must say, I am proud to be a Democrat these days. I mean our candidates were shining out there!!! Nothing like when I was working - through Working America (AFL-CIO) - for the party in Ohio in 2004. I am actually inspired by every candidate. But of course, my favorite is Obama, and he has proven to me once more today that I am right to prefer him to all the rest.

My main attraction to Obama does not come from the fact that we share a higher level of melanin, but from the fact that even to produce soundbites, he does not let himself be driven away from core issues, and he makes a point to keep the content of his addresses substantive, even when that means a less catchy performance, because he trusts the American people to understands that these elections are not just a horse-race, but a true battle for the soul of America. A leader that trusts in the intelligence and the "common" sense of his people... what is there no to like. And today, he kept his crowd going, but never without reminding them why he is running, and why it is important, and what the stakes were.

There was more than a passing jab at the "front-runner", but that is to be expected. What I did not expect, however, was the almost chilly interactions with the aforementionned "front-runner" in the post speech photo-op/smile-and-shine-on-the-podium event. THe two hugged briefly... barely. I mean, Michele Obama was in deep conversation with the "front-runner" at the time, and they kept going after the hug, so I guess maybe I am reading too much into this. But I believve our ndugu Barack needs to make a point to keep on being friendly with the "f-r" off the stage, because it will underline that the differences are on issues and policies, not on their personnalities. He should keep on hammering hard on the issues, and pointing out the flaws and inconsistencies (I am so happy he started doing that more). But we are all Democrats, and the end of the day, WHEN Barack wins this, we will all still welcome the (allegedly) powerful Clinton Machine to win back the White House for the American people. That is my opinion.

In the mean time, Barack rocks, he has been rocking, and if we can just keep on supporting him, he will keep on rocking for the next 9 years!!!

President Barack Obama of the United States of America... I can't wait!!

This morning, volunteers and supporters in Des Moines were excited to hear former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle from South Dakota, former Oklahoma U.S. Congressman Brad Carson, and former Governor of Mississippi Ray Mabus speak about why Senator Obama is the best candidate to unite our country and move us past the red state and blue state divisions that have divided our country for so long. The three "red state" Democrats spoke to a crowd of almost 100 local supporters and volunteers who were about to go out canvassing for change in Des Moines.

Iowa State Representative Janet Petersen kicked off the event, telling the crowd that when she first ran for office, she knocked on doors every day from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm, and that was what made the difference in her election. Each of the speakers reminded volunteers that they are representatives of Senator Obama, and will be the ones who pushed Senator Obama over the edge on caucus night. "When the numbers come in on caucus night, and Barack Obama wins Iowa, you can feel proud that you were the ones who made that happen," said Governor Mabus.

Senator Daschle said that he believes in Barack because he "represents the change that our country so desperately needs."

Daschle believes that Barack's vision for the country, and his judgment over the years, make him the best candidate to put our country back in the right direction.

After the speakers energized the crowd, volunteers moved inside to be trained to canvass their neighborhoods. After a quick training, they were fired up and ready to go hit the doors!

Here is some video from the event.

Canvassing is one of the best ways to persuade undecided caucus-goers to support Barack! With only 61 days left until the Iowa Caucuses, we need everyone's help to spread Barack's message of hope and change. To find out about volunteer opportunities near you, click here.

"They're all our kids"

On Saturday, at the Amos Issues Conference taking place at Plymouth United Church of Christ in Des Moines, Barack participated with some Iowans in a panel discussion about some of the most pressing concerns facing Americans today. He spoke about the minimum wage, immigration, and healthcare. He also spoke about his community organizing days, and how he learned that listening to people and helping to figure out ways to make their hopes and dreams come to fruition was a hallmark of true leadership.

Barack also outlined his plans for improving education, which includes expanding investment in early childhood education, supporting teachers more, and working on making after-school and summer school programs more available. He also pointed out that even with all these programs, at the end of the day, a lot of our issues come down to individual Americans taking responsibility and said that as President he will be talking to Americans not just about his policies, but about the things they can and should be doing in their everyday life to address the problems we face – like turning off the tv and video games, and making sure kids are doing their homework.

