Jonathan Cook's Blog
I am deeply encouraged by Barack Obama's campaign for President, but I have some concerns and doubts. I will use this blog to express both my encouragement and my doubts.
Is marriage a religious bond?

Senator Obama said in New Hampshire this week that he thinks that marriage is a religious bond. He made this statement in order to justify his opposition to same-sex marriage.
Well, I'm not religious. I never have been. My wife is, but she's not a Christian. So, I'd like Senator Obama to consider us. We're in a heterosexual marriage, but our marriage is absolutely not a religious bond.
I'm not gay, but I feel slighted by Senator Obama's comments. I can only imagine how gay and lesbian couples feel when they hear him condoning discrimination. The idea of setting up a supposedly separate but equal system of marriage is as outrageous as the idea of setting up supposedly separate but equal system of schools for children of different ethnic backgrounds.
I want to know this: If Senator Obama thinks that marriage is a religious bond, then does he not recognize the validity of my non-religious marriage?
Why should I think that Senator Obama will protect me against religious bigotry when he won't protect same-sex couples from it?
