After the election, President-elect Barack Obama challenged us to perform a community service project before his inauguration. Be the Change Baederwood, a group of over 150 area members which formed after the election, accepted the challenge and announces the O-Positive Program.

Earlier this week, American News Project (http://americannewsproject.com/) reported that, come November, Pennsylvania voters could face substantial delays at the polls. We spoke with the man running the election in Philadelphia, who scoffed at long lines and tales of lost votes. Now, voters are suing the state of Pennsylvania. With the help of Voter Action and the NAACP, they filed a complaint this morning in Philadelphia federal court, specifically citing an interview between the American News Project and Philadelphia Deputy City Commissioner Fred Voigt. Oct 23 2008 | PLAINTIFFS CLAIM VOTING MACHINE BREAKDOWNS AND LONG LINES WILL DISENFRANCHISE VOTERS 'A PERFECT STORM' IMPACTING THE RIGHT TO VOTE PHILADELPHIA, PA – A coalition of Pennsylvania voters and civil rights groups, led by the NAACP State Conference of Pennsylvania, filed a lawsuit today in federal court in Philadelphia seeking to ensure that voters receive emergency paper ballots on Election Day when 50% or more voting machines become inoperable at any polling site in the state. The lawsuit, filed against Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro A. Cortés, alleges that voters will be disenfranchised when they face the burden of having to wait hours in line, due to voting machine breakdowns, in order to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

"Pennsylvania's Secretary of the Commonwealth has issued a directive to all Pennsylvania counties requiring that emergency paper ballots be distributed only when 100% of voting machines malfunction on Election Day," says Jonathan Abady, a partner at the New York-based law firm Emery Celli Brinckerhoff & Abady, and co-counsel for the plaintiffs. "If left unchanged, this standard will place an undue burden on voters across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania."

In his declaration filed with the lawsuit, J. Whyatt Mondesire, the president of the NAACP State Conference of Pennsylvania, states: "One of the major impediments to members exercising their right to vote is the long lines frequently encountered on election day…Thousands of members have faced serious delays in voting when machines have broken down in the past and this problem will be much more severe this year when unprecedented numbers of voters will be coming to the polls."

In addition to the NAACP State Conference of Pennsylvania, the plaintiffs include individual voters who reported long lines and voting machine breakdowns during the state's primary election in April, as well as the Election Reform Network, a local election integrity organization. The plaintiffs are represented by Voter Action, a national voting rights organization, the law firm of Emery Cell Brinckerhoff & Abady, and the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia.

Internet Connections and the American Revolution

The internet groups that are active during this campaign are like the Committees of Correspondence in the American Revolution. The purpose of the committees was to exchange information, spread propaganda, and coordinate efforts of the various colonies In 1772, Samuel Adams of Boston created the first Committee of Correspondence, which was primarily an exchange of ideas in letters and pamphlets among members. Within a few years, this one committee led to dozens of similar discussion groups in towns throughout the colonies. Eventually, these isolated groups came together to facilitate the exchange of ideas and solidify opposition to the Crown. The Committees of Correspondence proved invaluable in uniting colonists, distributing information, and organizing colonial voices of opposition.

Now after we win this thing, I am curious to see how these electronic communication facilities set up to engage voters will help us to achieve these lofty goals we've articulated to all modern Americans citizens? Will we get text messages when an important bill comes to the floor of the Senate? Will still see community events and opportunities to volunteer offered to all? Will we get videos from Obama urging us to do this or that?

To step up by communicating and working in concert with each other for common causes is imperative in any revolution. To truly band together as brothers and sisters always offered escape from top down divisive models to more cooperative and equal social forms. Look what they did on horseback and sailboat! We can build, restore, renovate, recreate together like Amish on a barn!

It's still the election and We have our challenges

I'm in Blue Eastern Pennsylvania! About Red Western Pennsylvania Congressman John Murtha addressed the issue of race rather bluntly said that there are still folks who have a problem voting for someone because they are black older people who don't want too much change too fast. How did McCain respond?

McCain was McCampaigning in Moon, PA he said "Senator Obama supporters are saying some pretty nasty things about Western Pensylvania and you know, I couldn't agree with them more. I couldn't disagree with you".... and then repeats the words God and patriotic and great until they clap. Even Cindy looked dismayed. I'm not kidding. Check it out, here.

I've been Quite Long Enough

I cannot believe I could not find the words to share my thoughts on Joe Biden as our VP. Honestly, I was very disappointed and I had to really dig down deep to figure out what I was more disappointed about. I remember that night around 12ish I saw on the internet that it was leaked, somewhere between 2-3 am if I remember correctly I got my txt from the campaign making it official. BLAH! REALLY??? Is that the best we could have as a choice? THE VERY BEST? Was Gen Wesley Clark too busy or did Hilary go out of town? L The choice was pretty darn obvious to me; he should have picked Hilary Clinton. She deserved more than anyone else did. That would have seriously united the party like no other and secured the votes for a sure fire win. I know some of you might be shocked by saying this, but seriously, if Obama did not receive the nomination I would be working just as hard for her to win as president. With no reservation, I would be right in the front lines as I am for Barack. I spoke on my first experience of meeting him and was taken back from his attitude. I can only do my best to trust in his decision in his pick for VP. Sometimes things aren’t always what they seem and I hope that Joe Biden steps up to the plate, because he has some HUGE shoes to fill; since its going to take a lot for me to be convinced that he is a better choice than Hilary.