But, he said, the gridlock and conventional thinking in Washington are the true impediments to progress in this and many other policy areas.

We know what to do. The problem is the lack of a sense of urgency. These kids aren't just some other person's problem, they're all our kids. And things won't change until every child is our child.

After the panel, the attendees of the conference broke out into workgroups on the issues discussed. One of the things that Barack has stressed in his campaign is the need for Americans of all faiths to come together, recognize our common values, and enter into dialogues and take action. This is the impetus for our Faith-Action-Change network.

What do you think about education policy, or the role of faith in working for social justice? Talk about it in the comments.

Obama’s Sincerity Inspires Guests at Annual Sisters on Target Awards Banquet

Genuine, authentic, honest, or sincere—take your pick—it’s not often that these words are used to describe a politician. But for the many people who have heard Senator Barack Obama speak, such words of praise are never in short supply. Last Saturday, Senator Obama spoke at the annual Sisters on Target Awards Banquet in Des Moines, Iowa. Unsurprisingly, Senator Obama’s speech was received with the same praiseful enthusiasm he has received across the nation. The senator connected with the hundreds of African American guests assembled to celebrate the accomplishments of Iowa’s African American women.
The senator spoke from the heart as he extolled the role African American women played during the civil rights movement, correctly noting that while they provided the backbone of the movement, their work was too often ignored by their civil rights counterparts. But it was not just the words and phrases in the Senator’s speech that excited the audience; rather, it was his pure and natural authenticity that sparked and sustained the audience’s admiration. Veola Perry, a longtime community volunteer in Des Moines and former public school teacher, was passionate in her description of the Senator’s speech. “Obama rose to the occasion,” Veola told me after the event, “He was knowledgeable and honest about addressing issues facing the African American community. He was willing to tell the truth.” Senator Obama’s speech left her “fired-up and ready to go.”

Obama candidly stated that his presidency would not be perfect, but finished these thoughts by saying, “I will always tell you what I think. I will always tell you where we stand." Displaying the leadership and judgment needed to take America in a new direction, Senator Obama affirmed that "I'm not going to win just by being the most calculating politician in this race.” His remarks and the overwhelming response they received showed why, of all the candidates, he best understands and addresses the issues impacting the black community.

It's All About the Grassroots: Women for Obama Training in Des Moines

Organization, organization, organization – that’s what it takes to make change on any level, and it's definitely what it takes to get it done on caucus night here in Iowa. Barack always emphasizes that this campaign is not just about winning an election - it's about transforming the way we interact with each other and aligning our politics with our core values as Americans.

That’s the reason our campaign slogan here in Iowa is Respect, Empower, Include. And on Saturday in Des Moines we had a Women for Obama training designed to do just that.

Hundreds of women from all over the state came together to talk about the campaign's policies, message, and field program. The program was led by our Iowa Director of Political Operations Gillian Rosenberg and included presentations from Betsy Myers (campaign Chief Operating Officer and Chair of National Women for Obama), Becky Carroll (National Director of Women for Obama), Gannet Tseggai (Iowa Deputy Press Secretary), Katie McCormick Lleyveld (Communications Director for Michelle Obama), Lauren Paige (Media Coordinator), and Anne Filipic (Iowa Field Director).

Sitting through the day, and listening to the ideas and conversations of all the participants, it was truly inspiring to see the incredible group of women that we have involved at the top levels in this campaign – all of whom believe that the key to tackling the issues that most affect women has to be changing our politics.

Barack stopped by the training to thank everyone for their time and energy, and was greeted by a standing ovation. He spoke about the importance of women's involvement in politics, all the strong women in his life, and how their values and wisdom continue to guide him every day.

In the grand tradition of women throughout history, Barack's supporters are those who want to get it done – those who want health insurance for themselves and their children, those who want their sisters and brothers to come home from Iraq and to be treated with respect and dignity upon their return, those who want a clean, beautiful, and healthy planet left behind for future generations. The women in the training want to get it done now, by renewing Americans' faith in our political leadership and ensuring that our standard bearer is someone who can unite those who disagree.

If you're in Iowa, contact your local field office to find out about a Women for Obama group near you.
Calling on God to help us get the votes!!!

