I am asking you to stop posting messages that mis-state the situation. There is already an amendment in place - which the health insurance bill will be subordinate to - that supports what you want about forbidding federal funds to pay for abortion.
SO do not mis-state this situation.

AND I am asking you to consider carefully the way in earlier posts you have applied "moral" to this situation.
I say firmly that my morals will stand up to yours and others. My morals say a woman, her family, her medical providers, and her religious counselors must consider matters of birth and death carefully and respectfully to reach a decision and take the best actions. For government to vitiate that decision by taking away some actions is itself an improper civic action.

However, if my delegate in the House had the right to vote, I would ask her to consider her civic duty. Her civic duty is to vote to get health insurance reform for the citizens of this country. She must not follow those who draw a "line in the sand" that will deny our chance at affordable, quality healthcare for those who are not rich. If she must, she should "hold her nose" and vote for a bill in spite of whether she agrees with an amendment to it. Whatever her religion instructs her about morality, she must do her civic duty to the millions and millions of citizens in whose stead the members of the house vote.

I wish our delegate, Eleanor Holmws Norton, could vote because she has shown time and again that she can make the difficult choices that must be made for good civic action. I am sure today she is working very hard for health insurance reform even though she, like the rest of us who live in DC, have taxation with no representation.

When it comes down to it, as the law stands now, abortion is a class issue. The wealthy have and will continue to have the right and access to safe abortions. The poor will be forced into unsafe abortion situations or into having unwanted children they don't want and can't afford to raise.

I missed most of the news conference, but I have some random thoughts. Pelosi had a wonderful process for this final bill. Only 1 amendment will be discussed, plus 1 alternate bill offered by republicans. She also set time limits so the process could move quickly. I hope Harry Reid and the Senate are watching. No need for endless debate on issues we have been discussing for 40+ years.

President Obama will be speaking at 1:15pm EST.

this sorry excuse of man tried to have it both ways and insisted he supported a public option, even as he pledges to vote down the house bill because it costs too much.

assure him the grassroots WILL fund his opponent during the primary if he doesn't do right by this vote.

Caught some of his C-SPAN interview earlier, but missed who he was, & which state he represented.
Jim Marshall's (D-Ga) "big-deal" is "reform of our third-party payment system."
He quotes David Goldhill's article in The Atlantic entitled;
"How American Health Care Killed My Father." as basis for his argument.

HOWEVER, President Obama chose NOT to proceed by throwing out everything, & starting our medical system over from scratch!
(That's why Sen. Barack Obama did not support a single-payer system, which would have brought down costs too!)

In my opinion, (agree with you Omen),
Jim Marshall (D-Ga) is trying to have it both ways...
Saying to Democratic voters in his district;
"...insisting he supports a public option, even as he pledges to vote down House bill because it costs too much."
Meanwhile, he can say to his Red State voters,
"I didn't vote for Democratic health reform bill"

Democrat Jim Marshall is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition.
He is one of only two Democrats-- along with Bobby Bright-- who voted against the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act, which expanded publicly-funded health care for uninsured children.

The district, which was numbered as the 3rd District from 2003 to 2007, is based in Macon and includes much of rural Middle Georgia.
Marshall first ran for Congress in 2000 as the Democratic candidate for the 8th District. Despite being the former mayor of Macon--by far the biggest city in the district--he lost by 18 points to incumbent Saxby Chambliss.
After the 2000 Census, the state legislature carved away much of the heavily Republican southern portion of the old 8th (including Chambliss' home in Moultrie). They replaced it with some more rural, Democratic-leaning territory around Macon and renumbered it the 3rd District. Despite this, Marshall barely defeated Republican Bibb County Commissioner Calder Clay in 2002, due in part to the Republican wave that swept through Georgia.
Marshall thus became the first white Democrat to represent Georgia in the House since 1995. Marshall handily defeated Clay in their 2004 rematch, winning 63% of the vote.
Early in 2005, the Georgia state legislature--now controlled by Republicans--approved a new map of congressional districts. Although it retained just under 60 percent of Marshall's former territory, it is considerably more Republican than its predecessor. Marshall won a close election 51%-49%, although Collins benefited from two visits by President George W. Bush and massive amounts of national party and PAC funding. GA-8 is one of the most Republican districts in the nation to be represented by a Democrat in 2006.

