As I sit in my school's library I am listening to my ipod, texting, periodically checking facebook, and to top it all off trying to finish my take home mid term due on Friday. In today's world students are constantly on the go, there is always something to do, somewhere to be. We are always well connected to friends, family, and the latest news, gossip and celebrity drama. However something has changed, and in a major way. Never before have I seen so many students take an interest in politics. Instead of checking the social blogs more often then not I catch my friends on cnn.com and my favorite mybarackobama.com. At Loyola University there are over 200 members of Students for Barack Obama. Every week we host a meeting and often on weekends attend canvassing trips to Iowa. One of the main reasons so many students are taking an interest is because of the War in Iraq. Five years ago today Senator Obama stood up and denounced the War in Iraq as a bad idea and a misuse of troops. Today DePaul University had the privilege of hosting Senator Obama as he re-vamped and renewed his stance on Iraq and foreign policy. The Obama administration " will always tell the American people the truth. I will always tell you where I stand. It’s what I’m doing in this campaign. It’s what I’ll do as President. I’ll lead a new era of openness." (Senator Obama; Oct 2, 2007) It is time for a positive change and for the first time in a long time Senator Obama gives me hope. The hope that our troops will be brought home and that the United States can re-establish itself as a country that works with the rest of the world for common goals of peace, prosperity and happiness. It was a great honor to hear the Senator speak today; it gave me goose bumps to think that in a few short months he could be our new president. Every morning I wake up more energized then the day before because I know that I can be apart of making history. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have the ability to greatly impact the long-term future. I encourage everyone to take a second out of your busy day to turn off your iphone and just think... how can I help?