Senator Obama continues to clarify why he is the best Dem candidate for President each time he delivers a policy speech. This Sunday morning (Oct 14) in Des Moines, IA, he continued to reach toward the attainment of that goal by reaching out to our heads and hearts through an interfaith forum.

Fortunately, through the power of technology, we will soon be able to see this speech in which he articulated his proposal on the environment, energy, and how his faith informs his position on global warming (when I find a link, I'll post it here). To be able to see him in person is heartwarming. He always inspires us with his message of HOPE while being honest as he tells us that work and personal sacrifice will be required. He never implies that we'll be able to have our cake and to eat it, too, unlike some currently on the stump. He prefers taking the honest position of statesman much more that that of politician pandering for votes.

Unfortunately for our nation, our current President may still believe that global warming is largely a hoax. (See: Link )

Is there any question why we need the Senator from Illinois to become the President of these United States? Listen and observe and you will see that he can lead our country back to a position of respect in the world, yet for some, that is not a shared belief. Thus, we who support him must continue to reach out to every single voter.

I know many believe we can "pray our candidate" into the oval office, yet I'm afraid we not only need prayer -- we need canvasers, supporters, and we need to reach out for every single vote! To win the general election, he must first win the nomination, and the former may be less difficult than the later, unless he has our collective help. Yes, this is a campaign that will be won in the trenches and in the door to door canvassing for individual voter support.

We are very blessed as a country to have such a man as Barack running for President. If there is one thing that we could and perhaps should be praying for, it is for his safety, and that he will be successful at turning people's hearts back to the compassionate God who really cares about people. Senator Obama made it very clear on Sunday that he is a man of faith, but he is a realist -- we can't wait for God to solve all of our problems in heaven, we must take action right here on Earth!

Oh God, we do so very much ask for your hand to guide and protect him. And yes, we selfishly ask for you to help him win enough voter's hearts that our nation can install him as President on January 20, 2009!

Door knocking can be fun!!!

I always love getting out to see the neighbors. Sure, I feel better about it when I meet people who say, "Obama? Oh sure, I'm already on board!". We all like to think that there are others who agree with us.

Yet, I also enjoy learning how to listen intentively to those who don't agree, perhaps sitting on the fence, searching their head or heart for an answer. I've been there many times before -- being unsure of who I wanted to support when there were 90 days left until caucus night. It's not really a sin, yet it's such a peaceful feeling to have declared for Barack Obama and fairly early in the election cycle.

In fact, it's such a good feeling, I want to get out and reach more undecideds while there is still time to have an impact! Once they have reached a decision, I accept that I can't actually change anyone's mind -- arm twisting doesn't work in politics. However, while there are still undecideds out there, I want to be one of the first to knock on their door.

Were I independently wealthy, I could do it nearly every day. I find I really love people, and any timidity I have in the first few minutes is usually dispelled by a nice person's reaction early in the day. "Oh, hi. Good to see you! Come on in and talk to me!". That was the reaction of the first person I met today, and unbeknownst to her, she really made my day.

So, what a great way to spend some time, stumping for our candidate and telling the world about his strengths. Senator Obama makes it exceptionally easy to go knock on some doors because he's such a great candidate! Whenever I shake his hand, he energizes me and I'm good for days. Does he do that for you, too?

I know he's not a rock star, and that I therefore cannot be one of his groupies. Yet, he is so very inspiring -- he makes me want to go out and spread his gospel, telling people that his time has come, and that his time is ... now!

Barack Obama is going to make a very fine President. That's what I want to tell the world, one door at a time ...

Canvass for Change: Barack takes to the Iowa streets

Today Obama supporters all over the country went door-to-door to talk to their neighbors about Barack's message of turning the page in Iraq. Here in Iowa, it was a little rainy but that didn't stop us! A few of our early-rising volunteers put together a makeshift phone bank to make sure everyone was going to brave the weather and still come out to canvass.

Sure enough, we had a great turnout. After a kickoff rally at East High School in Des Moines, Barack headed out to knock doors. Here's a slide show of pictures from the day.

Did you canvass for change today? Let us know about it in the comments!

