What can we do?

I have never been more excited about any one candidate in my life. In fact, I have never been as optimistic about the future of America as I am now. Obama is outstanding, he is right on with his policies, and I feel he will do great things for the US. I am excited to get my feet wet and my hands dirty.

a new beginning; the end of continuance

"It is a time of change. It is a time to look ahead to the future, to look to the next generations. To think about the children of today, knowing they are the leaders of tomorrow."

I have heard this idea and plea to the nation many times from different politicians from the lowest city council to the executive power of the United States. The idea to keep our mind on the generations beneath us; to build up the children to become the next great leaders of America. I grew up hearing this from being a young child. However, I find that the people who say these statements agree with it, but only if the next generation doesn't come in and take the positions and offices of those who are from the previous generation. Well, this time, the next generation is ready to take over. There is a new generation of a politician ready and willing to take up his calling; to take up the role he has been encouraged to pursue. The time is now and the leader of tomorrow is here.

Talkin' 'Bout My Generation

I've been thinking a bit lately about generations. When I typically think of generations, it is a span of 25-30 years with typical descriptions like "my parent's generation" and "my generation". Events as of late have not only made my definition more specific, but cause me some alarm.

Simply put - and without scientific evidence - I feel like there is a generation out there today that is by my estimation achieving a first. But it is a smaller generation, one that is between my generation (25-40) and my parents' (60-75). Not trying to place blame solely on this group, or on everyone in this group, but I feel like their track record thus far might make them the first generation to leave the country worse off than it was when they "came to power". Worse off, for their kids. Worse off, for their grandchildren.

I look at so many factors in play these days - Iraq (and now Iran), the national deficit, global warming - these are all things that - though not necessarily all caused solely by this generation, but all things that were not made better. And my fear is that some of this may be irreparable. We need change - and we need it now - for the three issues I mentioned above and a host of others. We need to not have a nation divided, polarized by our view points. But rather, we need to accept each other's differences and move on. On to making the best decisions we can for our country, for our world, for our children. In those decisions, we must not only accept each other's beliefs, but embrace them and where we can, incorporate them in to a compromise. A compromise meaning a solution acceptable to both sides. Not one side feeling defeat and shut out.

That is why I support Senator Barack Obama. He has proven in his thoughts, words and actions to have America's best interests at heart. The raps against him - liberal, inexperienced, divisive - are things I have never seen or heard from him. I listen to his podcasts, watch his speeches and read his writing. He is on the liberal side, but he is not a bleeding heart. He has just a few years in the Senate, but through his other work, political and life experience - he has more credence than most of the other 99 in that institution. And claims that he is divisive leave me only with the thought that they say so because he is objective, he sees both sides, and he knows the poor, weak, underrepresented and those unjustly held back - due to race, gender, sexuality or any other issue - are the ones who need help. Why is that divisive? It seems to stem from the fact that others of us may have to give a little. Of our money. Of our time. Of our superiority. That hurts some people - but not me. Bringing those people up a step on the ladder of life - a step closer to equality - seems to be one of the main tenets of Senator Obama's outlook.

I believe Senator Obama is the right person to lead our country. Out of the quagmire of Iraq. Out of debt. Out of politicking, anger and hate. He will lead our shaping of a better America. Repair the wounds we have cut into our foreign relations. Help bridge the divisions in our own country. And eight years later, we will be back on the road that Clinton was building. A road that leads out of decades of conflict (Vietnam, Iraq), scandal (Watergate, Iran-Contra) and misery (gas crises, environmental harm).

Thanks for reading! Now help us leave this country and this world a better place for the next generation.

Obama to be in Cedar Rapids TODAY!

Senator Barack Obama is coming to Iowa for his announcement tour this weekend, and he is starting in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, February 10th at Kennedy High School at 4545 Wenig Rd at NE. Doors open at 3:00 pm and the event starts at 4 pm.

This event is free and open to the public, but that you will need a ticket to attend. We really hope you can you make it! We have numerous ticket locations:
