A bad week for Democrats compounded by an awful moment for Barack Obama.
President Obama didn't wait long after Tuesday's devastating elections to give critics another reason to question his leadership, but this time the subject matter was more grim than a pair of governorships.
After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.
But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a "shout-out" to "Dr. Joe Medicine Crow -- that Congressional Medal of Honor winner." Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?
Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That's the least that should occur.

Our hearts need to be with our troops and no one should politicize this as blaming Obama or blaming those who oppose Obama. No one should blame gun owners. There is one person responsible for this. Hopefully he will be tried, convicted, and executed for his crimes.
This animal was a terrorist and is a reminder of those that we are fighting.

Let's also not equate the despicable actions of one Muslim American, whose family has disavowed what he did, with Al-Qaeda or the Taliban - or peaceful Muslims in this country and around the world.
Also, we shouldn't solely blame the Army for not agreeing to discharge him, since we will never know if he would have gone on to murder innocent people as a civilian anyway. He is a deeply disturbed person and, unfortunately, not the last who will surface to make his point with a weapon.

You are saying the Army is partially responsible because it did not discharge him from his promise. The US Army gave this man his education in medical school and all of his training. He signed up for his service and he should have fulfilled it. This man is responsible for his actions and he alone. Also, if it is true what was reported that he was yelling Allah and the reports of his fanatical writings are true then this man is a muslim terrorist. I know that is a dirty word but there are muslim terrorists and this man was a terrorist.
If he recovers he should be charged with murder and treason and then executed by a firing squad.

Brad,
You write disputing "Army is partially responsible because it did not discharge him.. "
Army certainly IS responsible for promoting him to Major, and scheduling his Iraq assignment!
Military makes 'mistakes in judgment' too!!!
Everything isn't so black-n-white as you think!
"...parents of slain Army Ranger and NFL star Pat Tillman voiced concerns Tuesday that general who played a role in mis-characterizing his death could be put in charge of military operations in Afghanistan.
In a brief interview with Associated Press, Pat Tillman Sr. accused Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal of covering up the circumstances of the 2004 slaying.
"I do believe that guy participated in a falsified homicide investigation," Pat Tillman Sr. said.
.....later Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal apologized for his role in the cover up:
General taking over Afghan war said Tuesday he was sorry for the cover-up of ex-NFL star Pat Tillman's friendly-fire-death.
"I was a part of that, and I apologize for it," Army Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal told a Senate hearing.
Tillman was killed by fellow GIs in 2004 as his Ranger unit operated in eastern Afghanistan on the Pakistan border.
McChrystal signed off on a posthumous Silver Star medal for Tillman - who gave up a fortune as a pro football player to join the Army after 9/11 - - EVEN THOUGH he KNEW it might be fratricide and not a firefight."

A Muslim terrorist or an insane individual? Either way what he did was evil and wrong. Are those from Blackwater who go on their murdering rampages insane, greedy or American/Christian terrorists?
It's time we stop equating religion and blaming all members of those religions for the acts of an individual or a minute percentage of those individuals. That is how bush and the satanic neocons were able to get Americans to buy off on unnecessary, immoral and illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Strauss - the neocon Godfather.
"Because mankind is intrinsically wicked, he has to be governed," he once wrote. "Such governance can only be established, however, when men are united - and they can only be united against other people."
"Order can be stable only if it is united by an external threat, if no external threat exists then one has to be manufactured"

Let's not forget the American fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, sisters and brothers who are sent to fight, kill, be maimed and die in unnecessary and immoral wars and their families who suffer because if this action by the government. Nor should we forget those innocent people in the countries who are the victims of our government's warmongering, greed and desire to impose their desires upon these people.

No they won't the American people do not want this healthcare reform. It will increase premiums for private isurance holders, it raises taxes on most medical devices, raises income taxes, and is the begining of a single payer system which most do not want.
Please Congressman and Congress Women listen to the real AMerican majority. Look at New Jersey and Virginia, they do not want this Presidents policies enacted. Look at what happen to those who were for the Presidents healthcare plan, cap and tax, etc. They are now looking for new jobs.

Brad, you say, "American people do not want this health care reform "
You don't speak for all American people.
Voters in New Jersey and Virginia elected governors. "all politics is local"
However, voters in NY 23 and CA voted for Representatives to Congress;
Those Americans elected TWO MORE Democrats who WILL vote FOR our health care REFORM bill, as was promised voters who voted THEM into office!!!

Well neither do all of you speak for all Americans. I do hate to say it but most of you are in the minority. Most people believe in liberty, individual responsibility, and limited government. You all believe that Government will take care of your problems and finance it from others who have been successful and responsible.