The Mo is shifting - toward Obama.

While we still don't know that Jan 14th will remain the official caucus night for Iowa, it doesn't take a weatherman to tell which way the wind is currently blowing. But will it stay on course?

I'm more than a little biased, of course, having come out for Obama earlier in this election cycle than I have for any candidate, ever, yet I have good emperical evidence to support my claim -- two of my three children have made the switch from supporting the Republican party (only one voted Democratic in '04!), one of them has signed a supporter card, and one is leaning Obama. The Joe Biden supporter is away in China and won't be home for causus night. His vote won't count this cycle. My wife has even become active, as a supporter! I'm amazed at what Senator Obama has managed to do -- awaken my wife's political passions which is almost unheard of!

In our house, we seem to really like Joe Biden but we truely love Barack Obama.

If this microcosm of under-30 year olds is any indication, and this demographic braves the cold air for caucus night, the mo for Obama will be hard to stop. Of course, Obama 28%, Clinton, 24%, Edwards 22%* does not a victory make. We've got a lot more work to do, and Iowa is only one state. But it's a big one!

With Senator Obama's cross-hairs occassionally on target to the nomination, we who support this campaign have a lot to be thankful for -- our candidate is easy to support, seemingly sans baggage from Washington-insider, bad experiences. His staunch stand against the Iraq war has been consistent. His passionate zeal to help the common man -- in his bones since his days at Columbia, southside Chicago, Harvard, the Illinois Legislature, and the U.S. Senate.

The more we know about Barack, the easier it is to like him. He seems to have no hidden agenda -- being genuine in his passion to be a public servant.

Here in Iowa, we've been kicking the tires and looking under the hood for several months now. The more we look the stronger Obama's momentum grows. Apparently, as evidenced from this latest poll, we're liking what we're seeing ...

*Newsweek's poll was conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International on Sept. 26-27.

Barack's Birthday Canvass and BBQ in Des Moines

On Saturday, our Polk County office saw many volunteers come in to hit the neighborhoods and the phones for Barack's birthday. The day started with both new canvass recruits and seasoned veterans being trained for their job to bring this campaign's message to Iowans' doorsteps.

Volunteer canvassers Julie and Ashley arrived ready and raring to hit the streets for Barack's birthday. In a half hour they were trained and out the door, just two of the many volunteers who came to help the effort.

One group of folks showed up in the Obamabus! It looked great and got some happy honks on the road.

The birthday party/BBQ after a long day of hard work was a great way to wind down. With Polk County organizers Ronnie (left) and Francis at the grill, everyone was able to have a good time while enjoying delicious hotdogs, as well as some beautiful cakes that a couple local volunteers made. Everyone was happy to celebrate Barack's vision for bringing people together to change our country and to talk to people about all that he can do.

Barack stops by the Heritage Carousel in DSM

Yesterday, Barack finished up his most recent trip to Iowa with a stop by the Heritage Carousel at Union Park in Des Moines.

We had a lively crowd for so early in the morning. There was face-painting, Obama trivia and, of course, the carousel. That's our local organizer Aaron warming up the crowd.

Barack was introduced by Will Page, the president of the Union Park Neighborhood Association. Barack was interrupted by applause several times during his remarks that focused on his plan to lower health-care costs and make coverage universal, improve our schools and meet our energy needs.

But the strongest response came when Barack laid out his vision for a significant change in American foreign policy. The applause became a standing ovation as Barack enlisted the help of those in the audience - and Americans all over the country - to make their voices heard to help him bring real change.

Barack would have liked to stay a little longer than he did, but it was his mother-in-law's birthday and he had to get back home to celebrate!

Check out all the pictures from Union Park here.

Barack will be back in Iowa tomorrow morning. He'll be in Cedar Rapids at Roosevelt Middle School.
Barack Stops By Des Moines Headquarters

After a great speech at DMACC on Tuesday about jobs and the economic impact of Iraq on Iowa families, Barack stopped by the Iowa campaign headquarters in the East Village in Des Moines.

While in theory the event was going to be a surprise, the irresistibly exciting rumor of Senator Obama’s visit spread quickly among the interns and volunteers. Nevertheless, when Barack walked into the office he definitely surprised a few us who had been busy on the phones and didn’t hear the flurry of excitement.