Has any of u read the bill. How do u like mandates. If u dont buy insurance u pay a fine if u dont go to jail. Folks this bill is scary. Read the Bill. This bill will benefit private insurance. Since u can go to jail for non insurance people will flock to private insurance companies. Insurance companies have a way to go around things. Read the Bill. Its not enough to pass a bill for historical purposes if u can go to jail for non compliance. I think alot of u dont know whas in the bill. Read the bill.

The IRS code can put you in jail for not paying taxes. Seldom does that happen. Based on my general understanding of tax law and when jail comes into play, usually you have to commit fraud or other egregious things to face jail time.

Therefore, my assumption is that if one decides to violate the mandate, then they will be fined. Jail would probably only come into play if people try to defraud the mandate system, like those who try to defraud the tax system.

Moreover, this bill includes many subsidies for people to buy insurance if they can't afford it, there are many exceptions to the mandate, for various reasons.

I have a feeling in the years to come, it will be very few who intentionally and willfully decide not to get insurance, either through their job or through the exchange.

Yesterday (or recently) I posted condensed column By David Cay Johnston, on 'Mandated Federal Property Insurance' (from floods), that Republicans were not only in favor of, but enthusiastically supported!

Especially former Republican Senate leader Trent Lott of Mississippi, who was State's Senior Senator when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, flooding his Gulf home.
Also joining Lott, was Republican Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, Head of Republican Party Governors, who gave today's rebuttal of President Obama's weekly TV briefing.

They didn't holler about "Government take over of Flood Insurance", or gripe about "Mandated Property Insurance", because THEY WERE BAILED OUT BY FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!!

Please call your representative (staffers are in the office today) and urge them to vote against the Stupak Amendment.

If the Stupak Amendment is not defeated, all insurance companies who participate in the exchange will not be able to provide a full array of reproductive services to women. The Hyde Amendment already restricts federal dollars from being spent on elective abortion, we do not need additional legislation.

The United States Coalition of Catholic Bishops have manipulated a group of legislators into producing this amendment. Where is the separation of church and state?

Please urge a NO vote on the Stupak Amendment.

marcy kaptur's staffer didn't have a clue why she isn't supporting the bill. she's still waiting to hear from her constituents. i asked hasn't she been paying attention to the debate going on all year?

joe donnelly is anti-choice. wasn't assuaged by the president's promise no federal funds will go for abortion.

michael mcmahon staffer cited abortion & taxes for not supporting the bill.

glenn nye doesn't like how the bill doesn't bring down the cost of medicine or cost of premiums.

told them all their opposition puts them on the wrong side of history and their petty rationales will be read by the grassroots as an excuse to do the bidding of the insurance lobby. assured them that they've gotten fair warning that they will be opposed in the primary.

The fact that it isn't bipartisan is the only negative they can find. This bill is fair, it's moderate, and it will help many people. Any rational person should agree. But the media needs drama, so pointing to unanimous GOP opposition is the way to go.

The Medicare monies they claim to be protecting is the pure gravy and overkill monies that the government pays to insurance companies for merely "making available" supplements to Medicare.

No goods are received for this money, it is pure gold for the insurance companies and yes it is out of our Medicare budget. If it were eliminated, the supplements would still be offered because it is still a gravy train for all involved. This provision was a "thank you" gift to insurance companies for all the neat campagin contributions they routinely give.

None the less, the Republicans run ads making people feel like their Medicare coverage will be cut if these payments cease.