"Most people believe in liberty,"
WE ALL DO!!!
"individual responsibility,"
WE BELIEVE THAT TOO!!!
"and limited government".
CERTAINLY DO TOO!
A Government Limited to REPRESENTING American people, NOT just CORPORATE INTERESTS!!!
This PART IS A FLAT OUT LIE:
"You all believe that Government will take care of your problems and finance it from others who have been successful and responsible."
So many of us have written back to you of our work ethic, our life time dedication to hard struggles, educational achievements, etc., but you come back OVER & OVER with SAME OLD litany!!!
Even Ron Paul (on Larry King Live) agreed with Michael Moore about Capitalism , but R.Paul called current system "Corporatism".
How do you defend "Corporatism", which lobbies our Congressional Reps with billions of dollars in paid lobbyists and campaign fund donations?
There are Dems as well as Repubs in on largesse.
Why don't YOU help us weed out corruption?
Unless you are a paid blogger, you would want to help us.

Why don't YOU help us weed out corruption?
The only way that can be done it to toss all but a few out of Congress and many in the Obama administration (Geithner, Summers etc.) out and keep them from running for office again.
If you're not willing to do that then there is no way to weed out corruption. Corruption knows no party lines/limits.

Heaven knows, there are enough to go around from all 50 states!
I do hope that President Obama takes Larry Summers out; was right in there when banking deregulation happened.
Geithner was a lot younger then, & he wasn't in charge at the time either;
Think he's learned a lot since.
I'd like Elizabeth Warren to be in charge!

Quietly lurking... Waiting for the hours to pass. But it is after midnight here on the other side of the Pacific & I can't stay up all night!
I'll go to bed soon, but if i wake up in a few hours time, I'll be checking in to see what has happened.
I still can not believe that America does not have the health benefits that we in Australia have. I still can not believe the cost of medical services & medications in America compared to what it costs here in Australia. The full cost of X-rays & CAT scans here are about 1/r of what you pay, then we get about half that rebated through our national medicare.
SOMEONE / SOME ENTITIES are ripping off the system at the cost of human lives.
How the opponents can not see this is totally beyond me to understand.

Thank you for your moral support.
You say;
"How opponents can not see this is totally beyond me to understand."
That's what we OFA bloggers think too!
Especially when we see those obviously older people standing alongside Rep. Michelle Bachman screaming against "government run health care", when so obviously they are seniors using government run Medicare!
One of them had a heart attack yesterday, & was assisted by "government run health care" workers from clinic located in Congress's building!
Even all of Congressional Republicans & so-called blue dog Dems have subsidized premiums through "government run health care"!!!

Your sister made the choice to be self employed. When you make decisions you have to live with them. It is not my responsibility to pay for your sister. There should be changes to eliminate preexisting conditions. That is wrong and should be changed. The government should provide direct payments wo help with those with preexisting condititions. However, if you choose to work for yourself and cannot afford coverage on your own then it is your choice and not my responsibility.

And for everyone who thinks the NJ and VA governors elections were about President Obama, just doesn't understand that Corzine (who I voted for) and Deeds really did not engender the democatic and independent voters to get out and vote; plain and simple. One only has to look at the voter turnout in NJ, VA and NYC (record lows).
The real race was for the congressional seat in NY 23 that went to a Democratic in a strong Republican county.

How did it ever come to this point in America?
That so many citizens could be paying astronomical monthly Health Ins. premiums to Mega Insurance companies;
- who pay Mega Millions to CEO's salaries,
- who also pay princely dividends to stockholders,
- who pay (out of Premiums funded by ordinary folks) approx. 1.5 Million per day to lobby Congress against Health Care Reform for very people these Congressional representatives were elected to serve!

Just Called Rep John Boccieri of the 16th district in Ohio. I am from the first district. The Lady answered was nice and I discuss with her about the Hyde Amendment. She told me I was preaching to the quire and that see agreed with me and he was not voting know he just wanted to correct the language or make it clear in the bill. Plus she told me a lot of people was calling against it and I told her it is most likely an Astroturf group or some misguided individuals. She took my name and info to added to the for list and took my comments. Further more; I told her that I support Senator Brown who has been excellent for fighting for our health care.

I had to pay for an emergency room surgery in Germany just before Thanksgiving last year. Two hour procedure, O.R. doctor-S and assistants, anesthesiologist, blood tests, x-rays and all the trimmings, including 2 follow ups and suture removal ... 1063 Euros total cost ($1594 at today's TERRIBLE exchange rate)
Split my lip in Florida, 4 stitches in the emergency room, 20 minutes tops, 1 person working on me (definitely not a surgeon) ... NOTHING else ... $1200.
Something is seeeerioulsy wrong with that picture.