When Senator Obama strolled into field organizer alley, there were cheers of excitement at meeting him in person. A few first-time volunteers found themselves in a state of blissful disbelief at having chosen such a day to come lend a hand. After shaking hands, chatting, and smiling for photos, Senator Obama said hello to interns, volunteers and organizers all over the state on a surprise conference call!

The visit proved to be an unforgettable day for interns, volunteers and organizers already energized about the amazing things happening in Iowa. Although we have been incredibly energized ever since we took our first steps on this campaign, this kind of firsthand inspiration makes it easy to put in those extra hours!

Do you have some time to stop by a local field office and volunteer?
Just heard Senator Obama speak at the Des Moines Area Community College this morning--on jobs and economy, health care, war spending, and more. It was my fourth time at an event where he spoke, but the first where I wasn't busy with volunteer duties, so I was able to get a good seat and hear all of his speech. I keep thinking some day he's going to say something I disagree with, but it just hasn't happened yet. And the content of what he says is not that pandering-to-the-audience, applause-line kind of talk. It's real talk with real ideas presented with intelligence and integrity. What a breath of fresh air!

I especially appreciated his response to a question concerning what qualifications he would look for in a vice-president and cabinet members given the ethically-challenged current administration. He said he would look for three characteristics: integrity, competence, and independence. They have to be there because they believe in public service, not in serving some private interest. They have to be competent in the job for which they are hired. And if they leave his employ, they cannot lobby his administration as long as he is in office.

Wouldn't that be a change--an administration that actually served as a role model for ethical (and constitutional) behavior instead of a lesson on how not to behave? Americans are hungry and thirsty for this kind of change--for a government we can be proud to call our own.
Let's politely respond to newpapers and encourage support for our Candidate!

I wanted to share this post. I was sent a link to the Des Moines Register and in their caucus section, the register was bragging about the turn out for the Clintons and praising Hillary and Bill during their visit on the 4th of July. I tried to be polite, as they asked, so, I did add a little kissy, kissy, which I don't usually do. Will you forgive me this time? LOL

PostPosted: Sat Jul 07, 2007 11:31 am DES MOINES REGISTER Post subject: Are you voting for Hillary or Bill?
"I would just like to remind everyone that Hillary Clinton is the person that is running for president, not 'our' dear Bill. I like Hillary as a person, I can see why a woman would be appealing to our nation. I know that President Bill Clinton did many wonderful things for our country and that it was a much better time for our country, when he was in office.

However, we are now in the 21st century and our current government has done so much damage, that it will take a lot to get us back on the right track, again. I, for one, do not want to return to the past, I would like to see the page turned forward not backwards. Please take some time to think about this. Bill Clinton did wonders then, and he continues to do great things for our country and around the world. I believe that all of our candidates understand that and have a great respect for the former President Clinton and will continue to encourage and support him to keep up his good works in the future. But, if I may repeat myself, we are voting for Hillary, not Bill. We had a great President Clinton for 8 years, but please, let's try something new that will move us into the future with a passion. Please take a moment to listen to what Senator Obama has to say, he truly wants to put the 'we the people' back into government, to end the corruption in Washington and he is not accepting any money from lobbyists or PAC's in funding his campaign. He's letting us do that! He is worth the time it takes to listen to a podcast or video feed on barackobama.com or YouTube, and he has my vote.

Thank you for taking the time to read my opinion."

I wanted to share this with you in hopes that you would like to respond to this paper or any other papers that you find out there! Or just send a letter to your local paper.....there are websites that will help you with the writing format, if you would like to use them.

heres the link, that I used.........I hope I can get it to work!
Iowan Women: Ready for a New Kind of Politics

Michelle Obama asked an important question at our July 4th event at Beaverdale Park in Des Moines:

The question that I ask people isn't to wonder whether Barack is ready to lead - because Barack is ready. The question is are you ready? Are YOU ready to embrace change? Are you ready to put some empathy back in government?"
Well, a few of the women I spoke to at that Beaverdale event sure had an emphatic answer to Michelle's question.