By the time this bill gets to the senate it will be watered down or kiled. Watch the concessions senate dems will have to make to get olympia snowe and blue dogs. Honestly there is notexcitement here for me. Dems are expected to pass a bill thats a given. All they need is 218 votes and they have 256 dems. So that is a given. If the dems are struggling to get 218 and they have a super majority that says alot. Its like having the dream team in basketball and expect them to lose. In the senate the dems are barely making 60..as a matter of fact they dont have 60 votes coz at least 10 of the senate dems are against reform as it is. So now u see the hurdles we got ahead. There is no way this bill passed by congress will pass the senate as is. By the time the senate gets the bill it will be either be Killed or watered down like crazy. If u look back the senate and house have a habit of killing bills when one house passes it. So lets not get our hopes too high when as a matter of fact the dems by any measure by their majorites are supposed to pass a bill anyway. Thats a given. But look at how they are struggling even with a big majority. Now imagine the senate where they dont even have the majority and 10 senators may vote against it. It only takes one senator to vote against the bill to kill it. So lets calm down.

Its just that i have seen time and time again one house passes a bill and the other house either kills it or waters it down to insignificance. I am just saying lets wait and see what happens in the senate. yeah its great that the dems can get a bill passed but its a given they can pass any bill they want by virtue of their super majority. Now i would be excited if the dems and repubs were 50/50 in the house and we win by having republicans come out and vote with dems. Then i would say there is a chance the bill passes the senate. But when u have a bill with all rethugs voting against it and 26-30 dems voting againsts it and chances for the bill passing the senate as is will be impossible. Any bill that passes the senate will be very watered down with concessions made to insurance companies.

This vote should be viewed similar to the senate finance committee bill. It is a vote to move the process forward. The bill is not perfect, it is also not final. The President sent a clear message to democrats today: people are expecting the change they voted for! I expect the bills to get stronger from here, not weaker.

Those are the saddest FOUR words I've read here in a while. Calm down for what? Did you calm down when the president was running for president? Did you calm down when he and Hillary were battling it out for the nomination? Did you calm down when The Quitta from Wasilla was spewing her hate and ginning up the angry right? Did you calm down when McCain't called our president "That One?"

There is no calming down in this fight. I'm sure the Senate is watching this carefully. The historic nature of this day. They want to be part of this, I'm sure. It will be hard, but we'll get this done.

No..I did not say we lost the olympics coz of "I" and "me" references..I just thought that was not the appropriate moment to refer to the games as "I" and "me" my father, my election..but make it more of what it would mean for chicago and the country as opposed to what it means for me and my father and my election etc. Just my opinion. They were not in America but on a global stage and the speech should have been more reflective of the entire country(USA) and what the country has to offer as opposed to "I" "me" "my father" and my election.

Look. I am for HCR. What i am saying is that dems are expected to pass any bill by virtue of their majorities. But the fact is even with huge majorities they are struggling to get 218 and thats a concern.

I never ever believed that dems in congress will be unable to pass HCR especially with their majorities. Its like whenever the dream team plays basketball and they win its really no excitement coz they are expected to win. Same here with dems by virtue of their majorities they are expected to pass a bill. I will get excited when the senate passes a bill that is not watered down and no concessions to insurance companies. Now thats when i will say..yes we can. Its not just passing a bill for historical purposes but passing a good bill that majority will benefit from.

I disagree with you, only because Democrats have tried, they've had the numbers before - and still failed.

You are right, it's too close for comfort. But that's how epic battles in life are won. It's never a slam dunk.

I agree that the Senate is going to be problematic and the conservadems in the Senate are going to be annoying. Good news is that we have some very good liberal Democrats in the Senate, who are fighting the good fight.

I understand what you are saying and agree with much of it. The fact that any bill has gotten this far, endorsed by Consumer Unions (i.e. Consumer Reports), AMA, AARP, Catholic Bishops, Civil Rights Groups [and everyone else except insurance companies] makes this not just any bill, but an historic bill. No one is 100% satisfied, but this is a lot better than what we have today. I am convinced the bill will get better from here. The President wants to deliver the change he promised. That was his message on the hill today.

This is the type of level headed coolness that i expect from this thread as opposed to rabid fire every time u come on here to post a different opinion than the rest of the crowd. Challenging me with facts as opposed to attacks is very much appreciated. The fact that i am not all excited at this moment does not mean i dont want HCR reform. I just want us to keep the eye on the price. This is just the first step.

