Riders started the day Thursday in Cedar Falls and traveled to Independence. The Bikers for Barack joined in for all 62 miles of the trip sporting "Ride for Change" t-shirts which prompted many cheers. Along the way, the Obama riders stopped at RAGBRAI favorites such as roadside food vendors Pastafari and Beekman's Ice Cream.
The riders also stopped along the way to chat with Black Hawk County farmers and took a photo with the farmers' most reliable and favorite tractor--a 1966 Farmall 806, which still had its original coat of the classic red International paint.
While the riders have returned home now, the energy and excitement about Barack continues to circulate around the state. You can check out this post that also talks about all the Barack supporters involved with RAGBRAI. After a great speech at DMACC on Tuesday about jobs and the economic impact of Iraq on Iowa families, Barack stopped by the Iowa campaign headquarters in the East Village in Des Moines.
While in theory the event was going to be a surprise, the irresistibly exciting rumor of Senator Obama’s visit spread quickly among the interns and volunteers. Nevertheless, when Barack walked into the office he definitely surprised a few us who had been busy on the phones and didn’t hear the flurry of excitement.
When Senator Obama strolled into field organizer alley, there were cheers of excitement at meeting him in person. A few first-time volunteers found themselves in a state of blissful disbelief at having chosen such a day to come lend a hand. After shaking hands, chatting, and smiling for photos, Senator Obama said hello to interns, volunteers and organizers all over the state on a surprise conference call!
The visit proved to be an unforgettable day for interns, volunteers and organizers already energized about the amazing things happening in Iowa. Although we have been incredibly energized ever since we took our first steps on this campaign, this kind of firsthand inspiration makes it easy to put in those extra hours!