Lisa and (a different) Michelle were among the women who came out to our Beaverdale event on July 4th, watching their children on the playground and waiting to listen to the Obamas speak.

Lisa is a teacher who is drawn to Barack's intelligence and great ability to communicate - "he can express his positions and compromise to get the necessary consensus. He would rebuild our relationships abroad and he understands that has to be the first priority."

Michelle was drawn to Barack as a candidate because she feels he truly understands the struggles of being a young family. And both Michelle and Lisa cited health care costs as a constant struggle, saying that skyrocketing premiums are making it very hard for their families to stay on solid financial ground and get adequate care, and they think that Barack is the candidate most likely to change this.

A few feet away, Julie (below) was also looking forward to the remarks. She had drawn a picture of Barack and made the tshirt she's wearing. When asked about her enthusiastic support for Barack, she responded, "He supports everything I believe in, and he's going to bring us together."

Joan, an ESL teacher in Des Moines, eagerly sat and waited close to the stage as Barack was due to appear in only moments. She said she was recently drawn to Barack Obama because of what she had seen in our recent ads in Iowa. She was impressed by "the work he did in the community prior to his career in politics" and his being "the first of the presidential candidates to stand up against the Iraq war."

Joan was joined by her friend Monica from Sudan. Monica and her then 5 year old son Abor were living in Sudan only nine short years ago when they packed their bags in hope a better life in a land that promised hope and opportunity. They moved to Des Moines in 1998 and Monica has watched Abor, now fourteen and going into highschool, grow up in the United States. It wasn't until recently that she became a full citizen with the right to vote and she isn't taking the task lightly. Monica said she was "looking forward to vote for the first time and being able to play a major role in her government." The main issues Monica said she was "concerned with are domestic issues such as health care and education."

All these women of different backgrounds gathered in Beaverdale Park on July 4th to take some time to listen to Michelle and Barack speak, and they all had one thing in common: a strong desire for a change in the direction of the country, a dream of a better place for themselves, their loved ones and their children. Their commitment and their vision, and that of so many others around this state and country, are the engines of Barack's campaign.

And these women - and other Women for Obama all over the country - are certain about their answer to Michelle Obama's question. American women are ready for a new kind of politics. They're ready for change. And they're ready for Barack Obama.

Do you want to become part of Women for Obama? Come help us out, and spread the word!

Independence Day with the Obamas at Beaverdale Park

4:32 pm - We're up and running in Beaverdale Park. The crowd is growing and it's a beautiful 4th of July evening. We've got all sorts of fun activities in the "Kids Corner" and a ton of great food.
Our local field organizer, Ali Sutton, started things off with some Obama Trivia and a little info about what the campaign has been doing in the area. She made a big push for volunteers, so find your local office and sign up to help out!

Malia even has a birthday cake!

4:50 pm - Michelle was just introduced state Rep. Janet Peterson, and is speaking now.
"The only thing Barack doesn't have is years in Washington and we've seen what years in Washington do."
"Barack Obama has the kind of experience that we want and we need."

"We've said that we are looking for somebody who is decent, who is hardworking, who is honest, who is a good parent, who is intelligent, who is tough, who made the call on the war - he spoke out against the war when it was not popular."

"The question that I ask people isn't to wonder whether Barack is ready to lead - because Barack is ready. The question is are you ready? Are YOU ready to embrace change? Are you ready to put some empathy back in government, and if you are, then the man that you are looking for is my husband, the next President of the United States, Barack Obama."

   5:06 pm - Barack:

"Happy 4th of July everybody, as Michelle said, this is also known as Malia's birthday. For a while I was able to get away with telling her that i had arranged all the fireworks for her - but now that she's nine, she no longer believes me."

And we just had a quick moment that no one planned for. A little girl ran up to Barack on stage. She just really wanted to say hi to the next President of the United States!

Barack handled it in stride:

"I know you think some political consultant was down here saying, go go, run up there. That was her idea, though."

He went pretty seamlessly back into his remarks.

"We can solve the problems that face us and make a better future for our children; that's what the American people are looking for."

