This morning, volunteers and supporters in Des Moines were excited to hear former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle from South Dakota, former Oklahoma U.S. Congressman Brad Carson, and former Governor of Mississippi Ray Mabus speak about why Senator Obama is the best candidate to unite our country and move us past the red state and blue state divisions that have divided our country for so long. The three "red state" Democrats spoke to a crowd of almost 100 local supporters and volunteers who were about to go out canvassing for change in Des Moines.
Iowa State Representative Janet Petersen kicked off the event, telling the crowd that when she first ran for office, she knocked on doors every day from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm, and that was what made the difference in her election. Each of the speakers reminded volunteers that they are representatives of Senator Obama, and will be the ones who pushed Senator Obama over the edge on caucus night. "When the numbers come in on caucus night, and Barack Obama wins Iowa, you can feel proud that you were the ones who made that happen," said Governor Mabus.
Senator Daschle said that he believes in Barack because he "represents the change that our country so desperately needs."
Daschle believes that Barack's vision for the country, and his judgment over the years, make him the best candidate to put our country back in the right direction.
After the speakers energized the crowd, volunteers moved inside to be trained to canvass their neighborhoods. After a quick training, they were fired up and ready to go hit the doors!
Here is some video from the event.
Canvassing is one of the best ways to persuade undecided caucus-goers to support Barack! With only 61 days left until the Iowa Caucuses, we need everyone's help to spread Barack's message of hope and change. To find out about volunteer opportunities near you,