Obama has always said that we need to challenge him. And when i feel he is wrong or his views do not correspond with mine i will voice my opinion and not sugar coat it coz i love him or support him. His the president of the USA and not a family member and we need to challenge him when we disagree. But if we all want to sing kumba ya all the time without any criticism then we are not doing any one a favor. even a family member needs to here the truth on how u feel. We are not always going to agree on everything. Criticism on here is often taken to mean u dont like the president or we are all supposed to sing the same song.I love the prez and wish him well but i will call him out when i disagree with him. like he challenged us to do.

He basically discussed the moment in history we're in. How this bill isn't perfect, but it's damned good. He talked about the fact that the moment is now for Congress to do what they're sent to Congress to do.

Then he called on them to support the bill.

It was short, and oh so sweet.

I just love my Prez!

BTW - I saw it on MSNBC on tv. I've been flipping between MSNBC and CSPAN with the cnn.com video tab up on my computer. I caught it on MSNBC.

The uncle of one of the servicemembers from Utah killed at Ft. Hood is conducting a press conference on CNN. He said his nephew's family wanted everyone to know that his nephew loved serving under this President. He felt that we are all Americans - not Democrat or Republican, not black or white, just Americans - and he was proud to serve under President Obama.

Yes, Baby O' - I'm getting chills just thinking about it again. Usually when the family speaks, they will talk first about their fallen loved one - whom of course they loved dearly. The fact that this family started out with this was unexpected and kind of like a gift for our entire country, as though they haven't given enough already.

See single-payer advocates? Republicans are saying this is going toward single payer. So that's a good thing for y'all, no?

And according to Marsha Blackburn, women in Europe "seek to get cancer." I happen to know a French woman in her late 20s who has just found out she has cervical cancer. She's in school (which the country pays for) and doesn't have much money. But as we type, they caught it early, she's getting treatment, and expected to be ok. I haven't heard her complain about costs or waiting times. That's in socialist France.

This is what I had to explain to someone on the Kos. America has always been about incremental change.

I admonished them to think about the fight for equality for African Americans. First it was to abolish slavery. But we still were not seen in the eyes of the law as equal. Then came Brown v. Board where the country finally made Jim Crow laws illegal. But we still were not there. Then came the civil rights act. Then came the voting rights act. And we still have a ways to go for true equality.

I think when you are a minority in America, you "get" what change means in this country. It's never easy, nor quick. No one is saying we give up after this bill.

I believe the exchange is a great new system to build off of.

They know that when it is treated a first signs, it is over and gone and done. Our women don't seek an appointment due to cost, don't know they have it and wind up costing the system big time, if they are lucky, or wind up bankrupting their families if they can't get assistance.

We need eaily obtained preventive care.

Hey Brad, you best zip it on matters of speaking, writing, reading, critical thinking, etc. Your lack of skills (writing, spelling, critical thinking) and substance and content (you often cite inaccurate definitions of terms and concepts) are appalling. (Especially for someone who claims to be a 'teacher.) Your making negative comments about PBO's abilities in a negative way makes you even more of a fool than you've already succeeded in doing with your constant yammering. I used to laugh at you but now your entertainment value is zero.

At the beginning of every Congress, Dingell introduces a bill providing for a national health insurance system, the same bill that his father proposed while he was in Congress.
His father, John David Dingell, Sr., represented Michigan's 15th congressional district from 1933 to 1955.

The final version of the House health care reform bill would bear the Dingell name as a tribute to him and his father, Congressman John Dingell, Sr., who also fought for universal health care during his 23 years as a Member of Congress. He has also introduced H.R. 15, the National Health Insurance Act, which would provide universal health care for all Americans, during each of his terms in Congress going back to 1957.

I know there are more important things going on today, but I have some people at work yelling at me about this, since they know I was a big B.O. supporter...

This e-mail is circulating around to just about everyone I know. And I think it might just be more BS spam. But I was wondering if anyone here knows if this is true.