It's all over netroots that "Jim Adkisson, the man who shot two people to death in a Tennessee Unitarian church this week because he was angry at “liberals and gays,” had an array of right-wing books at his home. Inside his house, “officers found ‘Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder’ by radio talk show host Michael Savage, ‘Let Freedom Ring’ by talk show host Sean Hannity, and ‘The O’Reilly Factor,’ by television talk show host Bill O’Reilly."
As the mother of a decorated Marine Sergeant decorated Iraq veteran, I am disgusted at you all. This this guy was actually going to go hungry because his food stamps were running out. The liberals he murdered would probably have helped him, but you made him hate them enough to kill them.
You must feel horrible to see what your vitriol has done. IT"S SUCH A SHAME! The old men and women of the Tennessee Valley Universalist Church who were watching "Annie" were brutally murdered in front of children because of your sleight of hand programming that made this veteran think that his problems were caused by the liberals instead of the corporate pigs that feed you and suck up all the welfare and get tax breaks.
RESIGNED AND REPENTANT should be the name of your next book because you need to stop what you are doing now. Before anyone else gets hurt.

The Kool Aid Thing

Hello George, I'm not are clear on this 'kool-aid' reference. They say it on FOX News in it's daily vitriol to describe Obama supporters. I understand the Jonestown Massacre's kool aid had poison in it and people knew if they drank it they would die. I believe the truth is the clear living water and I think Obama is telling it and yes, I am drinking it in. To help you understand here is one of stories I was raised on as a Christian. So he (Jesus) came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was abut the sixth hour. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?” Jesus answered “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Who's in Whoville?

Greetings from Philadelphia to all my brothers and sisters in the fight to get this country sane and happy again. The price of liberty is vigilance. The appointment of Carol Wheeler for Irish Outreach Contact? Sorry, but I liked Samantha Powers much better. This smacks of a political meat-bone thrown to a wealthy influential Washingtonian Friend of Bill and Hill.

The very first platform of this campaign was the vow that this country will not be beholden to the wealthy donor or corporate business interests, but to us, the little donor/activist/citizen. Our access to the contact information of all these appointees is crucial and we need to hold them accountable.

If she is smart and really is onboard with the Obama vision of transparency, no outreach with expensive celebrity parties or getting a Dublin flat until we are reached and consulted. I don't want to see her take some fathead elected official out to dinner until she has something that we Americans of Irish Decent want her to say. Instead of guessing or polling us to death, we could communicate to our representatives in ways that work toward solutions. Outlay our concerns and confess our love be able to find the right person to work with in the government to make it all better.

It's like we're the Who's in Whoville down here! Listen to us, we want and need to know that we are heard and welcomed into finding solutions. Americans are clever and goodhearted, we can make it all better.

Can anyone answer the strange charges from Nader on Obama and the inner city.? He will be on This Week with George Stephanopoulos this Sunday. Most likely he got on because he made this helpful remark..

"And it's clear from Sen. Obama's campaign that he is not willing to tackle the white power structure -- whether in the form of the corporate power structure or many of the super-rich -- who are taking advantage of 100 million low-income Americans who are suffering in poverty or near poverty."

Nader is unapologetic. From his website

He rises out of the ashes every four years and charges both candidates of corporate corruption. What does he do in the meantime. Write dictionaries?

We should let him know we also know about the power plays in Washington and that Barack is the man who we trust to change it. Look at www.USAspending.gov. It is more than Nader ever did for transparency in government spending. Everyone should know that Obama how wrestled with the corporate powers that be in his own career and how he's come to work against it. From his first professional decision to forgo a corporate law job and be a community organizer, why he entered politics in the first place. I think his epiphany on riding corporate jets that he wrote about so eloquently in the Audacity of Hope might be helpful for Ralph to read again before he gets drunk on facetime.

I would have hoped that Nader would see this campaign as a continuation of his work. Nader used to be a hero for me. I watched him kick corporate butt on Merv Griffin. Now he sounds so canned and out of it.

I hope Obama will sit down and talk to him soon. Nader obviously doesn't care how much he messed up the world the last time he ran for president.

We will blanket the state to help our local field offices kick off their Get Out The Vote activities throughout Saturday and Sunday. In addition to our pre canvass rally on Saturday morning, women throughout Pennsylvania will host house parties over the weekend with undecided voters and key local and national surrogates to talk about why Barack Obama is the best person to lead our country moving forward and bring the change we all want! After a long day of canvassing, join other women to mix, mingle and network at a fundraiser low dollar Saturday night at the Philadelphia Doubletree Hotel, 237 S. Broad Street, from 5-7 pm. Tix are $25 for students and those with limited incomes and $50 for all others. We’ll have a live band, food and a great mix of surrogates!