"Remember, when we celebrate Independence Day what we're celebrating. We're celebrating our freedom but it is hard earned freedom."

5:23 pm - Looking around seeing all the kids playing on the swings, getting their faces painted and having a good time, you really remember why we're all here. We're looking for the change and the person who can bring that change to truly make this a better country. It's about the future.

Barack is continuing into his opposition to the war:

"I will not be distracted by wars of choice, we will focus on wars of necessity."

Now, Barack is helping two twin girls find their parents. Man, he really does it all!

"Wait, before I finish up, there's two little girls here, twins, looking for their parents. Mom, Dad? Raise your hands--oh good. They're really cute. They look well fed."

5:26 pm - Barack just finished his remarks and is working the crowd.

Now it's off to tailgating and the Iowa Cubs game! Should be a fun way to finish off a long day in the heat.

Iowa celebrates Juneteenth

Saturday was the official Iowa Juneteenth observance.

Juneteenth is an annual celebration of the end of slavery in the United States that 23 states officially observe with parades, festivals, and picnics. Iowa was the seventh state to officially recognize Juneteenth as an annually-celebrated holiday.

Here in Des Moines, volunteers for Barack were excited to participate in this year's parade:

And even more excited to pass out stickers to kids who were a lot cuter than us!

Just after the parade, during the festivities at Evelyn Davis Park, we answered questions about Barack and signed people up who wanted more information or wanted to let us know they support Barack:

It was an awesome day, but it was pretty hot outside, and the kids playing in the fountain in Evelyn Davis Park had the right idea.

For more pictures of the park and the parade, click here.

If you're a supporter of the campaign, click here to let us know!

This weekend’s ‘Walk for Change’ was amazing! People began filing into the Des Moines field office at 11:00am, and excitement was in the air. Supporters from all across Polk County were meeting and talking to each other before we started, and began conversations that spanned from the inner city to the suburbs.

At noon, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller spoke to the volunteers about the importance of this race.

He said that in his 30 years of electoral experience, he has never been so inspired or excited about a candidate as he is by Barack Obama.

After he spoke, we broke into separate staging areas where Field Organizers showed volunteers how to conduct a successful canvass.

After the training, former Des Moines city manager Richard Wilkey introduced Representative Neil Abercrombie from Hawaii, who opened with an "Aloha."

Rep. Abercrombie attended the University of Hawaii with Sen. Obama's father, and told the crowd that Barack's values will help unite our country. He said, "Barack was born into a world where diversity defines us, rather than divides us." And he noted that the Hawaiian word "ohana," which means "family," describes the movement that Barack Obama has started in America.

Grassroots canvassing is where it all starts, and we joined together in "ohana" to pound the pavement for change.

After Rep. Abercrombie's inspiring speech, we drove to our respective neighborhoods and communities.

With over 100 canvassers county-wide, we talked with our neighbors, family and friends about Senator Obama, and his vision to end the Iraq War, provide universal health care coverage, and make sure our children have the education they need to compete in the global economy.

The day was incredible. Due to the hard work and effort at the grassroots level, we talked with thousands of people across Polk County, and across the nation.

I think that's what this campaign is truly about - bringing people together around common goals, and letting them know that hope is just over the horizon, and that we as the "United States" can achieve anything when we are united, and not divided.

Tom Daschle coming to Des Moines!

This Saturday, former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle is coming to Des Moines to host the grand opening of our state headquarters. Senator Daschle has been a big supporter of Barack’s from very early on and it’s exciting to have him here!
In an email that Senator Daschle just sent out to Iowans in the Des Moines area, he talked a little about why he’s supporting Barack:

Sometimes exceptional leaders come along at the right time to guide us through pivotal periods in the course of history. With a tragic war raging indefinitely, millions of Americans (and thousands of Iowans) living precariously without adequate health care, and our moral standing in the world community severely diminished, today we stand at one of those pivotal times.

Thankfully, Barack Obama has emerged as a leader with a vision for changing the way things are done and leading our country towards a brighter future. That's why I'm standing with him in this campaign.

We’re going to have (free!) refreshments, music and a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday. Barack’s been pretty active in Iowa for awhile now but this is the official opening of our HQ.