Isack, so you should not have to pay for your healthcare. Those who mae over 6 figures should pay for people like you.
You want everyone else to pay for you. Isack why dont you go to school, get a diploma, then a degree and become a productive member of society instead of feeding off those who are self reliant.
Do you understand the concept of self reliance.

You rely on society just the same, Brad. Unless you poop golden eggs, you need society to buy and/or sell whatever you're involved in. Or are you so divinely chosen that a calamity can not befall you. What if your product fails? What if the owner of the company you work for dies? When you are removed from the loop through no fault of their own it is not a matter of self reliance, it's just bad luck. It is a moral obligation to help those souls if it is within your power to do so, but I guess that is not a value that you are familiar with Mr. self reliant.
You would be the one begging for help from others that have that morality gene if a society changing event happened in America and your little world stopped turning the way you are used to.
So puh'leeze don't talk about self reliance ... Speak of luck.
Don't tread on my thread with that drivel.

Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-MN) chief of staff Michelle Marston, a long-time veteran of Capitol Hill who has guided Bachmann in her much-increased national TV presence this year, has quit her post.
In an e-mail exchange with POLITICO, Marston declined to say why she's going.
"I'm just not talking about it, and frankly I don't think there's a story here," Marston wrote.
A conservative Republican House member, speaking on the condition of anonymity, suggested that Bachman's views - and her willingness to state them - make it hard for her to keep staff.
"When your captain's crazy, it's time to find a new ship," the lawmaker said.

Yes if they can just bother to explain how does expanding coverage and bringing down cost of health care actually kill jobs that might be good.
But anyone with common sense knows that if small business brings down the cost of health care to their employees that are actually likely to expand jobs.
Its clear from these remarks that the new teabegger rethuglicans live in their own fantasy world.

BTW, I loved the statements from the democratic women. It was in stark contrast to the crazy stuff on the other side. I also loved how everyone sat quietly and allowed the other side to complete their requests for unanimous consent without any objections. That is how you role when you are WINNING! It was very sad to see the level of disrepect coming from republicans.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops delivered a critical endorsement to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Saturday by signing off on late-night agreement to grant a vote on an amendment barring insurance companies that participate in the exchange from covering abortions.
"Passing this amendment allows the House to meet our criteria of preserving the existing protections against abortion funding in the new legislation," the Bishops wrote in a letter to individual members. "Most importantly, it will ensure that no government funds will be used for abortion or health plans which include abortion."

If I understand what Stupak was pushing, no plan in the exchange, even private plans bought with private funds, cannot cover abortion since government subsidies may also be used for private plans.
That's too far. A shame.

I am pro-choice and I can live with this compromise. The law that prohibits the federal government from funding abortions will remain, but nothing in the bill changes a woman's right to choose one. We are basically keeping the status quo on this issue, which is the best course of action.

don't you though? their fantasy based arguments only sway the teabeggers. The left and independents already know this is a great bill.
That's why no matter how much noise they made in August the majority (sane America) still supported the public option. But they don't pay attention.
They have no plan of their own, no ideas, so all they have left is lies.

I'm stationed at Ft Hood and PBO did not have anything to do with the shooting that occurred. In fact, no one predicted a soldier would commit this type of crime on fellow soldiers.
Let's continue to support PBO and stop listening to the media.
And let me say the media is having another Jessica Lynch moment of truth. Ms Munley is NO hero. It was SGT Todd that grounded Nidal. Why is the media overlooking his actions. Nidal grounded Munley and she was in no condition to shoot Nidal.

Hey Pro Life;
I am pro-life myself. The House bill do not have anything about abortion in it. You need to read the Hyde Amendment that prohibits government paying abortions on tax payers. The republican party is full of crap and they know that the abortion is not in the house bill nor it will be in the senate bill either. The republicans are only using it as a wedge issue. republican party don't care about life. They care about money and power.

I am pro-choice, and I am also against abortions. God gave us the right to choose, but he also said we should choose life over death. No one is being asked to override their conscience. There will be debate and a vote on the abortion amendment. That would not be happening if pro-life democrats were being strong-armed. The agreed upon goal is to keep the laws regarding abortion exactly the same... not to tilt it one way or the other.

Please call your representative (staffers are in the office today) and urge them to vote against the Stupak Amendment.
If the Stupak Amendment is not defeated, all insurance companies who participate in the exchange will not be able to provide a full array of reproductive services to women. The Hyde Amendment already restricts federal dollars from being spent on elective abortion, we do not need additional legislation.
The United States Coalition of Catholic Bishops have manipulated a group of legislators into producing this amendment. Where is the separation of church and state?
Please urge a NO vote on the Stupak Amendment.
Thanks.