Here is the content of the e-mail:

I had a former employee call me earlier today inquiring about a job, and at the end of the conversation he gave me his phone number. I asked the former employee if this was a new cell phone number and he told me yes this was his "Obama phone." I asked him what an "Obama phone" was and he went on to say that welfare recipients are now eligible to receive (1) a FREE new phone and (2) approx 70 minutes of FREE minutes every month. I was a little skeptical so I Googled it and low and behold he was telling the truth. TAXPAYER MONEY IS BEING REDISTRIBUTED TO WELFARE RECIPIENTS FOR FREE CELL PHONES. This program was started earlier this year. Enough is enough, the ship is sinking and it's sinking fast. The very foundations that this country was built on are being shaken. The age old concepts of God, family, and hard work have flown out the window and are being replaced with "Hope and Change" and "Change we can believe in." I did check out "Safe Link Wireless", and it appears to be a real government program.

ZILLIONS have gone to Fat Cat bankers, who immediately jacked up Credit card interest.
Not many peeps from that government dole out (& Guaranteed backups), which could have paid for cell phones into eternity!

Ok got this. Now I have some ammo. Already e-mailed everyone on the list to let them know that it has nothing to do with the stimulus. And in fact, if you ask me, this company sounds like they are pulling a scam and should be shut down.

About the FCC Lifeline Program
Over twenty years ago, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) created the Lifeline Program to help guarantee Universal Service in the US. The Lifeline Program provides discounted telephone service to low-income families and individuals that otherwise would find it difficult to pay for telephone service. To qualify for Lifeline Support, Families or individuals have to be either enrolled in a State social service program or qualify under the U.S. Federal Poverty Guidelines . Eligibility varies by state.

In April 2008, the FCC approved TracFone as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier (ETC) to provide Lifeline Service in 11 states. If one reads in more detail you will find that the FCC established the Lifeline program over 20 years ago for low income families and individuals. Recall that 20 years ago landlines were the dominant means for telephone service. It appears that the FCC has now expanded this program to cell phone service. Participants in the program are subject to annual income verification; an example I found was income of less than $15K per year for an individual to qualify. The program provides free and discounted services. However, the site also says that the phone itself is not paid for by Federal subsidy but paid for by TracFone.

So it is not an "Obama phone." This program has been in place long before Obama. It is funded by fees assessed to those with landlines and cell phones. I check my phone bills and I pay 16 cents per month on my ATT landline for Universal Lifeline Telephone Service Charge and 40 cents per month for my Verizon Lifeline Surcharge.

Hope this information helps to set the record straight.

Aren't these cell phones for DISABLED people on disability?

Even if all welfare recipients receive them the cost doesn't come close to the amount of taxes we all pay for the insurance of every federal employee, especially congresspersons, reps AND senators!

You might want to double check your facts. I am disabled and did not qualify because of income and resources. Don't believe everything you read or try to mislead people here by repeating things out of context!

My Blue dog congressman, Allen Boyd 202-225-5235 has never been for HCR.-stressing his concern of the deficit. He did, however, vote YES for the Bush prescription drug plan that was not paid for. Where was his concern then? Yesterday, i had a shredd of hope-as the answer from his staff was he is undecided. Today, however, business as usual for the dog! He will vote NO because he doesn't think the bill does enough to bring down cost!!!I asked what exactly he thought would solve the problem. She said "He will work with congress for a more fiscially responsible bill!!!" I will uphold my pledge to not work for his re election, and not to vote for him.I will NOT vote for a Republican ! I have occasionally in the past, but the way they have acted toward our President-- NEVER AGAIN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! I also don't want to be an enabler by not voting at all and therefore possibly unwillingly helped a GOP get elected--so I will push for a primary. i sure hope we have someone who will oppose him. This Boyd dog needs to be muzzled !!!I contacted DCCC. Anyone know of anything I can do to make sure there is a primary in this district? Unfortunately, he just got re elected to the dog house, so it's going to be awhile.

i just called his office using your talking points! god, i was so angry. told the staffer this pretend concern for the deficit was dishonest considering his past history. 45,ooo people die a year because of a broken system. we don't have time to play games like this.

i'm going to write to moveon, hcan & progressive change campaign committee* and urge them to coordinate to craft a national campaign that challenges blue doggers who opposed HCR and support their opponents.

whatever happens to HCR, their blatant disregard for healthcare and opposition to reform CANNOT STAND.