We’re at 323 E. Locust in the East Village. Things will get started around Noon.

Go here to RSVP. Bring your friends and family. It should be a good time!

Seniors respond well to Barack’s health-care ideas in Des Moines

First off, let me introduce myself. I just started working in Barack’s Des Moines office. I had my first in-person Barack experience early last year, when I saw him give a speech in Minnesota. He blew me away. His message about changing the ways of Washington, and bringing different kinds of people together, was believable optimism that I hadn’t ever really heard from a politician.

For him, it’s not just about winning 51 percent of the vote. It’s about solving the smallness of our politics. It’s about solving the biggest problems of our time. And it’s about having the courage to say enough is enough – it’s time to do what’s right for our country, and not what’s politically expedient.

That’s why I have chosen to devote the next 18 months to doing my small part to help elect Barack Obama as president.

Anyway, now on to the real reason for my first post. I went to an event this morning at a senior center in Des Moines. Barack spoke about health care to a nice crowd of about 150. We should have some pictures up soon. In the meantime, check out a couple Reuters pictures here and here.

Click here to read the rest of this post.

Respect, Empower, Include

Hi, this is Iowa State Director Paul Tewes. I wanted to take a moment to talk about a slogan we use in our office and also as driving influence in our Iowa campaign: Respect, Empower, Include.

I hope that these three words – which are painted large in the entryway to our Des Moines office – serve as a constant reminder of how this campaign will be conducted in Iowa.

From the start, what drew me to this campaign was the fact that Barack wanted to bring a new kind of politics to America. For me, these three words, Respect, Empower, Include, represent the way that Barack hopes to engage Iowans and all Americans. By having the vision to engage with individuals in a way that shows them respect, empowers and includes them in a campaign, Barack demonstrates that he is the candidate who will bring about the change that the American people demand.

Today, Obama organizers from across the state are coming to the Des Moines headquarters for training and to talk about our path forward to the Iowa Caucuses. During these meetings the staff will talk about how we can use these words as guiding principles in our interactions with Iowans, so that our engagement within communities in Iowa are a reflection of the greater goals of Barack’s campaign.

I'll post a picture of the entryway as soon as i can figure out how to do it...

Barack in Des Moines - My Thoughts

Tonight I was incredibly lucky. I live in Harpers Ferry, WV and work in Washington, DC - yet I happened to be on travel to Des Moines this week for work. I was incredibly lucky because Sen. Obama decided to make a stop in Des Moines tonight, only blocks from my hotel.

His website said doors opened for the event at 6:45 - so naturally I arrived at 5:30 filled with excitement at the chance to see the Senator and hear his thoughts on how we can fix America. The doors, not suprisingly, were already open at 5:30 and I went ahead into the convention center and took a set in the first non-reserved row of seats, about 10 feet from the stage. A great seat indeed!

This is the second time I have had the pleasure of taking in an Obama event in person. The first was last fall at the West Virginia Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner in Charleston, WV. From his talk in WV, I walked away in awe at his great speaking abilities and extreme presence he immediately commands when walking into a room. But that is not what I came away with tonight, and that is not a bad thing. I expected to feel the same after hearing him a second time, but there really was a major difference. Given the format of the event, an Iowan Town Hall Meeting, I got to hear Sen. Obama react to completely unscreened questions and give his off the cuff response to things from handling family court issues to how to fight cancer. And while it was rather obvious that he is pretty new to this taking random questions from a nationally minded audience, you could not help but have a feeling of familiarity with him. He somehow has a way of instantly connecting with every single person in the room. He definitely achieves one of the biggest goals of any politician - making your audience feel like they can relate to you. And boy does he. And as hard as it is to believe that any politician is genuine, you walk away without a doubt in your mind that this man is as honest as they come, as caring as they come, and as REAL as they come.

This, my friend, is why Senator Barack Obama is the person who can fix America. I don't use the term "change" because we need more than change. We need to work with all Americans to FIX America. We must change the perception around the wold of the evil US and start making friends and cooperative partners on all continents. And we must do this while fixing the enormous domestic problems related to healthcare, education, energy and security.

Barack is the candidate who can do this. Have no doubt.
